Weir Steam Pump Complete
« on: March 07, 2021, 06:32:18 PM »
Completed the build of my Weir steam powered boiler feedpump, using the plans from Kennions in the UK. I doubled the size of all the parts from the plans. The main body parts are all brass, the rods are 303 stainless steel and the valve sliders are bronze. Nice deisgn for a pump, it has two simple valve chests rather than the single one with a maze of passages tangled together like on most designs.

Here are a couple videos of it running - it is sitting in a tray of water about 1/2" deep. It actually primed itself after a few strokes the first run, so the check valves must be sealing well. Here goes:

That's excellent, Chris!  You made short work of this project, that's for sure!   And it runs great and pumps water and everything.  What more could you want?

Well done!
Kim

Thanks very much everyone, much appreciated. Definitely a fun project.

Achim, still have some time here before spring weather warms up enough here to take the steam wagon out for a road trip. Looks like a thaw this week, but rain too. We usually get more snow through March at least. I'm getting drawings ready and metal ordered for the next big build, the Holly triple compound water pumping engine from the Ward pump station in Buffalo. These are huge engines, sixty feet tall, so the model will have to be 1:32 scale to get it small enough.

Thanks guys!  I was just in running it some more, and also grabbed the spare Marion engine off the shelf to run too (I had made three at the time, adding one more set of parts to the two needed didn't add much time given the setups were already being made). I'm taking the opportunity between projects to clean up/clean out the shops, been neglecting that recently and the shop elves are no help, they just throw those little beer cans on the pile.

find a rusty old screw top can and label it ortho-elfacide, add some warnings and other lines like "effective on gnomes and pixies also" maybe just a little bit of "gentle terror" will keep them in line...

Veeeery nice indeed!

Great work, and like everyone else I am amazed at how you are able to produce such quality so quickly...  :headscratch:
