Benson vertical steam engine.
« on: May 31, 2021, 03:07:37 PM »
Well the Benson is finished. I just have to make a wood base to mount it on. The governor didn't have enough weight to return to the rest position even though I made sure everything moved freely so I added a spring made from .008 wire and wound around a .062 mandrel. I had to keep stretching it until I got just the right pressure for it to work and return. I will post a video as soon as I get it. Everywhere there was bolts I replicated studs with nuts by leaving a small projection beyond the hex. The build log is under 'Engines from Drawings'.

Art, craftsmanship and engineering all in perfect harmony in that engine.

Did you make the dummy studs/nuts from scratch, or are they modified off the shelf bolts ?
I have a load to make for Agnes and have just set up the capstan attachment on my Pultra to make them.

Super engine by the way.

Hi Phil,
I made most of the nuts and bolts with taps and dies, even down to M1.0 x .25. Most full sized engines had studs and nuts but for this scale duplicating them while doable is just not my cup of tea. I turn and thread the shank of the bolt then put it in the dividing head to create the hex. It then goes back to the lathe and I cut a short projection the same diameter as the screw size and then cut it off. It looks like a stud poking out of the hex but in fact is just a representation.

I am doing almost the same apart from using hexagon bar stock to save milling all the flats, I am using a lot of M1.6 stud/bolts and have a thread roller for that size rather than cutting with a die.
On the Pultra capstan attachment it is a a fairly slick operation to make these, it just takes a while to set it all up.

Hi George, thanks for posting another exquisite build.

I have just spent the afternoon making some M2.5 nuts which gives me an even closer appreciation on your M1 examples.
