Title: "Spring" tool holders
Post by: Arbalest on October 31, 2012, 11:44:47 AM
I'm hearing good things about this type of holder for thread cutting and parting tools. Anyone seen them available in the UK?

You'll have my PM but Sparey had drawings or a photo of one that he'd made in the Amateurs Lathe book.

It works on the principle of going in and out of cut. I got a set when I got my Zyto( Noah was about then) and I've sort of lost them. However, another set of drawings are in Ian Bradley's Shaping Machine and Lathe tool book. Mebbe out of print- to where I'm going  :mischief: :LittleAngel:

Note the clapper box on this shaper

http://www.lathes.co.uk/rapidelime/

Spring action is built-in and the tool tip is not too far forward of the clapper pivot, which I think Ian Bradley said helped to prevent dig-in.

I only found this because a Rapide-Lime is offered on Ebay this week.

I gave my old Bradley -the Shaping Machine away many years ago but I came across
http://www.neme-s.org/Shaper%20Books/
which will have the tools which we have been describing.

Lots more info there

Cheers
