Inspired by Hugh Currin I would like to try to build this engine, I have downloaded the plans & looking through them I should be build it with the a nudge in the right direction every now & then.
I need to buy the two gears as I have not got the equipment or knowledge yet to make. Does anyone know if these can be purchased in the UK? off the shelf!
The two gears listed are,
A 1B 2-N32048
A 1C 2-N32024

I assume thay are Boston gear refs for 32DP gears, 48 & 24T in which case you should be OK with HPC Gears or Moffit
Just enter DP and then 32 http://www.hpcgears.com/products/spur_gears.htm
Best check the boston ref to see if teh bore/width is OK, the HPC may need thinning or the bore adjusting
GMB Assoc are Boston gear agents in the UK if you want to use the same

thanks Jason, I found the 24t gear, that seems ok but couldnt see the brass 48t gear

I can't help with the gears, as I'm in the US. But I'm surprised I've inspired you before I've made any parts. Please keep me updated and note any problems you run into. Thanks.

Thank you Jasonb, HPC Gears are only 12 miles from me, so I will pop in next week and pick some up.

I have found the two gears needed for the build, but the drawing has the larger gear in BRASS, the other in in steel. I can get both gears in steel off the peg but they can make me one in brass at twice the price & a two week wait.
Do I need this gear in brass? what would the be drawback in two steel gears? if I have to I would shell out the £29 for one :'(

No problem using 2 steel gears. If I were making them myself (as I did for the Wyvern) then I would chose to make the larger gear out of brass simply because it's easier. You can get away with using a brass larger gear because there is twice as much wear on each tooth of the smaller steel gear. Possibly there is some advantage in having dissimilar metals in contact to reduce friction but I should imagine that the effect is marginal in this context.

I might be worth case hardening the small gear, or using a different grade of steel, or the large one from cast iron. Ian S C

For the small loads that are applied to the gear teeth on engines of this size there will be no appreciable wear on gears of the same material. Go with the steel and don't even worry about the wear.

I picked up my gears today, I also picked there catalogue on cd, I picked up two of these so if any one would like the spare copie just let me know.
I know most of you can cut there own, but I cant & might not be on my own :P
