Cylinder liner fixing
« on: December 09, 2020, 12:45:44 PM »
Greetings all - hope you are all staying safe.

After a summer and autumn out of the workshop looking after our smallholding, the weather and wet ground conditions has now given me a window of opportunity to pick up my machining of castings for the Alyn Foundry Gardner O.

I have just about finished machining the cylinder block so will soon need to fix the liner. Graham's machining notes from the 1990s mention fixing the liner into the block with one of the Loctite retaining products.

Is this still the best material to use or has time and technology brought something better to the market?

Thanks....J

Loctite for me too, I tend to prefer 648 as it has a higher working temperature than the more common 638.

Hello Amblejo1.

As both Jo and Jason have stated the Loctite range has definitely expanded, however we're still using 638 high strength retainer here at the Alyn workshop.

My two youngest son's are building a Robinson and Gardner ( an off and on ) long term project but have recently glued in their cylinder liners. Following  Jo's advice we used pure Acetone to thoroughly clean the components before final assembly.

Cheers Graham.

Many thanks for the swift replies - looks like Loctite is the way to go. I have some acetone, so I'll give it a good clean before the final fit.

All the best....J

On my traction engines I am planning to heat shrink the liners in place. The cylinder in the oven and the liners in dry ice should give up to a 350°C temperature differential which in turn should allow an interference fit of a couple of thou without getting the liner stuck half way down.
