Duke of Edinburgh

In the UK we have just heard the sad news:

The Duke through out his life was a great enthusiast for science and innovation and had a keen interest in Model Engineering. A frequent visitor to the Model Engineering Exhibition in 1954 he graciously consented to the annual award of a Trophy to be known as " The Duke of Edinburgh Challenge Trophy" to be awarded to the winner of the Championship Award at the Model Engineering Show.

In addition to "The Duke of Edinburgh Challenge Trophy" awarded at the Model Engineer Exhibition, Prince Phillip also instigated the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme to reward young people, all over the world, for completing a series of self-improvement exercises. These included voluntary community work, physical fitness, developing practical and social skills and the dreaded expedition training. Many of us will remember those cold, wet nights bivouacking and treking across Dartmoor with some affection.
