Title: F-M Eclipse Model
Post by: Ken K on June 10, 2014, 06:46:28 PM
I have a F-M Eclipse model that now runs well, but the plans are of no help, on how to install the governor. Have the CD that came with the kit, but it shows a diferent gonvernor, then the plans, call for.
Can any one help me out, on how the governor works? Picture would be real nice.

Do you have the series that was in Stationary Engine Magazine, that gives a few details of how the governor works and has photos of teh various parts.

Ken, give Tom Ball a call. He is the guy selling this kit, he is still on the Davis web site.

Another possibility is to send Reg Ingold a email, I He is good friends with tom, and I understand he built a bunch of these.

The CD that came with the kit, shows the pages, from the mag. The problem is they show a different governor system, then plans call for.

Ken K. I built an Eclipse some years ago and it is a good slow runner. The governor on mine consists of a curved brass pivoted weight on the inside of the half time gear. When the engine is up to speed the weight flies out against a pin attached to a lever which holds the exhaust valve open. The drawings showed a spring restraining the weight but I found the engine would run better without the spring. There is also an adjustable spring attached to the lever to give a degree of speed variation.

Hope this helps.

This is still available, the build series forms most of the book 'Stationary Engine magazine on Model Making'
Kelsey Publishing.

 Some pictures of engine:
 1. Shows brass gov wt. that is twice drawing, as plans call for, with spring.
You took this spring out  Right.
 2. Show gov. latched.
3. Show gov. un latched.
There is only about .020" clearance between exhaust valve and lifter. Did toy have more?
The latch rests on the side of block, and is about 1/8" from valve spring. Was yours closer?
There is a threaed hole in gov. part, as called for in drawings. Is this to attach spring in gov.?

The gov works, whe engine runs, but at a fast speed.
Cutting another 1/16" off valve length helped latch up.
Need to determine how to get a spring, in it, to slow it down more.
