Title: Fabricating a flywheel
Post by: gary hart on April 07, 2014, 03:41:54 AM
Hope these pictures explain.   Had the bronze ring on hand and thought would try making a flywheel from it.
Drilled ID of rim.
A ball end mill was used to groove the two hubs halves.
Spokes given about 2 degree taper.
Hub halves and spokes at hub silver soldered (brazed)
Trued up on faceplate and hub bored and reamed.
Some sanding and buffing.

It took me a while to figure out what was going on in the first photo, then I saw that you're using a right-angle doohickey to drill from the inside. That's a neat way to keep the outer rim flawless

Gary you are always thinking out side of the box.

That is beautiful; do you have a project to use it on?

Wow!

I could've used that.

Beautiful flywheel.

Had that right angle drive and thought it would be good idea to make a tool holder for it.  Not as good as it seems, believe this was made for thin aircraft work (Boeing surplus).  The bearing behind bit holder has some wobble which I think was meant for self aligning when drilling thin stuff and save on bending drills.   Next time will drill from outside and plug the holes.

Dave & Zee thanks for the kind words.   Dave just recently seen (maybe here) a Ericsson Solar engine with YouTube.   Looking at the video and have just finished a Rider-Ericsson engine realized it is the same engine and linkage.  So built the flywheel.   Darn, don't look right so have to save this flywheel for another project but will use the same method for the new flywheel.

That's a beautiful piece of work and a clever method, well done.

Am I right in thinking that the spokes are held in the rim by virtue of the taper on them being "wedged" in the parallel holes?

Jim the spoke is straight and slip fit in the rim.  There is a small ridge where the taper stopped just before meeting the straight portion.
The spoke has adjustment in and out so pushing into meet the taper would work also.   Think the straight portion is needed to make the hub self centering.

Grand job that Gary.   I hope you enjoy polishing more than I do, it could not have been too easy polishing around those spokes. I love the end results of polishing but hate seeing all my small parts flung up the workshop when I loose my grip on them.

Cheers Dek. :old:

Beautiful job!!! What did you use to get rid of all the discoloration before you started to polish it. Did you immerse it in some kind of pickling agent, if so what was it and how long was it submerged?--Or did you just polish all the discoloration away?---Brian

I've posted this on a few of my build logs. To remove the "pink" color, 2 parts hydrogen peroxide to 3 parts vinegar. A 10-15 minute soak removes the pink color from soldered brass

Thanks Stan--I will try that the next time I silver solder some brass.---Brian
