Model railroader in Delaware
« on: January 22, 2021, 05:47:58 PM »
Many years ago I built a 1.5" live steam engine, but when we moved to Delaware I no longer had enough flat land for the track so it was left behind with a friend.  Then I lost my mind and built a 40' sailboat.
After 20+ years exploring every gunk hold on the Chesapeake we finally sold it.  I now model in HO scale and build just about everything myself.  I ran into this forum while looking for information to help machine some small (3 or 3.5 mod, 7 or 8 mm dia) helical gears.  It looks like I'd first have to make my own involute gear cutters so, since the loads will be very light, I'm going to try using 3D printing to create a master and then cast the gear in epoxy resin.   My first river wheels cast in brass are about ready to be poured, but I'm still working on the tooling to mount them on my lathe and mill for final machining.

Welcome to the Forum

Gears are something I haven't mastered yet but there are plenty of members who should be able to help.
Best regards

With a 7-8mm diameter I'm guessing that you are going to be using resin printer rather than a filament printer.  What about just using one of the engineering resins and printing the gear?  You can always print another when/if it wears out.
