Guildford Open Day 2021
« on: February 16, 2021, 03:55:59 PM »
This morning, my mailbox contained an invitation to exhibit some engines at the 2021 Guildford Open Day, to be held later this year, 3rd and 4th July

This may not be a return to normal, I guess that is still some way off. It is an attempt to come to terms and to live with the dreaded virus

The 2021 Guildford Open Day will be an outdoor event. Bring your own tent or Gazebo and display your work out in the open air, at a safe distance from the visitors. Tables and an engine running cage can be provided.

This is all subject to any local lock down conditions at the time. Hopefully infection rates will be low and the effects of the vaccination program will be having the desired effects in reducing risk. The low cost DIY format; means that the organisers or the expediters can withdraw, at a moments notice, without financial loss to either party.

It may not be a return to normal but it sure feels like a glimmer of light at the end of a long dark tunnel

See you there???

Mike

If I attend, social distancing rules will apply in my Gazebo. Get your own

Actually, you can use and you can then keep my old Gazebo. I will be buying a new concertina gazebo

The signs are looking favorable for the Guildford Gala over the weekend 3/4 July. Guildford is in Surrey UK, 28 miles SW of London.

It's a bring your own gazebo and models show. Display tables and an engine running cage are provided by the Guildford Club.

If any of you are free that weekend and want to attend, you are all very welcome.

If anyone wants to bring along their models (and a gazebo) that will be better still. Let me know and I will put you in touch with the Guildford Club's organizer; Bryan Finch.

Cheers

Mike

I have told Bryan that I intend on going on Saturday and bringing along something or other that I have made since the last show :headscratch:

This is of course dependent on me getting my second jab in time for it to be fully effective :Director:

Yesterday Bryan sent out an update on the show based on the current Covid restrictions. This morning I have confirmed to him that I will be attending on Saturday. We are promised our usual running cage so with a fair IC engine running we should have sufficient air flow/ventilation for the event :).

I still have not decided what to take

Glad to see things are returning to at least a semi-normal condition over there "across the pond". We have had a somewhat normal show schedule, at least here in North Carolina.

We are two days off from the show and I thought I would check in to see who is still going.

I have acquired a second hand Gazebo but would prefer not to have to take it as it is too big to fit in Minx's boot  the weather looks like we may need it :toilet_claw:

It will be sad not to see you there Mike. I am going with the assumption that this is likely to be the last we can all get together. :wallbang: I am looking forward to seeing Mike C's Stable of engines including the Scorpion, Gipsy and the Seagull he has just finished :cartwheel:

   Hi

I'm still going, we need to stir the air up to clear the virus. I'm taking my gazebo, I don't know if it's water proof.
Looks like I will be on my own for Sunday, I'm taking the Bentley, the Anzani, the Scorpion, a Mk1 Gipsy and a V-twin I will run
most of the engines, if it's not too wet.

I hope too see a few people that I know.

Some of the attendees of our group are no longer spring chickens :old: One really needs a mobility scooter to get him across the field and he currently is in denial that he needs one :ShakeHead:

There is also the risk that insufficient people come to the show and they down grade it to a two day track running without the other bits. The Show is already far from what it used to be :'(

All packed ready to go. I am taking along both of the Coles steam engines the bigger C-612 and the one that is still underway the C611.

Mike Coles has confirmed that he set off this morning for the show, which is good because I feared with so few MEM attendees that I would be left with loads of Sticky-whatsits  However I have been talked into leaving the boxes of Ice Cream Snickers behind, I was told with so few turning up it seemed a waste taking them as well and I have been promised that they will be eaten before I get home :pinkelephant: so it will be just the same as if I took them with me :noidea:

I don't expect any to be left :ShakeHead:

If you recall last time they held the Guildford show I opened a packet of 12 Sticky-whatits handed you one, I had one and Mike C had one and before Eric could break off from his conversation, with an increasing look of concern showing on his face ( he did not let his eyes off the box) 8 more had gone missing :headscratch: Eric blamed Mike C who denied any knowledge of what had happened to them ::) .

A bit later than intended

We (IC Engine Builder's Group) set up in the main field:

Mike's large Aero engines along the front and my assortment along the side.

Looking along our engines... Mike's Gipsy:

One of his Anzanis:

His Chenery Vee Twin:

His Gipsy Major that he is still building:

His Bentley BR2:

And his ABC Scorpion:

And a highly desirable boxed set of Castings :pinkelephant:

Round the corner...

I brought a selection of engines to enable discussion with the show attendees:

The engine on the left is a Titan 60 and next to it a Stentor. Behind Westbury's original Heinrici and my monster one. Followed by the Inverted CHUK:

Then the Coles C-612, AHC Diesel, Hicks Oscillating Engine and the Felgiebel:

On the end of the table another CHUK :embarassed: the Coles C-611 and the Rider-Ericsson.

Overall table view:

Better view of the Hicks:

CHUK:

CHUK:

Monster Coles C-612:

And the two Heinrici's

You may have noticed in the background of these photos Mike has been setting up in his cage for engine running ;)

Mike Started by running the Vee Twin:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iRyAxZbz6uk

The Anzani ran

The Gipsy:

And old reliable the Bentley:

Attendees were encouraged to stand down wind of the engines so they could appreciate the force of the engine (and get splattered with a fine spray of engine oil :-X ) The sensible ones just stood at the front:

Many happy hours looking out from our tent:

And just before we packed up at the end of the day:

A long very enjoyable day and other than one short shower the only other complaint I hear was that it was rather hot in the sun 8)

And the free bacon bap for breakfast and free cheese burger for lunch went down very well :P Which meant that we did not really need all those sticky-whatis but Mike generously kept hold of them just in case ::)

Thanks Guys. It took longer to resize the photos and load them than it did to take them  .

Did anyone notice the strap on Mike's engine running Workmate anchoring the back of it to the ground? If that was not there the workmate would be quickly go over due to the thrust from the engines.

Thanks for those Jo, maybe next year. Some of those Hydro engines look interesting and nice to see a couple of Lightweights in the collection.

Did any traders attend? and if so did you bring anything back for the little one?

Thanks for the photos, Jo. Looks like a lovely day. We had good weather here around Seattle too, cooler than we had last week, and more people out due to our national holiday.

Mike just sent me a picture of the cup we won.

Best news is that he gets to keep it for the year (and clean it  ) then bring it back for the show next year :)

Congratulations to both of you for putting on such a good display. And nice to have it recognised with the trophy.

Well done Mike.

One day I will get to the Guildford show, I hope.

I will send the trophy to you for the last 6 months as it was your engines as well Jo.

Mike,

Problem is, Jo has to keep it clean and sparkly ready to hand back for next year. :stir:
