Title: Breath Engines
Post by: Roger B on August 08, 2018, 05:58:22 PM
My middle granddaughter (10) has expressed an interest in engines. I'm not sure if it will last but I would like to encourage it. I seem to recall someone on here writing about breath powered engines (simple oscillators?  :headscratch:) If there is any form of design available would you be willing to share it?

Roger, you might check on the Thimble engine fron Liney machine here. https://www.minicastings.com/acatalog/Liney-Thimble--Plans--Liney_Thimble_Pl_DL.html#SID=57.
The plans are cheap and downloadable. It's not a wobbler but easy to build and mine will run on breath power.

There's this wobbler on Instructables...

Also, I've built the one Bill mentioned.  Mine also runs on breath power.  It's a very easy build, although might exceed the attention span of a ten year old.

For short attention spans a finger engine or even a turbine of some sort might keep them involved to completion.

most of the little steam engines would run on breath air, although sometime a good healthy breath (which I don't have) is useful...

That reminds of the 'Rocker Engine'. Same piston idea (and no valve).
I remember a bunch of us made it but I can't seem to find my plans.

It had to be fairly easy to build  ;D ...at the time I had only built two Elmer engines and I wasn't very good.  ;D

It's the same engine Zee. Yes I remember the frenzy too!! It's a neat little engine though. The term "rocker" I think came from the tilting action of the piston but they were knock offs of the Liney design.

Thank you for the suggestions    :) I will have a look at them and see how easy it will be to convert the US designs to metric  ::)
