Title: Rudy Kouhoupt Stirling Tractor
Post by: fcheslop on April 30, 2013, 10:30:56 PM
I'm starting a build of Mr Kouhoupts Stirling Tractor and wondering is there any known errors on the drawings .Iv never come across a build thread for one
I  had a bit of luck at that emporium of pain B&Q they have the right size material in stock for the chassis  so a start can be made.
Many thanks

Frazer, i have not built this engine so i can't comment from personal experience, but Rudy's plans have been printed and reprinted enough now that I have to believe they are welk vetted and should be error free.

I wouldn't go so far as to say there isn't any errors in his plans. When I built the Marine Steam engine there were errors that had never been corrected. I gather you are using the plans from the Shop Wisdom series? If you do find errors they will not be drastic. I was able to overcome the errors in my engine. So good luck Frazer and I will tag along for the ride.

Hi, Dave,Bill and Don many thanks.
A build log what with pictures and every thing ??? I will try my best but I'm not a machinist so if you see anything wrong please point it out.It will be a slow build as she is been fitted in with Victoria and a couple of boiler builds plus what ever else this scatter brain gets side tracked with and then there's that evil work.
I have made a good start today not many pics though and at the moment I'm cursing photobucket :censored: :censored:
Oh and yes the tractor is in Mr Kouhoupts Shop Wisdom Vol 3.
cheers and best wishes

Hi, just a little update.
The chassis rails and spacer were cut to size and I used M3 bolts .How does the American thread system work I have a conversion chart but what is say a 2-56 I think its about 8BA but what do the numbers actually do
(http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/frazerheslop/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/tractor1001_zpscad7acdf.jpg) (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/frazerheslop/media/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/tractor1001_zpscad7acdf.jpg.html)
Not very exciting. Then onto the front frame this was done simply by setting the X and Y stops on the mill
(http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/frazerheslop/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/tractor1004_zps75dd6269.jpg) (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/frazerheslop/media/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/tractor1004_zps75dd6269.jpg.html)
I have not drilled all the holes in the chassis as I dont know if I am making the standard gears and Im thinking about using ball bearings depending on what I can find in the swag box

Time for a tidy up and a little more to do on Victoria

I will be following along also.  That chassis looks like 16" long or there about.  Do you a a picture of the finished model?  I tried to search on the internet for a photo but could only find links to the steam tractor and not the sterling tractor.  Are they the same thing?

IIRC 2-56 is the thread used on D-connecters, not sure though

I don't think there's any significance in the numbers, just a designation like 2BA etc.

I don't think there's any significance in the numbers, just a designation like 2BA etc.

Unlike most of the squirrely notations, there is a significance.  The OD is given by:

OD = 0.060 + 0.013 * N

where N is the screw number.  Thus a 2-56 has an OD of 0.060 + 0.026 = 0.086".  The "56" is, of course, the pitch in threads/inch.

Incidentally, that BA number has a significance too.  From my notes...

Full series runs from 0 to 22.
Thread angle = 47.5 deg.
Crest and root radii = 0.18p (p=pitch)
Pitches are calculated as p(mm) = 0.9^n (n=number of thread in BA series)
Diameters are calculated as D(mm) = 6p^1.2

Frazer, this will be very interesting. The boat is gorgeous. Is Victoria a kit? (Although I'm sure you could make one from scratch).

Thanks Marv, it's very useful to know that, UN is common here. In fact, it seems that we have far too many thread systems in common use here.

As long as I'm explaining things, allow me to address one of my pet peeves...

It's StIrling, like the city in Scotland, not StErling as in silver.  The cleric's name was Robert Stirling.

Sorry Marv I don't know why Iv done that to Mr Stirling I should have known better.
Thanks for the pics  Don
Hi Hugh, Victoria is scratch built from the plans available at MY Hobby Store she was designed by Basil Harley but and a big but for me at least she is a little small and I'm struggling to fit every thing into her and the cab detail has ended up out of scale I wish I had built Duncan a larger version from Kingston mouldings.I bought a hull moulding from my Hobby Store for her but it was so poor I sent it back and made the hull plank on frame
Thanks for the input gentlemen and please keep me right no offence will be taken
If possible can anyone tell me how to modify the header?? to the correct spelling.
cheers

Thanks Allen just hope I do it credit,
The scrap box revealed a couple of nice 6mmx10mm ball bearing so the axle boxes have been made to take these I'm hoping it may reduce friction but to be honest have no idea
(http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/frazerheslop/tractor2001_zps528d241a.jpg) (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/frazerheslop/media/tractor2001_zps528d241a.jpg.html)
So after a bit of procrastination a start was made and the lump of scrap alloy chiseled down into a block.A pic of my mentor
(http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/frazerheslop/davessterling014_zps826e1641.jpg) (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/frazerheslop/media/davessterling014_zps826e1641.jpg.html)
I don't have any fancy kit so just use a fag paper and a bit of ground bar for edge finding but its lasted 30years or so
I set out the position of the bearing hole and simply center drilled it
(http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/frazerheslop/tractor2002_zps5a640891.jpg) (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/frazerheslop/media/tractor2002_zps5a640891.jpg.html)
Then it was time to bore the housing so onto the lathe and changed the chuck. We all use a chuck board
(http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/frazerheslop/tractor2003_zpsc8a1807d.jpg) (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/frazerheslop/media/tractor2003_zpsc8a1807d.jpg.html)
The job was set up by eye then clocked in using a spring loaded centre
(http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/frazerheslop/tractor2004_zpsc556e55a.jpg) (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/frazerheslop/media/tractor2004_zpsc556e55a.jpg.html)
Then bored to 10mm you are going to have to forgive me as I'm terrible for mixing and matching measuring systems to use what I have or that should be scrounged
(http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/frazerheslop/tractor2005_zps60214c14.jpg) (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/frazerheslop/media/tractor2005_zps60214c14.jpg.html)
The parts were parted of I have bored to full depth and press fitted the seat in I could have used a D bit or simply bored to the bearing depth but this was the easiest way for me
I simply measured the bearing block then machined the spacer plus 1thou just so the wheels wont rub on the block
(http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/frazerheslop/tractor2008_zps012276d6.jpg) (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/frazerheslop/media/tractor2008_zps012276d6.jpg.html)
So at least I now have a chassis with the rear axle bearings
(http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/frazerheslop/tractor2010_zpsed5b55cc.jpg) (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/frazerheslop/media/tractor2010_zpsed5b55cc.jpg.html)

(http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/frazerheslop/tractor2009_zps3db88d26.jpg) (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/frazerheslop/media/tractor2009_zps3db88d26.jpg.html)
Then onto the front stub axles I have decided to use some bearings from the swag box for the front wheels and fit threaded king pins so a little mod to the stub axles to allow for a thread but at the moment I cannot think of a nicer shape for them
(http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/frazerheslop/tractor2011_zps2912be09.jpg) (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/frazerheslop/media/tractor2011_zps2912be09.jpg.html)

(http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/frazerheslop/tractor2012_zpsf2a1b2f2.jpg) (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/frazerheslop/media/tractor2012_zpsf2a1b2f2.jpg.html)
Well that's about it from me .Works getting the way of play time at the moment
Thanks again for the interest shown in this little build
Cheers for the tea Dave
best wishes

Hi Frazer, looks like you are off to a good start. I want to build this one one day, so I am very interested in you outcome.
By the way is that one of G.H.T.'s small boring bar you were using? I have been looking at them in his book and thinking of making them. Does it work OK?

Hi Don, The boring bars are fantastic Iv used them for about 15 years .They could do with remaking now but they are well worth the time I also made the large one in the book . All I can say is I'm chuffed to bits with them and been a tight wads they cost soooo little

I'm watching with interest.

As to your edge finding technique, I have purchased and tried various kinds of fancy 'kit', and yours is the one I've happily settled on.
I have both a 1/2" and 3/8" ground rod, as those are the sizes of collet I'm generally using in the mill.

When I'm trying to be super-accurate, I rotate the spindle 180 degrees, approach again, and split the difference to eliminate any possible runout
(A fancy DRO does somewhat simplify that refinement to the technique).

Hi Hugh, I don't know the gent in the picture but he always reminds me of a grizzly old so and so I started serving my time with and but don't tell anyone a gentleman on this forum but I daren't name him for fear of litigation or reprisal and when things go wrong hes watching me.I know I need to get out more
The flange plate is for a 3inch multi tube boiler I'm building for a shop boiler initially but it will go into a future boat build. When I made my scale model of Bat I was able to draw up SL Elizabeth and came across an idea for remote starting a double acting single so the build can go ahead as I didn't want to fit a twin to her. That's a while away yet as Victoria and a couple of very simple toy steam boats are on the books as the two grandsons are becoming interested and as you can see by the plan they submitted
Nothing done today had go to work
kind regards

Hi
Not a lot done but any progress at the moment is  good thing I'm on punishment duties (D.I.Y)
The steering arms on the original drawings are simply held in by pins  with split pins to retain them and the coupling arm between the arms is a simple strap I'm not criticising the plans but that I simply didn't like the look of them it may come back and bite me in the backside we will see
I reamed the holes 3/32 and made king pins up .Then measured the distance between the arms as there is no saying my tractor will match the designers
(http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/frazerheslop/tractor3001_zpsa46a8c82.jpg) (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/frazerheslop/media/tractor3001_zpsa46a8c82.jpg.html)
Once the dimension was found I started hacking the arm out
(http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/frazerheslop/tractor3002_zps75f39d80.jpg) (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/frazerheslop/media/tractor3002_zps75f39d80.jpg.html)
The link was then cut off the stock remembering to allow for the bit that holds the cutter to the arbor :facepalm2: hence that rather nice groove in the vice oh :censored: :censored: :censored:

The forked ends formed after cutting of and using our old friends the filing buttons

I think that looks a little tidier and it allows for the missing steering linkages

The centres roughed out and then onto the shaping machine to form the spokes
The centers were simply eye balled up for an interference fit as I don't have an internal mike big enough.I just put a slight chamfer on the edge when I didn't see it that was my fit mmmm I know rough arse engineering .

The rims were then heated up just enough so water bounced of and the spokes fitted guess I'm just a jammy beggar :lolb:

The hubs are next up but Im waiting for the bearings to finsh them as the swag box has let me down guess Im going to have to get a proper job again :mischief:
short break as Iv locked up again what do ya mean I should be locked up
Title: Re: Rudy Kouhoupt Stirling Tractor

The hubs are now glued in and the wheels will be trued up once the bearing are here
(http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/frazerheslop/Stirlingtractorboiler016_zps31c137a3.jpg) (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/frazerheslop/media/Stirlingtractorboiler016_zps31c137a3.jpg.html)
Now instead of twiddling my thumbs just thought I would slap my 3inch boiler together
The flange plates are kept in position with a couple of 3/32 rivets they will be flushed once the boiler is together. The rivets are there to stop that horrible moment when just as the solder flows the plates move :facepalm:as tey did on my Clayton boiler
(http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/frazerheslop/Stirlingtractorboiler017_zpsc9775a77.jpg) (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/frazerheslop/media/Stirlingtractorboiler017_zpsc9775a77.jpg.html)
I like to form the solder into rings as it saves me from waving the stick of solder like a one handed fan dancer and getting solder every where
The big heat ready to start
(http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/frazerheslop/Stirlingtractorboiler018_zps98c48093.jpg) (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/frazerheslop/media/Stirlingtractorboiler018_zps98c48093.jpg.html)

Not looking so pretty now. I decided to do one end at a time normally I would just flip it over but there's nothing like a change

The other end ready to go with a bit of flux slapped onto the bushes just in case they should decide to remelt
(http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/frazerheslop/Stirlingtractorboiler020_zps99319010.jpg) (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/frazerheslop/media/Stirlingtractorboiler020_zps99319010.jpg.html)

After a quick clean up the bushes are then fully tapped out using a little grease to try and catch some of the swarf

Do I infer that the shaping machine is a completely manual affair? If so, good operator! Nice stuff, Frazer. Any work on the grandsons' boat?

Thanks Nick
Oh come on David me quite :lolb:. i only sleep about 4 hours so have to do some thing or other :lolb:
Hi Hugh, Iv bought some time on the grandsons boat build I bought him a poppop boat and a baby bath so he is one happy bunny for now
Yep the filling machine is a manual one .In another life I was taught to use files and we had to be within 2thou without the use of a micrometer .We had to split the marks on an engineers rule or it was the punishment duties usually crossing out wheels or the last one I did the frames for a Cathedral clock I used a gross of blades on that one
I like using hand tools and often find its a lot quicker and for me and  more accurate as I can never work out how to do tapered spokes correctly . The wheel centres from start to finish only took about an hour and for me at least it would have taken a lot longer to set up and mill them.

Sorry for the confusion Arnold, I do tend to bounce from one build to another and there's others that I dare not include as one has been ongoing at least 10 years . I tend to build several at once then as funds or scrounging allows they move forward. This one should be reasonably quick or that maybe famous last words

Thanks again for the interest shown
The wheels had been left 15 thou over size to allow them to be cleaned up .The centers were fitted then bored 8mm for the bearings I'm not tooled up for the metric system but been a tight wads I am using metric sized bearing as they are a bit cheaper
The wheels are retained on the axle with is it E clips they are called ? This involved turning Rudys original spindle around
(http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/frazerheslop/stirlingtractorwheels001_zpsc36b130b.jpg) (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/frazerheslop/media/stirlingtractorwheels001_zpsc36b130b.jpg.html)

(http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/frazerheslop/stirlingtractorwheels002_zpsefb0cb55.jpg) (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/frazerheslop/media/stirlingtractorwheels002_zpsefb0cb55.jpg.html)

I didn't like the look of the clips been on show so decided to make some little hub caps . The brass bar was bored to a push fit on the wheels. Then a mandrel made to a wring fit and the caps turned to shape
(http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/frazerheslop/stirlingtractorwheels005_zpsf939e8e8.jpg) (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/frazerheslop/media/stirlingtractorwheels005_zpsf939e8e8.jpg.html)

(http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/frazerheslop/stirlingtractorwheels008_zps056b0201.jpg) (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/frazerheslop/media/stirlingtractorwheels008_zps056b0201.jpg.html)
I just think it looks a bit tidier although on the original design you would have only seen the retaining screws.
The engine bearing blocks have been made and again fitted with ball bearings instead of just running in the alloy. I believe  had cheap miniature bearing been available at the time Rudy designed her he would have used them in his build.
So as per that old song Iv got two wheels on my wagon but she ain't rolling along yet

Thanks again.
Just a little update.Iv lost a lot of pics on photo bucket I simply cannot get my thick head around the new site
The flywheel was turned up from a bit of cast iron
You will have to forgive me as the build is totally out of sequence as I simply dont have the materials at the moment and it will be a few weeks before I can get my grubby hands on whats needed
(http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/frazerheslop/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/sterlingAAAA001_zps5f3658ab.jpg) (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/frazerheslop/media/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/sterlingAAAA001_zps5f3658ab.jpg.html)
A simple tool makers reamer was made to ream the flywheel center to size then of to the hack saw machine
(http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/frazerheslop/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/sterlingAAAA003_zpsf6561c0e.jpg) (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/frazerheslop/media/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/sterlingAAAA003_zpsf6561c0e.jpg.html)

(http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/frazerheslop/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/sterlingAAAA004_zpsf0200c41.jpg) (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/frazerheslop/media/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/sterlingAAAA004_zpsf0200c41.jpg.html)
After cleaning up the flywheel the gear selector block was milled up and again Iv fitted ball bearings
(http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/frazerheslop/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/sterlingAAAA007_zpsc7308232.jpg) (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/frazerheslop/media/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/sterlingAAAA007_zpsc7308232.jpg.html)
Next up the gas/fuel tank again I didnt have the sizes specified but have used 22mm domestic copper pipe. This allowed me to use a couple of end feed fittings and saved having to spin them up but first they needed shortening
(http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/frazerheslop/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/sterlingAAAA009_zps3764b93d.jpg) (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/frazerheslop/media/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/sterlingAAAA009_zps3764b93d.jpg.html)
(http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/frazerheslop/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/sterlingAAAA010_zps8c00515e.jpg) (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/frazerheslop/media/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/sterlingAAAA010_zps8c00515e.jpg.html)

All the parts to make the tank and now masked up ready to hard solder using 620 degre C solder
The masking may look over the top but it saves me from getting the stuff every where and should make a neat job
The solder rings are formed and this also saves me from using too much solder I just hate to see big blobs of the stuff all over the place.
The big heat up
(http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/frazerheslop/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/sterlingAAAA011_zps68e2f388.jpg) (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/frazerheslop/media/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/sterlingAAAA011_zps68e2f388.jpg.html)
Then a quick clean up
(http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/frazerheslop/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/sterlingAAAA011_zps68e2f388.jpg) (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/frazerheslop/media/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/sterlingAAAA011_zps68e2f388.jpg.html)
The joints look almost tidy
A group shot and thats about it other than a little diversion :Jester:
(http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/frazerheslop/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/sterlingAAAA015_zps63a674dd.jpg) (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/frazerheslop/media/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/sterlingAAAA015_zps63a674dd.jpg.html)
a little job on this old watch that had been dropped I only do the odd one and this fits in nicely as it has a stop mech built into it.
(http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/frazerheslop/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/sterlingAAAA017_zps2f17a269.jpg) (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/frazerheslop/media/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/sterlingAAAA017_zps2f17a269.jpg.html)

It reads Watch makers to the late Queen Victoria and the silvers marks that are visible date it to about 1910

PS. The brass hub caps are a nice touch.

Many thanks for the interest I'm sorry that I don't put a lot of info into it but just don't know exactly what is required and I have so many problems uploading and saving on this p.c it keeps locking up and when I select a pic the wrong on ones appear. I just wish I knew more about them.
Hi Bill,The balance wheel has now been repaired and it now just needs a complete strip and clean. The movement is just a cheap 15 jeweled one from the early 1900s the watch retailed for about £5.
Sir John Bennett was one of the first English watch makers to use mass produced Swiss movements in English watches.
I dont do many watches as I prefer clocks due to the size of the parts and having fingers like cows teets
Kindest regards

Frazer,
Would a softer, lower temperature solder have been as good? I wouldn't expect much pressure or temperature in a fuel tank.
I   this build.
Alan
Title: Re: Rudy Kouhoupt Stirling Tractor
Post by: fcheslop on June 06, 2013, 09:11:01 PM
Hi Alan, A lower temp solder would be OK I just tend to use the higher temp stuff as its a lot stronger .I am a little confused by the book as Rudy mentions silver soldering and I'm not certain as to what grades he is referring as there is often confusion either side of the pond
The fuel tank as you say wont get too hot and there's a vent so there will be no pressure.
It comes down to what I'm comfortable with I guess and I  copper bashing and silver soldering
Good luck with the exams Marinus
Thanks

Hi, just a little update,
The water tank was the next part just more of the same
An old bit of copper drain pipe was cleaned up and a scrap of ally used as a bung to turn it up
(http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/frazerheslop/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/sterlingtractordasboat001_zps926b31c2.jpg) (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/frazerheslop/media/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/sterlingtractordasboat001_zps926b31c2.jpg.html)
Then the base was cut with the jewellers saw I used to double mark out and found it helped to guide me when I first used this saw many years ago They are a great little bit of kit but buy good blades
(http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/frazerheslop/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/sterlingtractordasboat009_zpsd1fd5c61.jpg) (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/frazerheslop/media/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/sterlingtractordasboat009_zpsd1fd5c61.jpg.html)
Then another hard soldering session
(http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/frazerheslop/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/sterlingtractordasboat007_zpsdc2fc2bd.jpg) (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/frazerheslop/media/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/sterlingtractordasboat007_zpsdc2fc2bd.jpg.html)
A group shot and managed to swag a bit of ally pipe for the rear wheel
(http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/frazerheslop/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/sterlingtractordasboat012_zpsee914bce.jpg) (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/frazerheslop/media/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/sterlingtractordasboat012_zpsee914bce.jpg.html)
The pipe was parted into the two rims.I then decided to alter the rear wheels a little just to make them a little like traction engine wheels well ish
(http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/frazerheslop/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/sterlingtractordasboat014_zps15c9f743.jpg) (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/frazerheslop/media/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/sterlingtractordasboat014_zps15c9f743.jpg.html)

then four bits of 1/32 plate are turned to make the blanks
(http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/frazerheslop/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/sterlingtractordasboat023_zps2075b867.jpg) (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/frazerheslop/media/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/sterlingtractordasboat023_zps2075b867.jpg.html)
These are then milled and sawn to produce the spokes
(http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/frazerheslop/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/sterlingtractordasboat026_zps450d8bdf.jpg) (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/frazerheslop/media/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/sterlingtractordasboat026_zps450d8bdf.jpg.html)

That is such lovely work, Frazer. I can imagine that the grandson just walks into a magical land when he comes to your place. I think the plans for that little boat are on the John- Tom site, a putt putt? I hope we see the finished product.

Many thanks for the interest shown in this build
Hi David, ssshhh play time what play time :Lol:Its still going downhill at the moment although my head is now above water just counting the cost
Thanks Hugh, the put put is on the Duckworks site under Bathtub Steamer I cannot find it on John Tom. I'm trying to make our little get togethers magical or at least interesting and I'm drawing up a couple of boats for him to build pretty simple. The next one will be a wobble in a four plank hull about 30 inches long then onto a single acting slide valve if the interest is still there. They will be straight runners.
Hi Don, I'm glad you like her  and no probs upto now. Oh yes full of question only prob is I don't always have the answers.
Managed a few hours today.
Ooopps guess who reamed the flywheel the wrong size 6mm instead of 5mm so nothing for it but bush it out and bore the hole to the correct size

Then onto the crank this has been altered to take ball bearings for the big ends.

Not alot but any progress is good news at the mo
Hi Alan, the rivets are blind and simply a light ish hammer in fit and some glue. The central rivet on each spoke is actually a blind headed 11BA bolt.I turned them up and nearly parted right through so they snapped of the stock when full home.
Hope that helps

It has been a while since I posted on this build but play time is in short supply at the moment.Sorry
I have a runner  but not with out a few problems :wallbang:
(http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/frazerheslop/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/th_rudystractorblazer004_zpsfc06f42f.jpg) (http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/frazerheslop/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/rudystractorblazer004_zpsfc06f42f.mp4)
A start was made on the main engine build making the displacer . I decided to make it in two parts instead of the three as shown in the drawings its just on joint less to leak and I didn't have any tubing
Just a simple boring job using a fixed steady
(http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/frazerheslop/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/stirlingtractorandmods015_zps47840b96.jpg) (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/frazerheslop/media/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/stirlingtractorandmods015_zps47840b96.jpg.html)
The end cap was then made and counter bored just to save a little wieght
(http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/frazerheslop/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/stirlingtractorandmods018_zps5e0d8ec5.jpg) (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/frazerheslop/media/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/stirlingtractorandmods018_zps5e0d8ec5.jpg.html)
Then the two parts pressed together to make the displacer. I simply don't know do these displacer need to be air tight or not as some designs have a small vent hole drilled into them .I seem to remember that they did but must be wrong.
The hot end was then made exactly as per the book although I had to use some different stainless tubing so altered the rear cooling chambers plate this also enabled me to make a thicker spigot for the gasket to seal onto.
(http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/frazerheslop/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/stirlingtractorandmods026_zps6c2f5a4e.jpg) (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/frazerheslop/media/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/stirlingtractorandmods026_zps6c2f5a4e.jpg.html)
The engine cylinder mounting plate was next and the power cylinder was simple bored and lapped
(http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/frazerheslop/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/stirlingtractorandmods014_zps49548d24.jpg) (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/frazerheslop/media/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/stirlingtractorandmods014_zps49548d24.jpg.html)

The engine build up began and this is when alarm bells started ringing.I had a message from an American(thanks Gill) collector who owns three of these engines and he mentioned that on two of them the mains were badly worn and wobbled I simply thought they had been poorly made :wallbang:

The hot end is held by the front plate and Rudy simply says spot through for the hole I know theres no way I can do it that way and the holes line up so  a little button was turned up to locate the two parts and allow me at least to drill the holes some where near.
(http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/frazerheslop/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/stirlingtractorandmods007_zps9b44b521.jpg) (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/frazerheslop/media/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/stirlingtractorandmods007_zps9b44b521.jpg.html)

The engine was then built and I found that when it ran the mains wobbled all over the place :wallbang: After many strip downs and remeasuring it was the same and could not find any reason other than the mains are rather tall and the engines base was only 1/8.
If I deliberatly made an air leak on the displacer the problem disappeared :wallbang:So a new engine base plate was made from 5mm alloy and machined to fit into the chassis rails to keep the deck height the same as there a gear train to mesh.
the first run with the new base and she no longer wobbles her main bearings about
(http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/frazerheslop/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/stirlingtractorandmods011_zpsfad6ba2c.jpg) (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/frazerheslop/media/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/stirlingtractorandmods011_zpsfad6ba2c.jpg.html)

Many thanks for the kind comments
I am rather nervous about posting as I rely heavily on spell checkers and simply don't have a great ability communicating via these forums.
Hugh the engine is 7/16 bore and stroke. The cylinder was fabricated and made to the S T dimensions. The Standard was again fabricated using the Reeves Popular design and the two married together. The boiler is a simple pot type with two 1/4 water tubes all copper construction and tested swp 25 psi
I tend to assume people know what I'm gabbling on about with old steam plants as Iv collected and restored them for many years
So here's a couple of pics of the plant and toy boat from 1929 I have some of the original ST drawings from this period as they threw them out and I was a lucky guy

Don't worry about you communicating skills, just let the work you do shine though thats all we care about.

I am dyslexic and take a long time to get it down in print , give me a pad and pencil and it will take the whole pad just to get a short note, quote from my english teacher ( when I was not getting the cane for bad spelling ) was " his work would be OK if I could understand the foreign language he rights in )

like you the OS born spell checker is a god send

Frazer, you are the most welcome of posters, don't worry a bit about how it comes out.
That's a great collection of boats and engines. What diameter boiler do you use for that engine, I presume that it's double acting?

Many thanks for the kindness it is greatly appreciated.
I think I'm just going through a bad time  so you will have to forgive me .
Hi David, just thought Id sneak that engine build in :lolb: Theres more hidden in the bench  and the weather is cooling so theres three little boilers and boats  to build and a couple of slightly larger ones about 2 1/2 dia with ten water tubes just need to do the calcs and work out how many stays they will need
Hi Hugh, The engine is a double acting one and the boiler is 42mm dia.
No models done today just made some T nuts and started making some clamps to mount the rotary vertically so I can cut the gears but need to make a simple tailstock next.
Just not sure how to do the set up as in getting the rotary table aligned with the tailstock I'm trying to make it an easy tear down and build up sort of thing.
Hi Stuart, I often went home with my hands burning as well and I am hearing impared so used to get the cane for not listening  :censored:
It takes me hours to tripe a simple message
Thank you all very much .

Hi again,
The gears are next to be made but I also needed to make a tailstock and some clamps and also a cutter holder.
The tailstock is only a simple lump of alloy but don't believe the height given in the spec sheet for the HV4 rotary table

Have you had any thoughts about why a small vent removed the wobble from the main bearings?
Alan

Title: Re: Rudy Kouhoupt Stirling Tractor
Post by: fcheslop on October 12, 2013, 06:16:02 PM
Hi Allan, what eventually cured the main bearing wobble. I remade the engine base plate using 5mm alloy .This stiffened the engine up enough to stop the wobble.I think what was happening was when the engine started to compress the frame was twisting the air leak simply was stopping this from happening.

Impressive Stirling power there!  Yes, I am a fan of René.  I have spoken with him a few times.  I love his designs too, very different.  He also wrote Heilu X a couple years back and it features two of his engines, his most common that Huib Visser made popular on YouTube and the same in Ringbom version.

I am pretty well studied on the hot air engines - it's my primary modeling interest.  I really like seeing other people showing interest as well.  Seeing your tractor build and knowing what it will pull is very exciting to me!  Great work on that!

I hope to see you build another tractor!  At least a Stirling any way!

Hi Jeremy, I am a fan of Rene's work but cannot read German and find it a little difficult at times as I'm sure there is some good additional info in his books.
Do you know where I may find some info on his HR37 I have seen a heavily moded one on U tube by Mr Visser and it does really interest me.
Like you I enjoy building hot air engines. This tractor will be the only one although Iv seen a cracking car that used a simple cone drive mech for fore/reverse and would really like to build a Stirling boat :insane:
cheers

Post by: jwcnc1911 on October 13, 2013, 03:19:01 AM
Yes Frazer, the book, Heißluftmotoren 10 has about a page of info on HR37.  Huib notes in his video that the drawings are in the book but they are not - I have the buch.  Talking to Huib actually convinced me to buy the book.  As a side note, the modeling community is full of friendly people and I rarely meet some one unwilling to exchange emails.  While the book does not have the drawings, it's worth much more than it costs.  I'd buy another one if something happened to this one.

It has the same bore/stroke (quite a few others too) as the two engines (HR25 and HR27) featured in the book.  The work piston is 12mm with 5mm stroke and the displacer is 11.9mm with just a fuzz under 5mm stroke (if you do the math on the linkage).

In my opinion, Huib's engine really looks nicer and simpler than René's engine.  I think Mr. Visser freestyled it on that build.

I have every intention to build HR27 after I finish one of my current projects.  Be sure to email me if you don't do a build log, I think the tractor is awesome and am very interested to see your next project.

Thanks Karl
Thanks Jeremy I just received that book yesterday but was tooo busy playing with the tractor.I can see there's a pic of HF35 in the book and just need to beg a favour to get a rough translation of the page to see  what he is saying about it. The HR27 is my next build just to get a feel for the design then HR35. I think I will definatly alter the way the test tube is fitted and use Daves idea or the do it the same way I did when I built Daves stirling.
Thanks to all
best wishes

Hi Marinus , still a long way to go before the paint and as the winter is coming Iv a few boilers to build and a few boats to build including a very simple marine plant or two and then theres Victoria so once the baked potato oven thing for the front end is made and the gear selector she will be put away till the spring.
How are youre toys coming on

You are always busy with projects Frazer! Just how many thing have you built
My toys are on a standstill right now :embarassed: I ordered some LG 2 gunmetal rods for the bushings and some copper sheet and copper rod. Andries Keyser has cut out the cylinders, steam chest and the expansion links.

Hi Frazer.
Can't add more, to what has already been said, by everyone........  :)

Love it!     And, the way it dealt with the pallet, shows it's power output!  :o

Just concentrate on keeping the right side of Sue.......  ;)

Many thanks gentlemen, There still a bit to do and its crying out for something to pull just not sure yet I do like Rudy's cement mixer :LittleDevil:.Once the smoke box and gear selector are made she will be put to one side for now as I'm itching to build a couple of Stirling's and some simple boats steam of course and I want Victoria in the water next year.
I have to admit when it climbed the pallet I was very surprised I had put it there to stop it. I thought it would have stalled.
At the end of the build I will list the mods and all the ball bearings used and a couple of suggestions as like all builds hindsight is a wonderful thing. Not that there has been any problems with the drawings
Just wasted a night trying to form the box for the smoke box so its on to plan B and that will need another 40 rivets its surprising how  many this model has used nearly 200.
Hi Dave, its a shame Rudy has passed away I would have liked to met the gentleman and admire his designs as they can be built as he designed them or embellished and his Case is on the books
best wishes

Many thanks angeloscuro and sorry for the slow reply
Not a lot done with the tractor as I still have not managed to get my grubby hands on the materials for the fire box
The gear selector has been made so a little progress

After the last little post I ran the engine and suddenly a whining noise a bit like our lasses purse opening and the main bearings had gone west Oh bu*** or words to that effect.I had been informed that a problem existed on the engines bearing and had also found the frame twisting when running :ShakeHead:
A new main bearing frame has been made and now has four bearings and has improved her running.
The fire box was next to be made and once fitted she ran like a dog and stunk to high heaven :ShakeHead:.
This was cured by drilling more air holes and at the same time I split it so it can be removed without taking the front end to bits.
So other than painting  her sheis finished :whoohoo: :whoohoo:
So onto the mods
1 all axles are running on ball bearings
2 the dead space has been drastically reduced and gives the engine a bit more umphhh
3 the fire box now has extra air holes
4 the power piston has been lightened
5 the big ends are also now running on ball bearings
6 the engine bed is now made from 5mm alloy instead of 1/8
The modified main bearing block is a lot longer than designed and also help to stiffen the chassis
(http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/frazerheslop/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/tractorfinished009_zps3ab109aa.jpg) (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/frazerheslop/media/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/tractorfinished009_zps3ab109aa.jpg.html)
Just to show the mods to the power piston
(http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/frazerheslop/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/tractorfinished008_zps837783d7.jpg) (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/frazerheslop/media/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/tractorfinished008_zps837783d7.jpg.html)
The fire box mods
(http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/frazerheslop/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/tractorfinished004_zpscceffe14.jpg) (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/frazerheslop/media/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/tractorfinished004_zpscceffe14.jpg.html)
The finished engine. She just needs a coat of paint well oneday
(http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/frazerheslop/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/tractorfinished003_zps97420c33.jpg) (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/frazerheslop/media/arrow/Sterling%20Tractor/tractorfinished003_zps97420c33.jpg.html)
On reflection further mod would be to reduce the gear cut outs as they are far to long as designed
I have not found any errors in the drawings.
Thanks to all for the replies it does help although I know im guilty of not doing so Im rather shy
cheers and all the best for the new year

Frazer
Is there any chance of seeing photos of the build? I know this  is a very old thread so I will not feel bad if no response.
