Everything is moving along, I-75 is still a mess from Detroit south to around the exit area.

Make sure any one coming to the show check with the MDOT web site for construction added to more roads this spring. Since the state coughed up some extra money, the barrels are sprouting up all over.

Hi,
Any problems coming from Ohio to the show ?

I decided to fly rather than drive again this year, so no large models to display.  I'll probably just bring the Coventry again as a token since it's transportable in a carry-on and will run unattended while I wander around.  I'm going to fly in on Thursday to have a bit of tourist time.

Check the Mdot site before you come up  nothing at this time is shown but that can change in a blink of an eye.

PTsideshow,
Do we need to make some arrangements with you to set aside a group of tables for MEM members who want to sit together? Sshire has sort of coordinated things the last few years, but he's not around  here much lately.

Do we need a sort of count of folks who want to sit in a MEM area, and how much space they expect they'll need?

You will need to know about how many tables you might need and the best thing is to contact davezimmerman@comcast.net  he can set it up. I will tell him if the weather holds and I can make it to tomorrows meeting

ok, could everybody that wants to sit with the group post here with an estimate of how much space you might need? I know I need a half-table at most, and I figure gldavision can easily fill a table. I PM'd Stan to see if he's coming and will be sitting with us.

Hello,

Never shown models before, so I guess 1/2 table would be good. Bringing 4 or 5 and won't need air since I won't be running any. Hotel reservations made.
What do I do when arriving on Friday to get in ?

Thanks !

Brian,
On Friday, just walk right in and find us. After you get your stuff carried in and set up, you can mosey over to the registration table, sign up and pay entrance.

P.S. I heard from Stan and he won't make it this year. He's going to make it a bi-annual affair. I told him he'd be missed.

For those that are coming to the show next weekend. The weather is supposed to be better, no freezing rain like today and in the low to mid 50's and clear. And be sure to check the MDOT site for changes in construction status of the freeways as it some times seems it changes by the hour or at least daily. https://mdotnetpublic.state.mi.us/drive/

It's not a rule, but a feature. The display floor is literally a hockey rink.

A number of years ago, at the Southgate arena's  They had one rink up and one rink down 4 hours after the show closed and we cleared out they had a hockey tournament. If you never have had to spend the weekend walking and standing on mats on top of a working ice rink. Some people have been complaining about that for a long time even when we were at Seagate in Toledo. :cartwheel: that is why it is still put out that there is no ice.

my wife saw that on the flyer and asked why. I tried to sound smart and said we couldn't have ice around running steam engines, even though I know there's only compressed air... thanks for the real answer :)

Here's a pBase gallery of some photos I took on Saturday.  http://www.pbase.com/kvom/names_2018

The most interesting new model I saw there is of a ditch digging machine, used to install draining tiles in agricultural fields.  The original was owned by the builder's father, and the builder actually operated it as a teenager in the 1970s.  The machine is now sitting in a field awaiting restoration.

For the ditch machine, the scale was determined by the size of the smallest roller chain available.  Other than the chain, the builder made everything himself including all the nuts and bolts.  All of the control levers work as they did on the original.  Power is an electric motor concealed in the engine.

The red one is work in process;  it will have a hit&miss engine for power.

Jeff, had a look back at your posts but only found pictures of your Stuart No 1 partly built.  Any chance that you have photos of your beam and the Steam Hammer that you could put on the Forum?  As a builder of those two models and the No 1 also, I'd be most interested to see your own examples of these models.   Dave

Thanks for posting your photos Jeff, enjoyed seeing your fine examples of the Stuart models.  You have also done the "extras" on your steam hammer, I think that it makes an interesting and slightly different project.   Dave

I had an interesting chat with Clif Roemmich that may well change my approach to future models.  The first point he made is that on his large IC engine he used hydraulic tube as the cylinder liner.  This tube is honed on the inside, so taper in longer bores is not an issue.  If I had used this on the Joy engine I would have had a lot less trouble with bore taper.  I found a few sources online via Google search for 'Honed hydraulic Tube', and there's a vendor on Amazon that looks possible if the sizes fit.

The other point he made is that he now uses only powder coating and got rid of all hia point.  Even the "brickwork" on his bases is powercoat in brick color and pinstripe tape in the grout lines.  He said that the only issue was finding powder that melts at a temp lower than the soft solder he uses for piping.

Many thanks for the pictures chaps.     It's all very humbling.

I must try harder.

Great pictures and sad I missed it again this year; maybe next. I hear what you are saying Kirk, we should always be looking for the “nearest thing” to build our models from, yet, I think we shouldn’t look at the easiest way; or we would all be 3d printing engines. I think part of my enjoyment comes from that nice bore with no taper produced by me, and not purchased. Hell, PMR and several others have “mechanics kits” that are machined and ready for assembly: ain’t my cuppa tea. Just got a flyer today from some old boys that can  sell you a complete 1957 Chevy convertible ; you just gotta put it together. Now granted, all parts are new and alls you gotta do is screw everything together and paint it: . I guess my point is: you can pretty much screw together anything today, if you know where to “buy” the parts. Me; I like making them

Sorry for being slow loading my NAMES photos, but this week has been busy. I liked the way Tim posted his photos and will post them in batches.(http://listerengine.com/coppermine/albums/userpics/10019/DSCN7442.jpg)

I must admit the photos looked much better before I reduced them to 20% from 4000X3000 to 800X600. If someone has a suggestion for how to clear them up send it my way. I am using Fast Stone resizer.

Nice shots Art - really like that little travel trailer in the first one!

For the resizing, just looked up that Fast Stone tool, and saw on the screen capture that down in the lower right is an option that defaults to 'linear'. See if they have an option for 'bicubic' resize, that will do a better averaging job.

Chris,
Thanks for the help. I did set it to bicubic, there are a number of settings. Don't know what they all do? It does make a small improvement, at least the print is more visible. The guy that had the camper also had all the control line boats. Here are some more photos.

Two other ones to try on it are the BSpline filter and Lanczos filter (under the resize tab), might help somewhat. Given how far it is being downsampled, you are going to lose fine details, no helping that. One thing that can help sometimes is to crop the images first, take away background areas, so that the interesting bits (engines) are left as large as possible.

Chris,
I've been at this a while and need a break. Maybe I should have used the old 8 mega pixel camera. But I wouldn't want to keep them for my own use because I like looking at the detail. I will experiment with your suggestions later.

Hi Art

Thanks for the pictures!

I use IrfanView (it's free) to resize my pictures, it has a "sharpen after resize" tool that works pretty good. You can also do batch processing with it.

Dave,
I tried Irfan View and the photos are to big for the Coppermine site. I reduced them to 600X450 and they are still 126 KB, still to big. At 800X600 they were around 165'ish. What settings are you using? I do think they look much better, less fuzzy, but...

Some great shots of some great models - really like that second one, the side-by-side engines, assume it is a marine configuration? Also the Rasom Tree Feller is very nice!

Chris,
If I recall from years past, it's a triple expansion modeled from the Titanic? Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I like the Jemma 7 cylinder radial. I'd like to build it some day!

I think I'll post a few more. I will unabashedly advertise my own setup in the second photo. Doesn't seem like the best photo of my engines and stuff, but then again that's not what I see from the back side.
