Today worked out to be a good day to take my build of Kozo's New Shay outside for some photos and movies - got the last of the water piping/valves done and painted this morning. There are still some oil lines/etc to finish it up completely, but cosmetically it is compleete and able to run on air power, so figured it was a good time to post some pictures of it (full build thread is over in In Progress section). I started this project at the begining of last June - learned a ton of new skills during the making of it - definitely reccomend Kozo's books even if you are not going to build one of his locos, lots of great techniques in them.
Below are some photos of the engine out on the lawn, sitting on its display stand. Also some movies of it running - put blocks under the trucks to raise the wheels just off the rails so I could run it without it escaping down the street...!
Thanks to all who have followed along with this build, lending support and advice along the way - most appreciated!

Thanks guys! It was a lot of fun to build, learned a LOT of new skills along the way. If I had not retired a couple years ago, this would have taken a lot longer! A long cold winter helped too! With warm weather finally moving in the kayak and sailboat are getting a higher priority for a while.
Next projects: getting back to a plank on frame whaleboat model that I started a while back, have all the frames made, ready for keel and planking. Also working up plans for a gauge 1 switcher that will be a lot lighter and easy to move, butane fired single flue, 0-4-0.

Ah! Finally spotted the air hose in the last vid...I was wondering how you were powering it.
Chris, this has been a most enjoyable project to follow, memorable not only for what seemed to be the the speediest job this side of Schenectady, also for the quality. Thanks for letting us in on it, and I hope that the future projects will get a viewing here. Happy sailing, Hugh.

Yeah - had the compressor sitting over on the driveway so the noise would not get picked up too much by the camera... The grass hid most of it!

Wow, Chris! That is a work of art! Just beautiful!
Thanks for sharing it all with us!

Hi Chris, it is beautiful. Thank you very much for all the effort and time you have expended to show us all the work and details you have invested into this build.

Thank you very much for taking us along on this trip Chris.
I must admit that I haven't commented on your progress along the way - but it has been one of the most enjoyable projects to follow the last ten months or so here on this site :NotWorthy: and the most dependable to bring an update almost daily for all this time :cartwheel:
You should go :DrinkPint: while the rest of us are going to miss seeing more of this magnificent build ....
Please promise to bring us a report of the first steam up :whoohoo:
Best wishes

Just fantastic. Fantastic.
Well done. A beauty that no doubt provides a lot of inspiration to many...and me especially.
Thank you for a great thread.

Hi Crubey,
That's come out bloody brilliant!
Like others waiting for the first steam up.....you just can't beat that smell of steam, coal & oil! Now you just need to extend the track round the garden.......put in a water feature or two, river cannon & lake....vist the garden center clean them out of dwarf conifers & other suitable specimens, visit the local quarry & you will be able to play to your hearts content!.. :stir:
Cheers Kerrin

Wow. And less than a year to create. I'm simply amazed. You set a mighty high bar for quality AND build time!
Wow.

Not a whole lot of superlatives left for me Chris but the Shay has always been one of my favorite engines and you have done a magnificent job on yours. I enjoyed following along with your build as there aren't many locos on the forum.
Thanks,
gbritnell

Yowee! Just spectacular. Nothing left to say. Speechless

Thanks so much guys! I learned a whole lot of new skills on this project, at the start was feeling nervous about it but got lots of support and help from the forums, and just took it one piece at a time.
This summer I've gotten hooked up with some old railroading friends (some work on the real thing on a local line as well as models!) who have a local Gauge 1 group. I've taken a side track (yes, pun) and am putting some of the new skills to use on a little 0-4-0 switcher for 45mm track to run with them (going to set up a little loop at home too - that size layout/engine is a whole lot simpler/smaller/lighter to deal with, plus being butane fired with a single-firetube boiler it is a lot easier to make!). I'm making up plans as I go, and will come back and post more build pics with the plans a little later on. For now, below are a couple pics of the rolling chassis and boiler parts.
I am planning on being at the Coolspring show this month (not showing, just going to wander around drooling on the engines and taking lots of pictures - will be there thursday or friday, whichever has the best weather forecast...

That's looking good, and will probably be finished next week. I'm not at all surprised to find that you've been up to something. Keep it coming, Hugh.

Maybe the week after... ::)
This is prime sailing/kayaking/just-being-outside time of year, nowhere near as much shop time as the winter!

Wow. Thanks for pointing me here Chris.
I am really sorry I'd dropped off for a while. That is a beautiful model. Superb.
