There could not have been too many of these made as I have been unable to find reference anywhere on-line to a "Sherline 3" Precision Lathe".

IIRC the original Sherlines were in fact made in Australia and then bought out or liscensed to Sherline, Inc. here in the states. Suurprising how similar they still look though I also see some resemblances to the Unimat on that lathe, especiallt the motor mount, motor size and shape and the chuck also. Looks like a fine little machine though and congrats on getting it!!

Wow 8), I have just seen the speed range she must have impressive head bearings to be able to run at 4000 rpm at that age.
What thread is the nose?

Actually a pretty similar speed range as my vintage almost NOS Machinex 5 . the head on the machinex looks IIRC similar to the taige. 150 to 4000 rpm. I have the two headed monster the second head is a mill drill attachment drill yes mill likely not.

The plastic handles bust off of these due to closet and shipping wear. so mine was fitted with stepper motors and aluminum knobs.

Yep, this is an Aussie made Sherline.
The present day US made Sherline is very much the same dimensions and the headstock has the same arrangement of "magneto bearings".
This one has brass bed, brass saddle and brass cross slide. The base casting is aluminium, tail stock is aluminium.
This motor may be original, it is painted the same colour and looks like the motors on the earliest pictures I can find however it acts just like the sewing machine motor on my (even smaller) Adept lathe. i.e. revs like billoh or has no discernable torque. The lamp dimmer speed control only makes this lack of power worse. The first job will be to make a little layshaft.
It is a nice little toy to use and has an almost 'quality' feel to the feed controls.
The tail stock quil is munted and the drill chuck stuck on it looks oversize but I can attend to those details.

Jo, I have not tried to take the chuck off but I assume the spindle thread is the same as present day Sherline lathes, 3/4" 16 tpi..

John, as a colonist beginning machinist, I don't recognize the word "munted". If that's not a typo, could you give meaning to it?

Are they plain bearings or races in the headstock John?

The headstock bearings of a Sherline are 6004ZZ. The original headstock looks spot on to the to the later ones so my guess is the same bearings were used.
