Title: Experiments with capitals for the S&P beam
Post by: tel on October 19, 2012, 09:21:38 AM
OK, despite sticking my face out and claiming the 30-06 case would be a good starting point, a quick look this morning didn't turn up any at all (though I know I have some) .... so, a minor change of plan - found heaps and heaps of 308W (7.62 NATO) so, for the first try we will use those.

Oops - a bit of resizing in order. Having problems with my photo hosting service - attachments for the time being I'm afraid.

Step 1; turn away the extractor groove in the bottom of the case and drill what is left of the flash hole out to 6mm.

Step 2; trim the case body down to 25mm length

Step 3; divide a portion of the case (20mm from the open end) into 8 more or less equal segmants

Step 4; cut these segment lines with a Dremel cut-off wheel

Step 5; gently flare out the segments with a pair of long nose pliers.

Step 6. The insert was turned (reasonable fit inside case) from a piece of 20mm square brass.

Step 7; ... and shoved into the case, seated home with an M6 bolt and nut.

Right way up! Ready for trimming and shaping of the 'petals' - gonna all be hand filing I suspect.

Watch this space.

A long way short of perfect, but on the right track, I think.

;D Well, getting somewhere near it. Now I need to try one with some decent set-ups for the cutting and shaping - that was just knocked out more or less freehand.

Looks really good. Interesting process and good use of a spent cartridge.

I don't see the pics in post 6 and 7.

Looks really interesting Tel.
Seems like with a profiled inner, the leaves would/could lay against it and look nearly 'embossed?' or as a single part. Thanks for showing.

Good thinking Carl - might try that for exp #2

Exp #2 has commenced. First, the recipe as before - turn and trim the case to length.

Second, dig this doohickey out of the drawer and set up the Dremel for a bit of controlled movenement.

Third, slit the case. This time I also managed to remove a bit of the excess material with a bit of manipulation. Now to knock up some sort of profiling tool.

OK, the body needs to be a bit shorter, the slots not quite as deep and a bit better shaping up of the 'leaves' but this is getting very close to a capital that I could live with.

Good stuff, Tel.  Makes me want to build a table engine of some kind.

Looks like you have a solution for the smaller engine :whoohoo:.

Next challenge: for the 1/6th there should be diamonds between each leaf :LittleDevil:.

My brain hurts when I even consider those diamonds. The only viable thing I have come up with so far is to shape the heads of shortened escutcheon pins and loctite 'em into drilled holes. However, that might not be possible with my #3 - which will be done in 4 pieces, rather than the 3 we have been using thus far.

BTW, these are roughly the size for the 1:6 jobby, with the .308 cases, for the 1:12 you would need to use something like .22rf and a fine slotting saw.

My supplier still has not come up with the cartridge cases to make these :ShakeHead:.If I am still in need when I get there I might try some tin brass tube. I have a nice 20 thou slitting saw ;)

 tel that is a nice idea for the capitals, i do not think it will take much with a small burr in the dremel and a little filing with some small file and you will have a good looking capital. looks real good.  jonesie
