Hey Ron

From Nigel Walton.  He has the channel on Youtube, and is providing prints    Hes asking for small donation.   The prints are good, and are metric.   But thats easy enough.   I made 3 parts last night and im programming the vise body at the moment.   Send him an email.

Been watching this youtube channel for the last 12 months, he is building a beautiful Lion loco.
Learnt a lot over the series, good for anyone who has aspirations of building a loco.

Setting up to machine the vise face contours, and then off to the lathe to bore to match the bushing.  Hope Samantha Bell's 4 jaw is big enough...or I'll have to blow the cobwebs off the big Logan!..

1117 for the body and 1144sp on everything else.  All other parts are bearing bronze.  It will have hard jaws (A2 tool steel), and a hardened anvil on the back (also A2).   Jaw width is 50mm.

They're getting there.....most of the heavy work  is done.  I still need to make the base swivels....but it's progressing pretty quickly.

I still need to make the anvils and jaws....one smooth hard jaw set and a copper jaw set...x2 of course

I briefly toyed with the idea of engine turning the outside of the vise.....but I think i finally talked myself out of it...thankfully

Painted ....black, with white letters I think......opinions will vary....

When you said "Engraving the name" I wondered if you meant 'Baby Wilton' or the name of the builder :)

CNC. I want the name to look as if it was cast...so its in relief..lots of whittling.....will probably take it down in 3 steps with 3 tools ...so I dont wear out a tool before im done.

Made the pivot keys tonight.   They need to be carburized and hardened and then stoned to a tight fit.  They simultaneously provide the base pivot and key the vise moving jaw.   They are both a bit too tight at the moment, but they'll free up once I stone and polish them

Are you doing anything to the surface (paint / Nickel Plating etc.) ?

Hey a follow up....

I've been using this vise now for just about 3 years.   It's a nice little vise for small work.   One problem though

It bolts to the front of the bench which means its always in the way  and it takes up valuable space when it's not needed.

Then another youtube superhero of mine   Steffan  Pahlow.  He mounted his to a fairly large lump of brass round stock......genius!

at 5 pounds, this vise is not going anywhere for normal uses.

I ordered up a 4" round off the bay and drew up my version of this and built it today.   It works great and I can just park the vise at the back of the bench when not in use.
