Post by: b.lindsey on April 10, 2015, 01:24:42 AM
OK, new thread for pictures as they become available. I will kick it off with one from dinner tonight...left to right...sshire, b.lindsey, dreeves, and maury. Will look forward to seeing more of you tomorrow once the show gets cranked up!

Anyone with CF pictures from 2015 feel free to add them to this thread.

I used to have a Delta surface grinder just like that one.

It's kind of sad to see models auctioned off but I guess that is the way goes for some of them; hopefully mine won't meet the same demise.

And that is me, right behind Dave, behind the waiter bringing  our dinner- I wanted to eat before drinking!

It looks like its going to be another great show- Gary said they had a ton of stuff for auctions all day Friday and Saturday. And looking at the vendors unloading this afternoon we will have lots of good stuff to look at.

Here are some pictures from today...still more members will be arriving this evening and tomorrow. We hope to have 25+ for the group photo tomorrow afternoon.

Walking around this morning before things got cranked up Stan and I spotted this neat arrangement...an IC engine powering a compressor which in turn powered two small air engines.

Here's an unusual machine, and, I believe Brian hasn't built one (yet)

Steam engine drives pizza slicer.

I didn't see it in action but maybe a video tomorrow?

Cheers,
Phil

Please identify the green, two-cylinder, stationary engine that was built by Doug Kelly?  Fairbanks????  Is it a kit?....bar-stock design?....do drawings exist?

Frank, it is a Bates & Edmonds. Doug has drawn it but he said the plans are not yet available. It is a bar stock engine, not from castings.

Please tell George that some good closeup pictures of that Gatling and the revolver(?) behind it would certainly be well received.  I'm sure the members would enjoy seeing the miniature Mannlicher as well.

B. Lindsey...thanks so much for the engine identification.  Can you believe that I just this second, saw the little sign next to the photographed engine.

Thanks for the additional information.  So, it's a bar-stock design, and plans are not yet available.  : ((
Looking forward to the publishing of these drawings.

I really love these photos from these shows.  I get to see some nice models and also get to put faces to some of the names.  Thank you very much.

Also loved the photo of what looks like an M2 and the miniature Gatling.  What's behind the gatling? A colt SAA?

Bill,

Thanks for those pictures.  Now ask George if he would be willing to adopt me.  On second thought, never mind; even I wouldn't want me as an offspring.

You guys are doing a spectacular job of photographing the action.  It's very much appreciated by those of us who can't attend.  Keep up the good work.

MEM Members-

It was great to see everyone.  What a great bunch of guys.  My son and I really enjoyed the show.  The MEM area had some beautiful engines in it.  Spectacular work!

The highlight was meeting George and seeing his incredible work.  George's work is beyond words.  Anyone who ever has an opportunity to goto a show and see it, do not miss it.

And finally, a special thanks to Stan for organizing the MEM area.  Very well done. Thank you.

I thought you might like a photo of Cinderella sweeping her workshop and bemoaning her absence from the festivities. You all look like you are having a great time.

Thanks so much for all the photos of Cabin Fever 2015, and especially for taking some close-up shots of the Doug Kelly's,  Bates and Edmonds stationary engine.  Hoping that drawings will follow.

I posted some other comments last night....but, they have vanished into the ethers.  Maybe I clicked the wrong button.  I don't see them in print.

It was great seeing everyone.
The world of MEM had a great showing and seemed significantly larger than previous years. A great showing.
I wish I could have stayed...once again family got in the way.

But now the kids are (finally) out. And next year's schedule will make my having to help in the garden a little harder  ;D

I missed seeing some of the other usual suspects. I hope you all make it next year.

For those of you who were there-  It RUNS!  I didn't even have to play with it.  I put air to it and it ran.  Damn, I wished I tried it yesterday at Cabin Fever!

1/4 scale Elmer's Tiny (Ultra Tiny).  .046 Bore x .046 stroke.

Now I have to try and remember my account info for YouTube so I can post it up.

It's always nice to see what's going on at shows, and even though I can only dream of one day attending a show or two in person, it's heart-warming to see fellow hobbyists having a great time  :drinking-41:

I greatly enjoyed attending the show again this year and seeing "old" friends and making new ones. This group is like an extended family and I am glad that I have started down this slick road of model engine making.

Here is a video that I made of this year's show, although mostly of my "TigTac" and George's impressive gas-powered models. Hopefully by next year I'll be in better shape and less pain after my upcoming back operations. You may be able to see my pain through my smiles in some of the pictures shown in other posts.

I just got home about an hour ago. Unloaded the car, sat down and talked with the wife, and headed for the computer to drop a short note about the show.
First of all I would like to thank Stan Shire for saving me some space and putting up the MEM banner. Second thank you goes to all the guys who helped me unload and set up.
What a great bunch of guys. I only had one chance to do a quick go-round as I was on my feet from 9:00 a.m. till 4:30 p.m. Saturday talking with the crowds and running the engines almost non stop.
Dinner was great both nights, the company and the conversation.
Don, it was great to meet you and your wife. I hope I didn't put her on the spot with my show questions.
We need Bill and some people down south to put on a show in their neck of the woods.
Thanks gentlemen,
George D. Britnell

Hi guys,
Sorry I did not get to spend a lot of time with you all.  I had a great time as usual and it was great to talk to those of you that I could connect with. As an exhibitor with another group, the Rough & Tumble gang, I found it hard to break away and chat.  DReeves, SShire, Mosey, XLnotch, B. Lindsey and others, thanks for showing me your models and explaining their operating features.  What a great bunch of gearheads.

Personally I'd like to thank this guy

He took a lot of time to coordinate the MEM gang and he had some super engines on display.  Sorry about the fuzzy pic Stan, but remember I'm just a rookie and I didn't have my Nikon and tripod with me :naughty:

Cheers,

Ok, I'm back amongst the living,  a 20 hour day Saturday cooking  and a good bit of Kentucky straight bourbon(they bought the single barrel stuff  8)) put me down for a while.  I really want to say that by everyone saying how much they missed me makes me feel warm all over.  Looks like y'all had a great showing and that makes me happy also.  I've certainly enjoyed all the pics and it made me both proud and sad.  To all the regular old gang, and the rest I was so looking forward to seeing and meeting;  " till next time ". I'm not even going to try and make any redneck humor as usual,  ' cause  you've just shown me (and the rest ) what a wonderful bunch of guys you are. And everyone is correct,  as long as Vern (Stan) is in charge of the "colors" it'll be a top notch presentation  :praise2: To those I owe a  PM reply to, hang on I'll get it done. I have this mental image of Stan on the sidewalk outside a seedy biker bar in the worst part of Philly...

As he pulls his long overcoat open, "Psst, fella,  wanna see an engine?"

Sorry, Stan, couldn't resist.

Exhibiting engines can be both fun and rewarding.  Some time back I was invited by a local middle school to show some engines.  In my presentation, I attempted to convey some of the history of the development of prime movers during the Industrial Revolution.

First I talked about the earliest atmospheric steam engines and how they condensed the steam inside the cylinder to capture the force of the atmospheric pressure.  Lacking an engine of that type I told them that a flamenfresser did something similar and demonstrated one of those.

After a discussion of the power limitation imposed by using atmospheric pressure, I introduced the idea of letting the steam expand inside the engine and ran two of my mill engine models, explaining that the boiler used to make steam was dangerous in a classroom setting so we would be using compressed air.

Finally, an explanation that boiler explosions killed people in the day provided a segue into the idea of a steamless engine that used the heat source directly, i.e., a Stirling.

The whole talk/demo lasted perhaps 25 minutes.  To provide some entertainment I finished by letting students "operate" two of the breath-powered engines I had brought.

Everyone, including the teachers, seemed delighted by the presentation and the Q&A session at the end provided some perceptive and entertaining queries.  I was invited back several times after that.

I encourage all of you to get in touch with your local middle schools and see if they would appreciate a similar presentation.  It's a fun outing and the kids get to see stuff unavailable in the usual curriculum as well as learn something about our industrial history.

Marv-

Unfortunately in today's world, in some districts, you need to have your clearances along with a background check in order to enter a classroom.  This applies to the parents as well.  I live in the sticks and this is how our district operates.

Frankly, in über-nanny state California, I was surprised too that they would allow anyone with a functioning mind into a classroom but this was a private school so perhaps they felt that education was more important than mindless, zero-tolerance BS.

I took my engine to the local Porsche and BMW dealers to show the boys. They went positively out of their minds with interest and appreciation, wanting the details of the inside parts, cranks, cams, etc.
It is a very rewarding experience, especially with the mechanics.

I carry breath-powered engines in my pocket when I visit technical purveyors, e.g., metal yards, tool stores, etc..

When I get the seemingly inevitable, "What are you making?" query, I whip them out and say, "Well, I build little engines."  It's amazing how many private stashes this simple act can unlimber, how many discounts and freebies magically appear.  They also work as a magic key to gain entry to the normally off-limit engine spaces in ships and locomotives.

I don't recall seeing your breath-powered engines described anywhere. I assume they're wobblers. What is the approximate bore, and what materials do you prefer? Is there an issue with -ahem- saliva?

Marv,

Neither is a wobbler.  One is the tilting piston valveless engine that saw a period of popularity on the Macbeth site...

(http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j234/mklotz/models/STEAM-AIR/TINY.jpg) (http://s81.photobucket.com/user/mklotz/media/models/STEAM-AIR/TINY.jpg.html)

and the other is a double-acting horizontal mill engine with piston valve...

(http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j234/mklotz/models/STEAM-AIR/breath.jpg) (http://s81.photobucket.com/user/mklotz/media/models/STEAM-AIR/breath.jpg.html)

Neither has needed a spit valve although, after too many years of smoking, I seldom run them for extended periods of time.  They can be run from a camera dust-blower bulb but people seem more impressed with the idea of an engine running off human power.

Nice one Jim.  I don't believe I ever saw one of those before.

BTW, for those of you that missed the show, here's a link to the New England Model Engineering Society website:

http://www.neme-s.org/2015/Cabin_Fever_2015/cabin_fever_expo_2.htm

Errol Groff has photodocumented NAMES and Cabin Fever shows for years.  I think he photographs every engine on display and it's the best way to see the exhibits.  I went to the CF show and missed several of the engines that Errol photographed.

Cheers,
Phil
