Title: cast brass nameplate repair
Post by: scc on May 14, 2017, 08:48:22 PM
Hi all,  I have a cast brass nameplate that needs repair. Many years ago it had a hexagon shape cut out of it to clear a bolt head (approx 1.5 inch af)
I have made a brass insert and wonder what advice there is to soft solder it in.  I cannot risk damaging the plate.
Any advice would be appreciated.              Terry

Is any of the plate painted or enameled? If not, gets easier. if painted than you need to control the heat better. For soft solder, the temperature is low enough that there is little risk to the metal. Another option would be to glue in the insert with jb weld epoxy, no heating at all and it grips metal well.

thanks..... there is some paint but full repaint happening anyway.     Never thought about jb weld.  I will weigh it all up.Thank you again.     I was concerned about distortion but you have put me right on that one.
