Solidworks 2020 install
« on: January 28, 2021, 09:45:04 PM »
As of the 2020 version of SW, Windows 7 is no longer supported.  I bought a new Windows 10 desktop to be able to run it, and I ran into some issues with the install.

The problem occurred when the Win10 OneDrive cloud component filled up (default is 5 GB).  I eventually deleted the OneDrive app from Win10 and started the downloads over in order to get it working.

Startup is amazingly fast compared with the older machine.

KVOM. I was wondering what the reason for you wanting to update Solidworks is? I'm still using using V 2013. Are there new features which would aid us model builders?

I get SW as a veteran, and each year's license expires.  Hence to keep using it I have to load the newest version each November.

That sounds like a good deal. It wouldn't work for me though, not a veteran. Seems like everyone is trying to move to cloud based stuff now. I had windows 7 and finally moved to 10 when MS wasn't going to support it anymore.

There have been some significant improvements since 2013, but in a lot of cases they are streamlining for efficiency - not so important to the home user.

Curious about the onedrive aspect though - I use onedrive and didn’t see it play any part in my SW2020 or 2021 install.

It might be that you are installing the software itself in your one-drive area. This is a bad idea for lots of reasons - I would remove it and re-install it in a separate directory OUTSIDE the on-drive area. You can then keep you model files in a one-drive folder so they get backed up, but I would never do it with the software itself.

Anyone can join the EAA and get their yearly SW license. USD40/year I think.

I did use it for a few months but it wouldn't get into my finger tips. Very full featured including CAM.

What’s the EAA?(Other than the Air Venture Oshkosh folks) What level of license is that?

One in the same- it stands for the Experimental Aircraft Association and it is a group/organization for homebuilt aircraft. If you are a member ($40/year) you can get a Solidworks license.

I fancied building a homebuilt aircraft myself for quite sometime but have put that venture on a permanent backburner (for now  ::) ;D) It really is an excellent organization. Visiting Oshkosh Air Venture is one of my treasured memories - I really hope to make it back someday.

That’s great - looks like it’s a personal edition of the software - you get all the key functionality that way. I’ll keep that in mind. For now I use a premium license so that I can do more advanced FEA etc, but when I no longer need that this will be just the ticket.

I went to Oshkosh one year - phenomenal experience.

I didn't intentionally use OneDrive on the install.  What happened though is that the download got directed to it until it was full (I just had the default 5GB), then the overflow went to the regular drive.  But when the install looked for the first overflow file it used OneDrive in the pathname.

In any case I needed a new machine as my 5 y/o box had serious lag and lockup issues.  Plus software like TurboTax now has dropped support for Win7 this year.  The new machine coincides with getting cable internet and dropping DSL.

According to SW link, 2020 is the last version to work with Win-7. Starting 2021 its Win-10.
