Title: SNOW !!
Post by: 10KPete on February 10, 2019, 02:22:21 AM
We had our first sticking snow on Friday and it was a good one. There is about a foot on the ground and more in the drifts! The pictures were taken earlier, on Friday....

Sorry Pete,
To late to run out and photograph the "evidence" but while we were on vacation in PA. we had over a foot. Since then I cleaned the drive then we had sleet and freezing rain. Then it went below freezing where salt doesn't clear the ice. I have to admit though that the white stuff took till just before Christmas to come to south central Wisconsin.

Yup, I'm a bit more north from you Pete, so we've had snow since Tuesday (about 8") and 2" Friday, then 4 more last night - we've got a foot of accumulation.  Getting tired of shovelling the driveway, so just made two strips for the old beater Corolla (still chained up for snow driving lessons with the youngest son) and off to work this AM.  Supposed to get more today/tonight, and who knows the rest of the week.

I am just one state to the East of you Pete and we have had snow for a while.  I think about 18" total, but with drifts and piles from plowing, it adds up.  Grateful for floor heating in the shop. Stay safe.

Hello Pete,

Plumb and Pear trees down here are full of white blooms and most all of the Oak trees in my yard are covered with new buds, Spring is just around the corner now  :whoohoo:. It hurts my ole bones to see all that snow, stay indoors and stay warm.

Have a great warm day,
Thomas

Snow came and stayed in November here. We haven't had a lot of snow, probably only about 12" on the ground, but when it comes and stays in mid November instead of mid December it makes for a long winter.---Brian

Pete,
Down here near Salem, OR we had a trace..now long gone. Your welcome to keep all the snow up there. Sounds like new records set.

Hello.
We have had some snow here, but only for two days.
Sad that it all melted away on the second day within hours.

Well, it's not over. There is more on the way and touted to carry even more snow.

Records? I think a few have been busted...

We're still seeing about 4-6 inches but it turned soft today. Temp is still at freezing but not by much!

None of the old folks around here remember anything like this.

Lived here 54 years, worst its ever been for the lowlands (well, except the stuff didn't freeze last night at least).  We got another foot Monday night, and it was too much for the Corolla to plow through, so dug the driveway out for the wife's Sequoia (4wd)...and then called a snow day after helping the neighbor dig out his Tacoma pickup, it got high centered on the snow berms in the center of the road.  The stuff that fell yesterday was like concrete, wet and heavy.  Took 3 hours to shovel the drive, and that is just two clear ruts for the wheels.  Waited through yesterday and last night for some of it to melt, then (barely) made it through about 3/4 mile of rutted slush and packed ice to the plowed highway this morning.  FWD manual transmission Corolla with Spike Spiders on the drive wheels - probably the best vehicle for snow I've ever owned.  Though I forgot to bring the wife's mail with me, oops.  A neighbor had the snow slide off his roof and take out the gutters, and falling tree limbs have been taking down power lines, but so far (knock wood) we have only had the power flicker a few times.  The house looks like a ski lodge, the snow banks in the driveway are about 3 ft. high with shoveled snow.  And my XC ski boots bit the dust last year, and I forgot to order new ones...no way is an Amazon driver coming down our road now  ;D.

Hello Bent,

This should make you feel a bit better, I'm in my shop with the front door and one window open and even thought about turning on a fan. Hopefully it will cool down a little..... :stickpoke: sorry old friend.

Have a great day,
Thomas

Snow, then freezing rain, then rain and now a day later it is freezing again with some snow. Makes for treacherous driving!
Generally St Catharines is in a good-weather bubble, surrounded by the bad weather in Buffalo and Toronto so we geet off lucky.

You could be in Scotland, where things are bad :-) https://www.facebook.com/BBCCymruWales/videos/1825878114189270/

Now thats funny!
Reminds me of the Weather Channel reporter out doing a live field story on one of the hurricanes last year, making a big deal about how windy it was, could barely stand, but if you looked in the background you ccould see people strolling by on the sidewalk in shorts and t shirts, having a nice day out...

Thomas - Hahahaha....will save some snow, and send you a care package, say around late August.  It goes well with a bit of bourbon or scotch!

In case anybody thinks Seattle takes itself seriously, here is a local blogger's posts we've been sharing (I skipped several listings that just had local humor in them, I ain't got the time to explain Howard Schulz to y'all).   Still, some explanations are probably necessary...

- In the second image - PCC is a local organic food co-op, where everything costs about twice what the non-organic stuff does.
- in the 4th image, "the 5" refers to interstate highway 5, the main route through town.

I live NNW 40 miles from Seatattle and that fellow is exaggerating only a bit. It was better this year than a few years ago when 4" of snow shut the whole place down! No one was ready, especially the road crews.

This year was better without the major roadways being shut. They had the plows and plans ready. :slap:

The blog is really funny! :lolb:

Pete, don't forget they did shut down I-90 for several days...but mostly because that's the hiway that idiots without chains try and go over, leading to muli-car pileups.  The higher passes stayed open...

We DO get lots of snow here in Rochester, records are up in the 160 inch range for a year (more common is 75 to 100), but we never have that much on the ground at once! Worst we usually get is about 3 feet in a blizzard with lake-effect snow off Ontario or Erie, but even that is not common. Difference here is that it does not hang around long, most of the winter we alternate several days of cold with several just above freezing, so a lot of it melts off again. Most of the time we only have up to a foot or so on the ground - nothing like Minnesota or up in the mountains, where they need doors on the upper floors of the houses! That storm in 78, others like it every decade or so, can dump a lot here but nothing like that picture of the truck!
