Title: Chronic munted lathe acquisition syndrome?

There must be a name for this particular condition....

This is my Grayson lathe..

..which looks very nice in its blue paint.

But it is not quite perfect,  the top slide is something I made up, the T slots have damage and the cross slide is not so good.  Then I spied this..

Grayson, very much like an ML4 but with slight differences.

Another Grayson? Must have been a big seller over there. We see plenty of ML2/4 versions over here - Advance, Gregco as well as Myford - but I've never noticed a Grayson on eBay. Do you think you'll get it, or do you have it already? Don't you have something large and modern sitting on a lump of concrete?

That one doesn't have a countershaft, I wonder what the speed range is like.

Hi Hugh,  yes, I have a generic Chinese 12x36 (in American nomenclature) but it is always nice to have something smaller on hand.  The auction closes late tonight so I might take a look in later and see how the bidding is going, it is only 80 or so kms to collect which makes a nice day out!

Without the countershaft I expect it has been run far too fast and the head bushes may be well munted but fixing things like that is all part of the hobby, right?

I must say John that that peculiarly Kiwi expression 'munted' has found its way over here in a big way, our 17 year old boy using it as often as possible. I'm not sure his mother knows quite how to take it, but I guess that's the point. Hugh.

'Munted' became accepted in polite society when used in connection with the Christchurch earthquake.  I find it a most satisfactory expression!

BTW,  I dont think it originated in NZ.
