Hi to all,

Further to my earlier message I now have a question regarding the inner and outer cylinder mounting plates.

The drawings are quite clear but what I have received is posing a puzzle and I hope that someone will be able to point me in the right direction.

The question is about the inner mounting plate and I have received a bronze, or brass, casting which I believe is the inner part but is so different from the drawings that I am to sure.

The two pics attached show the family shot of the four main components and the outer cast iron piece is easy to identify and the inner piston rod guide is clear but the bronze part is the question and which way around does it go, assuming that it is even for the cylinder assembly.

Any help or advice most appreciated.

With best regards,

Mike

Mike,  the large casting is the inboard cylinder cover and the eccentric strap cast together.  I'm not sure about the small one.

Mike, Eric is correct...in your last picture, the rear cylinder cover is the leftmost piece and the eccentric strap joined to it. I used the spigot on the rear cylinder cover to chuck on after truing it up some. In doing so the side facing the tailstock can be machined to fit the cylinder bore. This casting is very generous in size so a good bit of material had to be removed.

Hi Eric and Bill,

Thanks for the reply and I was aware of the eccentric strap part but am surprised at the excess material for the inboard cylinder cover.

Sounds a great idea to hold the disc via the spigot for turning and sizing and then presumably just turn it around to finish the spigot down to the 0.313" size.

Will give it a try and take some pics for posting.

That's what I did Mike, but when you turn it around there isn't much to chuck on  unless you grab it on the OD. As I recall, after drilling and reaming the through hole with the first set-up, I flipped it around and chucked it lightly on the very shallow shoulder that fits in the cylinder, then used a live center to keep it centered and to keep pressure against the chuck to turn the .313" dia.  Once that is done you can grab the OD as needed to shorten the length of that .313" dia. part.

Hi Bill,

Trying to update the build log for the PMR engine but keep getting a response that I am not authorised to access the data base.

Any reason for this response.

Thanks,

Mike

Mike, no reason I know of. Does it only happen when trying to upload pictures?

Hi Bill,

Indeed it only seemed to stop me posting when I attached four reduced size pictures. I shall try again in a few minutes and see what happens.

Many thanks,

Mike

Mike, I am hoping it was just a glitch but will stay tuned to see if you are successful this time.

Hi Bill,

Was away for a few days so no chance of trying but back now so let's see.

If the system is working then  there will be four pics showing the progress on the guide rails, stand-offs and the little oil cups.

Best regards,

Mike

That seems to have done the trick Mike!  Good to see your progress on this. I am dealing with painting issues at the moment but looking forward to following your build.

Hi Bill,

Do you mean painting one of your engines or is it more of a domestic chore.

Today I shall be making a vice stop as per Bogstandards design and may just post a couple of pics once it is finished.

Best regards,

Mike

Mike, you're off to a good start. Mounting the frame to a base plate will be a great aid to keeping things straight and true.   I'm a gas engine kinda guy, but watching you and Bill build yours has me kind of thinking...... I'll check back to see your progress. Paul
