The Midlands show is only two weeks away :o I was just wondering who else is going?
I will be going on the Friday again. Does any one want to meet up like we did last year?
There looks to be lots of traders going to the show 8)
Jo
-
Maybe Friday, maybe Saturday...
Simon.

Hi Jo,
I shall be going for the Thursday afternoon and Friday morning so gladly meet up and perhaps even ask a couple of questions about the new casting kit I prised from your collection .
Blackgates do show the single version as a kit and I shall be writing to them for the cost and availability of the trunk guides as well some of the other pieces to give me an idea of overall costs.
Shall we meet at the cafeteria again like last year :DrinkPint:?

Thursday AND Friday so you are likely to beat me to any casting sets :( I will just have to accept that I am having another two delivered this weekend but won't be allowed to have more than a little fondle as they have to go away until Xmas
I would phone Blackgates, they are no doubt already looking to pack for the show and they may need a little bit of time to go through the Clarkson stuff to see if they can find the bits you may want to buy.
As you are going for the morning say 11:30 around the Caff? :)
Jo
-
Jo,
11:30 around the cafe area will be fine and then I can start driving back home around 2pm and try to avoid the worst of the traffic going south.
I shall try to leave you some castings, assuming I can find some, though don't think you are referring to the Stuart sets
Mike
-
Thursday or possibly Friday. I think I should be elsewhere on the Friday, but for the life of me I cant remember where.
Hoping Machine DRO will have some offers on as will need some scales for the new to me Super 7. The scales on my ML7 are not quite right for the new machine. Cross-slide scale too short and carriage scale is glass but I want to move to the smaller section magnetic so as to be able to fit the taper turning attachment it came with.

They did not have any deals at the ME show but they were not taking any money either from what I saw so you may be lucky if you take some cash to flash ;)
Sorry based on the poor take up of cakes last year I am not planning on taking any this year, they take up too much casting space :disappointed:
Jo

However if you visit the right ME forums you will find a Discount code that will allow you to make savings on items ordered and then collected at the show :)
J
-
You mean the MIDCOL code? You have to order the stuff and select for collection before the show to get your 5% discount.
Jo
Edit: actually if you use the code MEW15 on their website you will get a 15% discount

Thats the one and why I said make savings on items ordered and then collected at the show

I have been sent through notification that the road works on the way to the show near the M40 Junction 12 is still on going :(
It is now possible to get on/off from the South this year but they are suggesting rather than driving past Aston Martin and Jaguar Land Rover we:
1 Turn right from the M40 and head towards Bishops Itchington (B4451)
2 After 2 miles turn left at the small roundabout up Plough Lane for 1.2miles
3 Turn right up Bush Heath Road to Harbury.
4 At the first junction continue straight on to the next junction turning left on to the A425 to Lemington Spa.
5 The exhibition carpark will be found on the right after approx. 1.3 miles.
I had a quick scan on Google maps and those roads look good
But you will have to mess around if you are coming from the north and possibly come off the M40 at Junction 14 !!!
Jo
-
Err .. why would anyone coming from the North be on the M40? They've not moved it have they? :headscratch:
I'll do M1(S), M69, A46, ... Fosse Way.
Dave
-
That's for those half way northerners i.e. anyone coming from Brummagem ;)
Jo
-
Birmingham?
They're not 'half-way'. They're 'half-baked'. ;D
Dave
-
I'll be there on Friday Jo, driving from Redditch on the A4189, much less bother than the M42/M40.
Andy
-
I'll be there too on the Friday with the old man.
Simon.
-
I'll probably go Friday or possibly Sunday if I don't get rid of this 'autumn sniffles' or whatever it is I've got.
Feel knackered, shoving stuff about to accommodate my new SIEG SC3 coming tomorrow.
Ultimately to be my 'house lathe'. Thought I'd indulge seeing as ARC are having a '10% off Web Orders' episode at the moment.
Dave
-
I love models, however, don't think I could drive by Aston Martin and Jaguar without stopping   :lolb:
Cletus

A quick reminder a couple of us will be in the catering area (down stairs by the traction engine running area) at 11:30 for a coffee and a chin wag. You are welcome to join us.
I'm bringing Jaffa cakes :naughty:
Jo
-
Went there yesterday. The diversion signs for the model show are smaller finger post ones but they have the normal large yellow diversion route signs which take you right to the entrance.
Jo at £4 for a sausage bap your Jaffa cakes will not last long.
-
My friend Rob and I are hoping to be at the show on Saturday from eleven o'clock onwards. A chance to meet up with old friends and make some new ones. As well as stock up on a few shortages.
My best regards
Gray,
-
Hoping to go tomorrow.
Are the road works people have discussed only affecting the Fosse Way south of the venue? I was intending getting there using the Fosse Way north of Leamington.
Steve
-
Steve:
Driving Fosse Way / A423 / A45 / M69 etc. fairly clear when I came back @ 12:30 ish. today.
Odd bits of delay but nothing too gruesome.
My Satnav however, on the way down, screwed me up at the end of the Coventry Eastern Bypass, sent me to the wretched airport ... >:(
Must have got baffled in the road-works . Anyway, a few disciplinary profanities and it worked fine on the return journey
Dave
-
Thanks Dave, now all I have to do is get to tomorrow morning without someone finding me something I must do instead.....
Steve
-
:headscratch: Not sure what happened to Mike B but five of us sat down for Jaffa cakes at 11:30 :).
If you kept your eyes open there were a few new engines this year. There were the Clarkson engines on the Blackgates stall (yes Mike they will sell all the missing castings  you just need to make contact) the small vertical which is very reasonably priced and its more expensive big sister.
Then there were some pumps
Jo
-
On the club stands were some interesting horizontals and beam engines

A few more on a display stand then another club stand.
Jo

And they continued.
Andy Johnson's Bentley was rather nice :embarassed: but for some reason he felt the need to mount it on a chassis and even fly it  He tells me he had to put a modern carb on it so he can fly it upside down :paranoia:
Jo
-
The SMEE always have interesting engines.
Jo
-
A few more SMEE
Jo
-
Last lot ;)
There was a good show of engines at the show and a few casting sets, which SCO caught me having a fondle of :embarassed: But I am sure he will tell you I did not buy one :hellno:
Jo
-
Thanks for all those Jo, you have can spend the rest of the evening with your feet up and some red lubrication.
J
-
Great variety of great engines there - thanks for the pics!
-
Many thanks Jo, lots of interesting engines. I am sure the Jaffa cakes were good also :)
Bill
-
Hi Jo,
Thanks for taking and posting all the great pictures; lots of nice engines on display there.
Dave
-
I can definitely confirm I did not see Jo not buying any castings ;-)
Simon.

Jo
-
Simon, just because you did not see it does not mean Jo was not doing dodgy deals in a dark corner or in the car park ;)
-
The double negative makes a positive - although I didn't see the purse actually open I did see carrier bags being passed across the counter!
Come on Jo - show us the dirigible engine castings.
Simon.
-
Simon, just because you did not see it does not mean Jo was not doing dodgy deals in a dark corner or in the car park ;)
The dealing in the carpark was nothing to do with me :hellno:
As I mentioned I did not buy one casting set, it was two :mischief:
Jo
-
You see Simon, it all starts with an innocent Jaffa or two and then before you know it illicit goods are changine hands.
Jo I think I may forgive you if you abandon the triples provided you move the Merc engine to the top of your to make list :mischief:
-
Great pictures Jo (although I must say that I was a little disappointed that there wasn't a single picture of the Jaffa cakes). :naughty: Thanks for posting.
I'm really impressed with the sheer volume and variety of engines on display.
Jim
-
Jo,
Thanks for the pix. Decided to give it a miss this year.
Rod

Remind me: Why would I want forgiveness from you? :noidea:
Thanks Jim, Sorry we had to be secret Jaffa Cake eaters as they didn't want people sitting at the tables eating their own food. I don't think they would have believed we found their coffee was bit damp and it necessary to use them to soak it up .
There were other types of models on display but I never remember to photograph those ::) Having said that the 10 1/4" C class Shay was desirable ;).
Jo
-
Jo
It was good to be able to catch up with you and the others and thanks for offer of the illicit Jaffas. The pics that will fill in the gaps of the few I did take.
I did notice rails on at least one of yours.

Jason was good enough to post a video of the bits that my camera failed to photograph

Brilliant video from Jason
Thanks
-
Many thanks indeed for posting your superb video Jason, I didn't get to the show, and it was great to get that very full review of it - it looked as if it was a good show.
Thanks also to Jo for the engine photo album. Dave
-
Stunning variety of engines there, thanks!
-
Thanks Jason, that was wonderful!
Dave

Hi Jason,
A very professional video of the midlands show, thanks so much for taking the time and trouble in making it. Unfortunately I was unable to attend this year so your video went some way towards making up for it. Sadly it seems that some of the shows are dwindling somewhat but the Midlands show seems to be getting bigger and better. I hope so. Hopefully I will be able to attend next year.
Thanks again and well done
John
-
Jason, thanks for posting. I went over to youtube so I could watch the video full screen and there discovered your videos of previous shows, thanks for all of them. I managed to get there Saturday and it made me realise how much I miss the heady smell of coal smoke, steam and oil.
Regards,
Steve

Jason,
Thanks for the video of the Midlands show. Just out of curiosity for those of us in the Colonies. Is the green on the trains the predecessor to British racing green? :mischief:

That is an amazing show you folks have over there!
I have a question........... as a newcomer to all this. Were those small tractors that were pulling folks around the infield, models of various larger tractors? I found them to be quite interesting.
I'd probably need a mill and lathe larger than my Sherlines to build one of those........huh! :)
Jim
-
Thank you to Jo for posting the pictures and Jason for posting the video
I have a couple of questions from the video:
It looked like there was quite a bit of 16mm narrow gauge there, was this from the Society or just models that happened to be there? (The 16mm Narrow Gauge Society was formed in my parents dinning room)
Was that a model gas turbine locomotive, 3 1/2 inch gauge?
There were a couple of what looked like series 1 Land Rovers out with the traction engines, has some one put out some plans?
Was that a glimpse of a ETW road roller near the end?
-

Some years ago an acquaintance bought a commercially made 'ride on' landy for his daughter which looked similar to the ones at MMEX. I don't think it was quite so big though, but then my memory might be adrift .. :old:
This seems familiar but not sure.

Far from cheap IIRC, but then he wasn't short of akkers ... not until his (ex) Mrs. had the skin off his back anyway ... ;D
Dave
-
Yes that does look like a DX roller behind the double Tangye
and Dave beat me to Toylaner

There was a huge variety of different greens (and many other colours) used for painting british locomotives, but after nationalisation in 1948, they eventually settled on 'Brunswick green'. This is similar to, but not quite the same as, the bronze green used earlier by the Great Western, which in turn is a close match to Land Rover green. British Racing green is a bluer shade and is not connected in any way AFAIK. Perhaps the oddest 'green' was 'Stroudley's Improved Locomotive green', used by him on the LBSC. It was actually something like yellow ochre.

Some traction engine models are freelance, but most are (often very acurate) models of full size prototypes. In recent years the scale has got as large as half-size, but most are 1/4 or 1/3 scale. A 1/8 scale model will pull its driver.
-
Jason,
Thanks I didn't know shades of green were so popular on trains. Although I am aware that all British racing green's are not created equal, different shades on different brands of cars.

Thanks for the pics, Jo, and the video, Jason.
Love pic 1724 - that's the sister engine to my compound, which also trialled the first batch of castings :whoohoo:
