Title: Model Engineers' Day at the Forncett Steam Museum - 1st October
Post by: The Idle Fellow on August 03, 2017, 03:07:20 PM
May I invite all MEM members within reach of South Norfolk to join us on Sunday 1st October. It should be worth the trip just to see Steam Guy Willy's wonderful Beeleigh Mill engine. However I'm confident that there will be the usual excellent and varied display of models from MEM members and others - including a road run for miniature traction engines.
You are welcome just as a visitor of course, but it would be even better if you'd like to exhibit something. Full details and entry forms from me at: billstarlingbs@gmail.com.
Details of the museum at: www.forncettsteammuseum.co.uk
Hope to see you there.
Bill.

G' day to you,

I just visited the museum website and the "Exhibit" page. Not only are all the steam engines beautiful and amazing but reading all about them is absolutely a delight.

Living in East Texas prevents me from visiting in person but I surely did enjoy the website tour.

Have a wonderful day,
Thomas

Looks like it would be a great excursion Bill. A bit far for me too but their website certainly is enticing!  Hope you will take lots of pictures to share with us on this side of the pond.

Dear Thomas and Bill,

Thanks for your kind comments. There are better photographers than I am amongst the MEM fellowship. (You know who you are!) I am hoping they will bring their cameras on 1st October.

All the best,

Bill.

I've been 'off line' for a bit and only just catching up.
Willy - we don't have a tripod, so please bring one if you have it available. (Off topic - I see you learned to sail at Brightlingsea. So did I! Ever come across the Ocean Youth Club?)
Deltatango - all the way from Melbourne? Wow. I know it's a great show, but I hope you're not coming all that way just to see us. Do say hello. I'll be wandering round wearing a badge saying 'Bill'.
In case you are hesitating to exhibit for the first time, although some of our regulars definitely produce work to 'exhibition standard', we like to see first attempts and work in progress too - it encourages the rest of us.
Thinking of our regular exhibitors, the entry forms for one or two of you seem to have got lost in the post (or the ether). Would you mind resending please, just to help my admin?
Hoping to see you there,
Bill.

Hi Bill,
I will definitely look out for you and other MEM members. The date of the Open Day influenced the timing of the trip but we have friends in and around Cambridge who we haven't seen for a couple of years and friends and family in other parts of the country to visit. I considered putting the Mastiff bits in my bag and showing those but the thought of trying to explain them to a suspicious security officer who had never heard of model engineering has put me off.
See you soon!

Hi Guys - it's been such a long time since I even looked in on here but a call from that well known 'lurcher' friend of mine, my old mate  'Modelsteam' this morning finally broke the reverie. He'd phoned to say he isn't able to make Forncett this year and told me about Bill's reminder on here.

So yes I will be there too - a bit late in getting my form in Sco but it's on it's way - spoke to Bill this morning so will be in the usual space  at the top of the stairs (just noticed you sent me a message in January Simon :o as yet unreplied to - oops :-[ -  my apologies indeed.

There's been little done this past year due mainly to the distraction of Sue being home every day now but I have at last discovered enough interest to progressed the Mc Onie a tad to a position of it able to run and made a couple of crankcases for two 5cc diesels - all mainly in the last few weeks. Believe it or not that new mill has even discovered it can make swarf  :o.

I'll look forwards to catching up with you all at Forncett and look forwards to meeting you too DT - hope you have an uneventful journey over here.

Regards - Ramon

Hi Ramon

Glad to hear from you again and that all is well

Since you're making engines and especially diesels again - any change of a build log here  :LittleAngel:

Best wishes

After a lot of dithering I've finally signed up for the Model Engineers Day. Exhibits wil be parts for my 4" scale SCC Burrell including gears, clack valves and progress so far on the governor. As well as spur, bevel and worm gears for the Burrell I've been experimenting with helical and internal gears, so I'll be showing examples of those too. There will also be some notes and examples of machining tungsten alloys - for the governor balls. Finally I'll have a laptop with machining videos of some of the more unusual techniques.

Note to deltatango: I live near Cambridge, so when you're in the Cambridge area feel free to drop in and talk workshop stuff.

Andrew

Fantastic day today at Forncett, the weather was a bit wet at times but spirits weren't dampened.  As usual it was great to catch up with fellow model engineers, look at all the museum exhibits and generally enjoy the laid back atmosphere.

Sorry but I didn't take any pictures - hopefully somebody more diligent will be along shortly,

Simon.

No I didn't either Simon I'm afraid - just spent the day talking and talking and talking and taaallllkkkk........ :D Really enjoyed our chats and catch up - great work on that Corrliss.

Despite the slightly dwindling numbers of exhibitors up stairs I felt it was one of the best for some time. Nice to see Willies engine in the flesh and running and to spend time with David - 'DeltaTango' who must have warranted the 'furthest travelled' accolade for many a year. Andrew put in a mega effort to get his heavy metal up (and down) the stairs and had a really informative display so with lots of interested public to chat to who turned out despite the poor weather I think it fair to say 'it wer a 'good 'un''

Had two really super 'on song' runs of one on the Eta engines plus a well bitten finger as a reminder of just what fun it is to get these out of their boxes once a year ::) I think this year was round about my twenty fifth year - looking forwards to quite a few more yet.

Regards - Ramon

Many thanks to Andrew, Simon, Bill, Willy and Ramon for the welcome and all the conversation yesterday at Forncett, I really enjoyed the day out. I took a few pictures but they will have to wait until either I work out how to move and resize them in my tablet or I get home next week.
The standard of the work on display was an inspiration, so thank you all for lugging heavy things up those stairs and enduring the steamy atmosphere all day.
The museum is, without question, the best live steam experience I've found anywhere. The Forncett staff have created a working museum that gets the balance between safety and accessibility just right.

Regards to all, DT

Thanks for the kind words guys. It only works if you turn up to exhibit or just visit.
Still hoping someone will post some pictures.
See you all next year, when I hope to be on your side of the table, having managed to find a 'volunteer' to run things.
Best wishes,
Bill.

OK, we're finally back in the land of Oz although still unsure what day of the week it is. I've now downsized a few of the pictures I took so here they are.

Andrew had lugged some heavy lumps of iron and steel up the stairs:

(https://ipy6xa-sn3301.files.1drv.com/y4mDNrfXWBP5KxOPNJ01bLIqq1IxBmKfFo8sufl16Z7FcpTsPLaatpIXvOOCu74kIrTGQ4ydMZ5kWNSBNBH-aRX5NHhXfGcJyMiOb2QpP9HWzQs8uFwrfWmVcUTMfsDd-HWu-2ChLzSZBFr3eYQEcS1xa8pYLN1wfEdlElcIlZRYBjLuvvdWGeziYjtvJ6OacowLV-yAc6rGEB67q1VJwMjaQ?width=480&height=640&cropmode=none)

Willy was busy talking:

(https://hvxvoq-sn3301.files.1drv.com/y4mZ3MSsx_31pJmE24pxDVGTgDFiPx2jF3Wor_eiMDv7DlZQHIZKt7xkdA2uJSVpoF6dWO28Wajrc_UM98aCdzMt1I6oDCtVcvTEC2TFuyQ4uJPBgy1v0SkwPi1hl4Z6sMrW0fkIMz-K0yiw9UjnmcQ0LKmiJ_AXBoic4jJ_brM5GZM2LL9iwJuIAXc9wSBsLf4xjgRmaHyBYqy2YPTZ7YojQ?width=480&height=640&cropmode=none)

but his star exhibit was the Beeleigh Mill Woolf Compound. Willy's jumper was all we could find to hide the messy background and you'll have to ask Willy about the temporary balance weight:

(https://hpxvoq-sn3301.files.1drv.com/y4mslgshKFaeGQNzrO_JuL2Oqt9RBgnqgghanyiLXKzUt1IvIb2J3ymsxgx25nvnHhFKt4vuIprJGJZyyFMGUjh8MBsxtCrXsHA5CmGZ_pSUOYMBdrBU-Cey2rs35SOOY_gcrHg6OXXJnvOHXgyYEjOw0Mfrmny7t0SjafMS0GD7wjx0TDCg_3cCc031zPSs7GHQ2T8kb2lX_QCaCx0eh6YoA?width=480&height=360&cropmode=none)

I did my best with the details but I really needed the macro lens to do them justice:

Ramon had a table full of brilliant workmanship:

(https://ivxvoq-sn3301.files.1drv.com/y4mEF5qVX1oSdWK23_1YgRH0yjSgmPeTlQVT9C-Jh1P5j4YriH6xLPiEcpx62adEun_CKB1tq2YfRKMmTkkbHX0iIMgPa9oJBLojcrjk5lBsQYlF5u4-wzsJZ5Suh2UmJ4R4yvU1tFChx3HITQxof_Y1Wp8UHpnlzVE4DwUME-C4hCvd4h61o0xw1gtK1_t5cIo2QNwY_0hmqaWCitOQOV8tQ?width=480&height=640&cropmode=none)

but it was the Southworth Engines Corliss that really caught my eye:

The outdoor aero engine demo went even thought Ramon did get a reminder that those things can bite:

Bill led off the traction engine parade:

but, just in case anyone wanted to argue with his red flag, they followed him up with 25 tons of Fowler ploughing engine:

and then some really beautiful large-scale models:

Hello David, good to hear you are back home safe and sound  :)

As always, it was nice to meet up with the old faces and this year a new one from MEM. As usual Bill did us proud - hope your 'replacement' does as well Bill.

Thanks for posting these pics - a super reminder of a really terrific 'Model Engineers Day Out'. I've been well out of active modelling for most of the last year but this has really fired up the old enthusiasm no end - who knows where that will lead.

I'll look forwards to seeing you there again sometime - perhaps as an exhibitor ?  - now that would be cool, definitely claiming the 'furthest travelled exhibitor award' without any fear of competition.

Really nice to meet you

Regards - Ramon

Hi, DT thanks for all these photos that you have posted !! I have quite a few that i will be posting and you have provide a few that i managed to miss !  I love the one of Bill Starling with the red flag on the bike, Perhaps an enterprising chap could provide a steam powered Bicycle !! but then would you still need an ordinary bike with a red flag in front of that !!! The lead weights on the flywheel was to get the engine over TDC to run on the air line btw. Glad you had a good trip and enjoyed the show......

Thanks very much for the pictures, David and Willy. They're great. Perhaps they'll inspire even more of you to join us next year.
I had a meeting at the Cambridge Museum of Technology on Saturday and found the prototype for Willy's model of the Headley beam engine - right foreground of Image 1480 above.
There are lots of pictures of this and the Beeleigh Mill engine on Google, but be warned - if you look for them you may end up spending a lot of time there.
Bill.

Whats that engine with the round base and flywheels up top, says Wickham Market on the base? Very interesting design, have not seen that before.

Thanks for all the photos, I like that Stuart No4 in the last photo with the added detail.

The horizontal flywheeled engine is one of Anthony Mount's designs. They are pullies on top but there is a flywheel in the base

I don't think Jo has castings for that one!
