Title: Lathe magnifier
Post by: steamer on September 18, 2013, 05:49:11 PM
Was in a "lathe" kinda mood last night so I spent some time making up a magnifying glass holder for a really nice hand lense with a broken holder....I intend to put it on my indicator stand....I'll post pictures tonight...

What's everyone's favorite ways to hold lenses in cylindrical holders....fasteners or glue?........I'm torn.

Here's my indicator holder that quick mounts in the cross slide T slots....you get the idea I think

Ok here's the patient.

I picked up this 2" pocket magnifying glass somewhere in the distant past....and I've used it too....but the swing out holder attached to the nice leather pouch has always been broken...and I just know I'm going to drop it someday.

(http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u27/mcandrew1894/tooling/2013-09-18_18-27-40_42_zpsa7abe936.jpg) (http://s164.photobucket.com/user/mcandrew1894/media/tooling/2013-09-18_18-27-40_42_zpsa7abe936.jpg.html)

So here's the plan, I turned up a piece of brass tubing to the right OD/ID and turned a recess to drop the lens in.   You will notice the 5-40 threaded hole in the side...
I intend to put a 5-40 stud on the other end of my indicator stand arm so I can mount it there for when I need to see what is going on , on Samantha Bell, and then just spin it off and put it away in the pouch when not in use.   I figure the brass ring has got to protect it some if I drop it

Fits like a glove!

Now the question....do I make a ring to clamp the lens in?....or do I just glue it in with a dab of epoxy?

What do you guys ( and gals) think?

Dave I would glue it in with epoxy, it shouldn't go any where's. The other option is to cut a groove just above where the lens beds and use a piece of small spring wire to snap into the groove. This would lock it in place.

I suppose that would be the way Don!.....I bet I could face cut a groove and roll the brass over capturing the lens.....what could go wrong! :lolb:

Dave I would cut a groove for the epoxy to bite into and recess the lens below the groove.

Hi Dave

I did a quick job at work the other day that involved securing a filter into a holder for a microscope. The tech was looking for an O-ring to put in the bore to hold the filter in place; I looked at the parts he had in his had and said why don't we just do it the way the manufacture did. Which was a plastic sleeve pressed in the bore to hold the filter in place; he looks at me and says you can do that?

After checking the bore with a plug gage I turned a delrin sleeve that pressed in place; also parted off a couple extra ones for spares; he was a happy customer.

If you were going to do something like this the bore would probably need to be a bit deeper.

Thanks Dave

The lens isn't seated in the photo...I just rushed a few photo's to post.

I'll think about that sleeve idea....

Just need to glue the lens in and drill/tap the indicator arm....maybe tomorrow

Most camera good optics are in an internally threaded tube. A pair of externally threaded retaining rings trap the lens between them. This allows for adjustment of the lens element's position in the tube. The tubes used to be brass - now primarily plastic.

I think the most I would do is add to 0-80 screws to capture it....I have no heart to try a 2" -40 thread at the moment....I just want to use it ....my eyes aren't what they use to be, and I know I'm going to drop that lens sooner or later if I don't mount it.

I would be tempted to use silicone seal caulking. The clear stuff is used by aquarium manufacturers to glue and seal the glass plates making up the sides and bottoms. If you try this, make sure that things are really clean - Use liquid soap followed by something like isopropyl alcohol or acetone to make sure there is no oil or grease at all on the two parts.
The nice thing about the silicone caulk/glue is that you can undo everything with a #11 Exacto blade and a bit of elbow grease if you want to try something else. The other nice thing is that with some care you can probably shock isolate the lens from the holder.

Yo homeslice, what if you just drilled and tapped a couple of 2-56 holes in the outside face. Couple of screws with washers or a type of mini hold down will hold it against the recess you cut and if, by some misfortune, it needed replacing, just remove the screws.

Whiskey

Ps put a little felt on the back of washer or "hold down"

Samantha looks great with that stylish monocle, very refined. Hey, I have a sander that I think will get out all those "scratches" on that cross slide :lolb: :lolb: :stir:

Nicely done, sir!
Like it a lot and you can't beat the price. Any vibration carrying thru the long arm?
