Title: Print Stuff You Can Really Use And Have Fun Doing It
Post by: Troutsqueezer on October 20, 2016, 01:52:40 AM
I'm just getting started working my way printing things for all the tooling I have for my machines. I've recently moved and the equipment has come out of retirement as the new (smaller) shop slowly takes shape. The printer's been running all day for several weeks now. Pics attached.

That right there would be a good enough reason for me to buy a 3d printer!  :)

Damn!  Someone with worse OCD than I.

I've often made abortive attempts at making holders for everything (though not 3D printed).  I finally gave up because it makes it unappealing to buy a new tool.  What a lovely chisel!  I need (read want) one of those.  But my chisel rack is already full.  What to do?  Why, keep all the chisels in a big drawer where there's always room for one more.

Regardless, it looks great.  I congratulate you.

If I walk by a table and there's something with straight lines sitting on it but that object is not aligned such that its edges are parallel with the edge of the table, I must adjust it so that it sits properly in relation to the lines of the table. Would that be mild OCD or borderline insanity? If it's insanity then I have an excuse for many of the things I've done and said over the years.

Good to see you're around, Marv - and thanks.

Steamer - I wouldn't want to make holders for all that RC-related stuff you must have. I have a fair share myself and even I wasn't crazy enough to go there...

You're kidding; surely everybody does that, don't they?  It's only when you align the paper clips so they protrude from the magnetic holder the same distance that you have serious OCD.  Not that I do that, you understand.

This thread is becoming a rerun of 'Monk'.  Like the holders anyway.

LMAO!    RC stuff stays in the Pit Bag!     Otherwise I'll never have what I need...the bag is like 100 pounds!

I used to love that show!

However, I did notice on one episode that, although the books on the shelves were correctly ordered by size, within a given size group they weren't alphabetically ordered by author's surname.  Inexcusable!

That is a great job Dennis. I'm a bit OCD myself, but, I also have ADD and that means I never finish what I'm organizing. Well, that's my story anyway  8)

So, you DO sort the grains of salt in the shaker by size, and stack them neatly and evenly, I hope? ...

Are you kidding?  That would be just...weird.  Sheesh!

Besides, it would take up too much time, what with all the pepper sorting.

Wait a minute............acid brushes in the Razor Knife spot! After all that organization a serious error!

I think the whole thing is just fantastic. I bought a 3D printer a few months ago and the greatest thing is designing something and then printing it out. There are cool things to download from the net, but making something custom is very rewarding. The other neat thing is that if you do buy another tool that you didn't plan on originally you just modify the design of the holder and print another one.

Thank you for the inspiration to do some serious printing/organizing.

Nice, neat, clean.  Is there an index?  If you make a mistake and put a tool away in the wrong holder, is it any easier to find it again than if you just left it lying on the bench among all the other recently used tools (my favorite method)?

Rick, You have a sharp eye. I made the the razor knife holder to the wrong dimensions but realized it didn't have to go to waste. I do love to design as much as print (maybe more). I'm able to leverage quite a bit from my experience with AutoCAD using the Fusion 360 program.

Jerry, I do find myself scanning the wall for long periods of time looking for that thingamajiggy but there's a good chance that process helps to mitigate the advancement of Alzheimer's which I'm pretty sure is sneaking up on me.

My problem is I keep finding things that will/should improve the printer and trying to improve the print quality that I haven't worked on much of anything else.  Although I did print out the crescent wrench just to see if I could get the job done.  I wasn't happy with the finish - it worked so I guess it counts as a win.

Crueby - A pile for everything, everything in a pile...

I like your style.

I'd been waffling on 3d printing but this thread has renewed my interest. Loads of great ideas.

Nice to see you Trout. Great shop!

At the moment I am using my 3d printer to make the parts for another printer. I will be scavenging the mechanics and electronics from another, barely used, printer I am picking up.

It is a bit of a rush, to think of a part, design the part, and then print the part and use it, all in a couple of hours.

...

Has anyone made a "reextruder" so you can turn a mistake back into filament? That should take care of Marv's new chisel.

There seems to be a few home brew filament makers out there, there is one on Instructables, sounds as though all you need to do after you have built and tuned the machine is to chop up the required plastic to feed into the hopper, or use plastic beads.
I'm getting interested.

What kind of plastic did you use?

I had blue PLA in the printer and didn't feel like changing the spool to black.  I don't mind the smell of PLA while it's printing, the printer is in my living room so that's an important consideration.

My house is old and drafty so I'm going to avoid ABS since I've heard that it's touchy about drafts.  At least until I get really ambitious and decide to build a heated cabinet for the printer.

Just found this thread and reading it has cheered up a bad day. After you've finished sorting the pepper Marv,  I could do with some help sorting the cornflakes to make the picture on the front of the box.. :Jester:  :DrinkPint:     John
