Title: Health Update
Post by: cfellows on October 25, 2018, 08:12:42 PM
It looks like the Maudslay model steam engine I recently completed will be my Swan's Song.  I got word last week that my cancer is back and I've exhausted all treatment options.  My oncologist tells me I have a few months left.  I've been fighting this battle for 3 1/2 years, so I was more or less prepared for the news.

My two son's are coming to Austin in a couple of weeks to collect all my tools, so I won't be doing any more projects.  I'll have to get my machining fix from this forum and youtube.   :) Thanks to all of you for you friendship and support.

Chuck

Dear Chuck

I can't find any nice things to say about that damned decease or what it does to people or their loved ones ....

But I can thank you for your fantastic input and builds on this forum  :praise2: and confirm that you went with a "bang" (the Maudslay model steam engine). I'm sure you will be remembered, and that your builds here will continue to inspire long into the future. Thank you very much my Internet friend and I really hope that your last days here will not be too bad, all things considered.

Best wishes

Chuck best wishes from both of us .. Any further help you can provide the forum members to enable our model engine building will be greatly appreciated. Do you have any model engine building challenges that you think we, the forum members, should try to solve?

Jo & Surus

P.S. Thankfully Surus, when extracted, was proven not to be as cancerous as he was originally was thought to be :paranoia: I do wonder about his casting fascination

Hi Chuck,

Sorry to read that the cancer is back and there are no further treatment options.

I am on the same pathway but a little earlier in the timeline so I have some idea of what you have been through and are facing.

Thank you for your contributions to our hobby from the early days of HMEM through to today.

I sincerely hope the final part of your journey will be as comfortable as possible.

Kindest Regards
Bob

Hi Chuck, I am so sad to hear that news.

Your work and knowledge is known to the far corners of the earth through your posts on this forum.   They are helpful to us all, and will always be worth reading again for the gems they contain.

Your courage in facing this cancer has also been an inspiration to us everywhere.

You and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers in the months ahead.

Chuck,

I'm so sorry to hear the news.

Your work was some of the first that I really started noticing when I got involved in this hobby and on these forums. I especially appreciate all your work in solving little shop and tool problems as you built some very nice engines. I have several of your tool buiilds on my "round tuit" list, as well as the many mental notes I have made of ways you approached problem solving in engine builds.

I will miss your projects, but I hope to see some more posts from you as long as you feel up to it.

It is sad to contemplate what our little part of the world will be like with your absence. I hope to avoid the past tense in thinking and talking, but I envision you somewhere in modelers' heaven providing advice and encouragement to everyone. My fantasy is that perhaps Cfellows will be listed in some other-worldly build list of something like a 16-cylinder side shaft built on a Rong-Fu modified for 5-axis cnc. (Chuckle).

Best of the Best to You,

ShopShoe

Chuck,

This is sad news indeed. I was aware that you've been dealing with cancer for some time now and was always hoping that you would beat it completely. As folks have said, you're contributions here on MEM will be missed. Even more so will be your upfront and up-beat attitude you have in dealing with this horrible disease and situation. Your bravery and attitude certainly provides a wonderful blueprint for the rest of us to aspire to when that inevitable time comes.

Take care, Jim

Chuck,   I will always think of you as a former fellow Iowan who grew up not to far from where I did in south western Iowa. I just wish I could have met you and shook your hand. You were also the person who helped me post my first photo's on here since I am not very computer savvy. For over 10 years now it has always been a treat to log on and see that CHUCK  FELLOWS has started a new project or has a new idea on how to do something. I have truly loved all your work and especially your unique air powered engines. I do think of you as a good friend. I wish you and your wife the very best. Thank you for everything.     Gary K.

Very sad to hear your news Chuck. It comes to us all eventually one way or another I am afraid, but it does seem cruel.

On a brighter note my wife had a scan three weeks ago, and has just had the good news today that her cancer has not spread since having an affected kidney removed a year ago.

Chuck,

Thank you, all, for you kind and thoughtful words.  For now I'm feeling pretty normal as my body continues to recover from my last chemo treatment 4 weeks ago and I'm not yet feeling any effects from the cancer.   Many of my latest model engines will go to my two sons along with my lathe, mill, and other metal working tools.  They are both makers, one in electronics/computers and the other in woodworking and RC vehicles.  They are both anxious to get into metal working and I'm glad I can supply them with the tools they'll need.

I'll continue posting on the forum as long as I'm able.

His Chuck,
At a time like this one never knows what to say. We who have been around for many years have encountered this disease through family members or friends. My deepest heartfelt thoughts go with you at this time. Although I have benefited from so many of your projects the one that will always bring you to mind is cutting helical gears. It's almost like I try to design an engine using them because they are so neat.
If there is a silver lining to your situation it's that your sons will be carrying on your legacy through their interests and can say that they learned from one of the best.
Take care my friend.
George D. Britnell

Many good things have been said, I would like to echo them. Thanks for your contributions to us here in the forum. I lost both my parents to one form of cancer or another. This time in life comes to each of us but, we usually want it later than sooner. Your great tips and engine builds are enjoyed by all here. I'll be praying for you as time goes on.

Chuck, I'm truly saddened to hear this news. I read this a couple of days ago but couldn't think of what to say about it.

It was you that got me into this model engineering community the first time I saw your flat four air motor & then the Cirrus V8. I (like the rest) have always looked forward to the posts by "CFELLOWS") you are truly an inspiration with your engine, tooling, & all your other posts.

Keep the posts coming Chuck.... when you can...& please take care.

I can only wish and pray that you can enjoy life for as long as it makes sense. Like John, I just haven't known what to say the last few days. You have been an inspiration and more.

I was going to do a 'build log' about this but never did. But here is one of the things you posted about that, when I finished it, has made a really big difference in milling operations. I simple adapted the work that BogStandard started and you continued:

Best wishes,

Just saw this thread.  This news saddens me.  I was introduced to your work by George Britnell only a short time ago when he steered me to your helical gear cutting fixture.  Following your drawings I was able to make a gear cutting fixture and cut the helical gears for a project that has currently taken a back seat but will receive attention again soon.  I really appreciate the expertise you have brought to this hobby.  The loss of your your knowledge and experience will leave a hole that will be hard to fill.  I wish I could have met you and knew you better.

Sincerely

Craig

Chuck,

I don't post here often enough, and everyone's already said anything I could have said - and probably better than I'd have said it too. I will think of you often. You were one of the very first posters here (after the Great HMEM Debacle of 2012), and I see you've posted some wonderful stuff. I probably haven't said "Thank you" for your input, which all helps to make this forum the great place that it is.

So, all I can say is: A heartfelt Thank You, for your posts, for your awesome skills, and for letting us come along for the ride. Your work here will never be forgotten - people will be reading your posts and marvelling at your creations for years to come. There's not many people on this planet who get to leave that kind of legacy.

Now, in the mean time, hang in there you old bugger...

All the best,
Ade.

Thank you again

Chuck - My friend Chris told me about your situation but like Hugh I have just seen this thread for the first time. I have read it from end to end and, like Hugh, could not possibly add anything further to the kind appreciative words so far said by so many.

My thanks for what you have given to this forum, I have followed most of your posting over the years and not least the Maudsley engine which proved a fine example of your skills and knowledge.

I hope you are as pain free as possible in coming days and hope you can bless us with a few more posts as yet

Best Regards - Tug
