Greetings from Melbourne
« on: December 28, 2020, 11:32:00 PM »
Hello, my name is Terry and I live in Melbourne, Australia. Over the last 20 or so years, I have built a couple of small steam engines, a 3 inch dia. boiler and some tooling. My last completed engine was a Bob Shore's  "Silver Eagle" hit-or-miss I.C. engine. I am currently working on a Bolton No.7 horizontal steam engine.  As for workshop equipment, I have a "clone" of a Myford ML-7 lathe and a Sieg X-3 mill.

Hi Terry, welcome aboard from another Melbourne member.

I am currently building the Bolton No 5 and I am finding the castings excellent, I hope yours are the same for the No7.  I hope that you will start a build log and show us all how it’s going.

Hope you are enjoying this beautiful weather.

Hi MJM460,

I'm still finding my way around the forum so I hope this reply works.  I had a bit of a problem with the castings for the No.7.  Most of the larger components for the No.7 are made from Cast Iron and the first part that I tried to machine proved to be "chilled" in parts, and my mill just couldn't handle it.  I had bought the castings several years before hand (around 2008) from Minitech (which is no longer in business) so I couldn't return them. In the end, I found a heat treatment business in Melbourne that could anneal the castings and this fixed the problem. I also bought some carbide end mills and they seem much better than the el cheapo Chinese HSS one's I'd been using up until then. I'm guessing that I'm about 25-30% into the build.

I've also built a Bolton No.5 (I'll see if I can work out how to add a photo).

Cheers and thanks for interest,

Terry
