Title: What's In The Box **** A New Toy For Whiskey
Post by: Tennessee Whiskey on May 31, 2014, 10:55:55 PM
Hi boys and girl. I had a mysterious urge the other day and set about a new machine purchase. Now, there are a few of my beer drinking buddies here that know what's in the box, so, Y'all be fair and don't give it away right off the bat, let's let everybody else have a chance. The winner will receive the smoked meat sampler, white beans, turnip greens and fried cornbread with banana pudding or blackberry cobbler for dessert, you can have beer, sweet tea, coffee, or buttermilk to drink.  I've been up since 2am this morning, so, I'm gonna let y'all work on it for awhile and if I ain't back tonight I'll see y'all tomorrow.

Here's The Box'

Gotta be careful...
When a redneck gets a little bit of money and he buys new tools instead of beer or hot rods he's outgrowing the redneck image. Pretty soon he won't be associating with us common folks.
Congrats Eric.  Has to be a machine because even you cant drink that much beer.

Folks we have a winner. Congratulations to Frazier AKA fcheslop. Thanks to everybody for playing along and there were some great guesses, matter of fact I'm letting Lou read them to make my Christmas list  >:D. I have been wanting a grinder for awhile now. I looked at the Tormach PSG at Cabin Fever and had it a few more features I'd have bought it, but, kept looking. I looked at used machines and this one. Most of the used ones anywhere near me were either well worn or needed all their accessories, i.e. chuck etc., plus having to buy a VFD. So, with the help of some great guys I know I decided this one would do all I ever would want to do. It is installed and leveled, wheel has been rang, balanced, and dressed. I have ground one piece, but, not having run a grinder in 35 years, I'm in the re-learn mode still. So here what was in the box.

I have an older 6x18 manual grinder I've been using a lot in the past weeks.  Obviously having the motorized feeds and coolant will make things easier and better using that.  FWIW I've been grinding castings, typically .002" material removal each pass with a .050" stepover, and then a finish pass of .0005" with a .025" stepover.  With coolant you can take off more at a time without burning the metal.

Turning the cranks is time consuming, but I do get in a sort of rhythm doing it.  Would love yours.

Yes, I'm still around. I've been kinda quiet lately, with just a short post here and there, but, I still read every post, every day, and that ain't no poop. Let me calmly, and I stress CALMLY  :cussing: :hammerbash: :DrinkPint:   :cussing:, tell y'all about the grinder. That SOB is dead in the water. I've had trouble with surface finish since day one. At first I thought it was just because I hadn't run a grinder for 36 years. Then I relearned how to dress a wheel and not polish or burnish it (Hey, I wanted it super smooth). Then I followed the guide, or thought I did in the Enco book when I ordered grinding wheels, only to be told I was all wrong. I still ain't sure on that one, but hey, I'm hardheaded. Neither here nor there, when my BIL  ( a retired T&D maker)came to visit, I wanted him to grind the chuck in. After the "WHEEL NONO" speech, he finally selected a wheel, balanced and dressed it, and set to work. The first thing he said when he turned it on was; "Is it always this loud?" Three passes and he says; this thing is skipping so bad I can't grind this chuck. AH HA, it wasn't just me. Damn thing has terrible vibration, transmitting to the grinding medium. First call to dear old papagrizz, I'm told to separate motor and run. Motor has a good bit of vibration, especially when coasting to a stop. Spindle feels really smooth and shows not a frogs' hair of runout. Last Monday was told new motor was shipping out.  After several phone calls with dear old Grizzly, just moments ago I was told one was happily winging it's way from the factory, YEP IN CHINA :zap: :cussing: :DrinkPint:  and it should arrive here in about 10 days. To use a phrase of a member ,"Constrain my trembling hands" . I'll just let y'all pick it up from here, I think you know what direction I'm headed and Hell, it's Friday  :DrinkPint: :lolb:

A little update. After explaining to the guy who I talked to today that I was trying really hard to be as polite as they were, it was getting pretty hard. Well I'll be Steamer's brother if they didn't call back and say they were shipping one from the Wa. facility and I should have it first of the week. I'm betting they pulled the one off of the display unit.

This isn't a new marketing issue

Many years ago I purchased my first 1/4 HP bench mounted 3/8 chuck capacity pedestal drill

Opened the box to find an additional 1/4 HP motor marked 240/50...... :slap:

OK that made sense for OZ electricity rang the sales agent only to be told.......

"Some drills were fitted with unmarked motors that were actually wound for 110/60  ...    & the motors may burn out when started for the first time :zap:....so we have included a replacement 240/50 motor just in case"  .....Derek

I am hoping the motor is all that's the matter Whiskey. For grinding applications they obviously need to be well balanced or the best spindle in the world will transmit some vibration. Keep us posted once the new motor comes in and is in place.

You did good with the warranty Eric.

Several years ago when I was in UK, JohnSom (HMEM) gave me one of the pens he had made. When it ran out of ink a couple of months ago, I rang him to complain and was told that the 30/30 warranty was 30 seconds or 30 paces whichever came first!

Too bad about the motor, but hopefully the new one will do the trick. I heard somewhere (maybe on HSM or possibly DIYelectricCar) that the Chinese admit to not making very good motors. But there always seem to be many brand name motors on eBay for quite cheap, although mostly I have been looking at three phase. They are probably your best bet anyway, along with a VFD that will work on single phase. A good three phase motor should have very little torque ripple, and with good bearings and a balanced rotor, there should be practically no vibration.  8)

Soon you will be grinding metal, and not your teeth!

Just thought I would give y'all a little update. I awoke this morning to a shipping confirmation from good old Grizzy. It left WA. state last night and is expected to arrive by end of day June 30. Boys, that's 17 days since I reported the problem. I ain't a real happy camper with old papa Grizz (if you're reading). You would think they might have sprung for a little extra on the shipping, but, oh no, good old UPS ground. I sure hopes this fixes it.

Well, me being a sharing person, I thought I'd share some of my misery with y'all. I got the new motor yesterday and now because it's quieter I can hear all the vibration and noise coming from the machine. You can feel it even down in the heavy cast iron base and all the way up to the Z feed hand wheel. I got on the phone with tech support and since my shop is a metal building, cell service sucks and you have to stand near a window. Well, I left the grinder running and ask the tech if he could hear that noise. He said yeah, but, please don't tell me that's the grinder I'm hearing. You are darn tooting it is and he couldn't believe it, then he really freaked out when I told him I was 12 feet away from the machine. They pulled the motor off of a new grinder in stock at their Wa. warehouse, so, now it looks like they are going to be robbing it's spindle also. The saga continues.

Maybe you need to do a few odds and ends on your model rather than fighting with these    tools

You must have espn2 Jo :lolb: :lolb: I did get the quarter horse put back together and running after it's paint job had been curing for awhile. I hope to get it on a base this week and I'll post it in the showcase.

Well Whiskey

You are a far more patient man than I am , That grinder would have been wheeled out side, supplier rang up and told in no uncertain terms come and fetch it back at their expense , my cash is perfect so should the new machine

Here in the UK you can make life difficult with guarantee claims for a refund if you accept a repair , not sure about the lemon law in the States
