Time for another, orphan rebuild session!
This, distressed non runner. A Seig HAE 03/ Grizzly H8104, arrived last September.........
http://madmodder.net/index.php/topic,7625.msg81675.html#msg81675
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/After%202012/PembridgeHotAirEngine9712002.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/After%202012/PembridgeHotAirEngine9712002.jpg.html)
I pulled it out of the orphanage a couple of days ago.
Couldn't think what to call it. A pal suggested Metisse.
As it will be a bit of a mongrel, by the time it's done. I thought, that will fit nicely!
Apologies to any bike men out there who were hoping for a different project. I don't think the Rickman Brothers should be too concerned!
It's been mangled together, by a bad tempered gorilla. Nothing is in line/ square. Even the factory installed displacer bush is leaning!
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/P1030676_zpsb40e7601.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/P1030676_zpsb40e7601.jpg.html)
The cooling fins had been jammed on at half mast. Then someone has tried to "unscrew" them. Breaking the swaged joint......
A few days soaking in WD40, allowed the ring to be pulled off. Giving access to the displacer, cylinder flange screws.
The square flange would spin, like a ball bearing.......
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/P1030669_zps0fc4a16c.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/P1030669_zps0fc4a16c.jpg.html)
M5 screw, to drive the flange. Plus a digging in tool.........
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/P1030677_zps3b24e3c8.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/P1030677_zps3b24e3c8.jpg.html)
Came apart nicely........
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/P1030678_zpsbb4bf19c.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/P1030678_zpsbb4bf19c.jpg.html)
Silver soldered........
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/P1030680_zpsc9bfd950.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/P1030680_zpsc9bfd950.jpg.html)
Thanks for the dip n dab, fluxing tip Jo! ;) Wicked through, nicely.......
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/P1030681_zpsb378532c.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/P1030681_zpsb378532c.jpg.html)
A 3 thou' flick across the face. Near enough........
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/P1030682_zpsccc07279.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/P1030682_zpsccc07279.jpg.html)
That's the first bit, straight and square.......
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/P1030683_zps2a6cc27e.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/P1030683_zps2a6cc27e.jpg.html)
Shouldn't take too much to sort..... Mebbe!

Hey I had a Stuart beam with similair properties: nothing was machined square on that either :-\.
Nice to see another orphan being loved
Jo
-
It's already looking better David. It should make a fine display model once restored too.
Bill
-
Can't find it at the moment, but one of the lads on the Model Engineer web site built one of these a year or so ago, I think some of the drawings for it are on the thread. Ian S C
-
Well done! Should be a beauty now that it's in the right hands.
What is Jo's dip n dab technique? I'm hoping it refers to soldering and not one of her suitors.
Best
Stan
-
Mr Drillin', where do all these orphans come from? Mr Bumble would be quite envious, although they seem to do much better in your hands than his.
Cheers, Hugh.
-
Nice start on the reconstruction Dave, should make a nice addition to you ophan shelf.
Don
-
What is Jo's dip n dab technique? I'm hoping it refers to soldering and not one of her suitors.
"One of" :lolb: I haven't caught one in decades: They run too fast for me
Jo
-
Jo.
I've had several orphans like that! The worst was the recently, (almost) finished, Robinson.
I usually manage to balance one cock eyed part, against another. Few people seem to notice....... :embarassed:
Plenty more orphans awaiting their turn. ;)
Bill.
Thanks for that!
Unfortunately, no engine display shelves in Mrs. Drillin's house..... :(
Ian.
Unfortunately, that's another site I don't frequent, often. I'm not a model engineer......
A link would be much appreciated, if you ever come across it again.
Stan.
Thanks for that!
Dip n dab?
Jo's recent tip, to wet only the solder area with water. Then the flux powder will adhere, only where it's wanted. It works too! :praise2:
Don.
Thanks!
Please read my reply to Bill. :-\
David D
-
Good start David.
Metisse... what a lovely name for an engine, and as you mentioned, very apt ;)
Kind regards, Arnold
-
Thanks Arnold!
Hugh.
Sometimes I also wonder just how they get here! (http://smileys.on-my-web.com/repository/Thinking/thinking-021.gif)
We had our annual steam up/ charity meet, at the end of May.
At home time. Engines safely in the car, I returned to dismantle my cleared table.
This was abandoned, on the table! :o Couldn't leave it. I had to bring it home........
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/P1030687_zpsf30c3b5a.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/P1030687_zpsf30c3b5a.jpg.html)
Also. Not really an orphan. This has recently arrived from Australia.......
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/P1030689_zpsed34dd88.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/P1030689_zpsed34dd88.jpg.html)
A couple of years back, I posted some pics of the inmates, on Modder.......... http://madmodder.net/index.php/topic,6150.msg65089.html#msg65089
There's always room at this orphanage....... :)
David D

Hey Stll, my great grand maw ran a boarding house in the deep South ( in the base town of the 101st Airborne ) during the Depression and WWII and she taught all her kids to never turn down the needy and wanting. Glad to see you're doing the same.
Eric
-
Hi Eric.
I guess the phrase, (with apologies to Dr Barnado), is 'No Destitute Engine Ever Refused Admission'. ;)
Pressed out the lop sided displacer bearing.......
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/P1030673_zps90165d34.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/P1030673_zps90165d34.jpg.html)
Made another, with a couple of thou' hole clearance and larger, 12mm dia base.
Held in with sleevelock, it should stand square.......
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/P1030685_zps5f872f69.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/P1030685_zps5f872f69.jpg.html)
Also a new shaft, as the bent original had also been chewed with pliers. :facepalm2:
The main bearings had been hammered in........
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/P1030670_zps988d3fd2.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/P1030670_zps988d3fd2.jpg.html)
So, I drilled 'em out.
Then opened out the holes to take 9mm o/d ball races.......
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/P1030684_zps96f66548.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/P1030684_zps96f66548.jpg.html)
Didn't have a 9mm reamer. So, I triple drilled to size. Finally, using my 9mm "brass" drill.
The bearings are a beautiful sliding fit! Two, in each frame.
Got to tackle the crank, next........
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/P1030672_zps66e89e96.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/P1030672_zps66e89e96.jpg.html)
Thanks for watching........
David D

Hi David, nice start on the orphan
By any chance is there a nameplate on the base
BODGE IT AND SCARPER INC
cheers
-
Still with you David...you are making some rapid progress on this one too. Looking great.
Bill
-
Frazer.
I think they wish to remain anonymous. Frankly, I wouldn't blame them! ::)
Bill.
Thanks for that! I only wish I had more time/ opportunity, to have more shop time....... :'(
During a quick look at the crank assembly, I thought they had used a roll pin, for the crankpin!
Then I realised, the crack, (inclusion?), continued along the shaft too! :o
With the lop sided big end eye. (See last pic). We need a full rebuild.......
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/P1030691_zps153ff2b5.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/P1030691_zps153ff2b5.jpg.html)
Tried to use the original throws. But couldn't get them into alignment........
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/P1030698_zps8cbd46ce.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/P1030698_zps8cbd46ce.jpg.html)
Made a pair of new ones.........
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/P1030699_zps5a338147.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/P1030699_zps5a338147.jpg.html)
I don't do filing too successfully. Prefer to mill, where possible.
This is the set up for the r/t. M4 caphead and nuts, plus 4mm silver steel shaft.........
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/P1030700_zpsb886a887.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/P1030700_zpsb886a887.jpg.html)
Grip on the nuts. Drive via the shaft........
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/P1030701_zps64d25a57.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/P1030701_zps64d25a57.jpg.html)
Swap around for t'other end.........

A spot or two of loctite, and it went together nicely, ready for reaming.........
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/P1030709_zps2df5ec7a.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/P1030709_zps2df5ec7a.jpg.html)

Wonder if I should have made balanced cranks? We'll see!
All ready now. For clean up, lick of paint, and rebuild, next week.......

Looks ok, I think.........
I'll see that and raise you a "Wowza!"
A great improvement well done.
Tim
-
Looks ok, ok Hell. Still, great work mate . The "Destitute Engines" deserve love also. Seems you are doing a commendable job.
Whiskey
-
Hi marra thats looking canny. :DrinkPint:
cheers me duck
-
Tim. Whiskey, Frazer.
Thanks Fellas!
Well...... Not such a happy chappie, today. ::)
I've got a big (ish) day tomorrow. So, I assembled the finished engine. Hoping to have a new toy....... :)
Put a temporary light under.......
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/P1030721_zpse7aa1c83.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/P1030721_zpse7aa1c83.jpg.html)
And NOWT happened!
After 20 mins, the whole engine was hot.
No attempt at running. Just a couple more rotations, in the correct direction. Compared to the wrong direction.
So, I let it cool, and fitted a temporary heat shield.........
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/P1030726_zps5f52d34b.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/P1030726_zps5f52d34b.jpg.html)
That made no difference!
The assembly was "neat", rather than sloppy. Probably needs some slop.
So, I pushed out the double bearings. Replaced with single, to allow some crankshaft wriggle........
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/P1030725_zps564d0a8b.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/P1030725_zps564d0a8b.jpg.html)
Faced all square. Polished the cylinder bore..........
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/P1030722_zpsfe6ff031.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/P1030722_zpsfe6ff031.jpg.html)
No difference! :cussing:
Detaching the power piston big end, proves the displacer section will spin freely........
So...... The problem is with the power piston.
I eased the piston o/d. No difference!
So...... I hit it with my little blowlamp!!! THAT, made it run, for a few seconds. Then it stopped......... :headscratch:
Thinking calmly....... >:(
Who in their right mind, makes a cylinder from a section of copper pipe. And fits an alloy piston? (http://serve.mysmiley.net/mad/mad0270.gif) (http://www.mysmiley.net)
Unless, someone knows differently? :-\
David D
-
You will get there :wallbang:eventually
Congratulations on the big day ya old beggar :lolb:
cheers ducks
-
Are you thinking that the alloy piston is expanding to a solid fit in the cylinder?
Hope the big day goes well, whatever it may be!
Hugh.
-
Frazer.
Thanks Marra!
Not too sure how I feel about today...... O:-)
Hugh.
I think the two metals are galling together. But in a very underpowered way.
I don't think extruded copper water pipe makes a suitable engine cylinder.
Thanks for the wishes. It's just another, but significant, birthday..... ::)
David D
-
Many happy returns, Mr Drillin'.
-
Happy birthday David  I hope someone made you a nice birthday cake (I will have to make my own next weekend :disappointed:)
I wonder would there be enough candles to run one of your engines :LittleDevil: ?
Jo
-
Happy Birthday Dave, I am still following along and enjoying your work.
Don
-
Brass will make a passable cylinder, steel better, cast iron best. A cast iron piston is the way to go. The piston should slide through the open cylinder under its own weight, and when the cylinder is blocked, it should almost come to a stop, ie., move very slowly. It's a good idea to put 3 or 4 shallow, narrow grooves in the skirt of the piston, these form a labyrinth seal, the piston may be run dry, or with a very light oil. Copper and aluminium, no, friction too high. Anodised, or Tercite(? Teflon coating) is OK for aluminium, but copper is not really a metal for this sort of use. Ian S C
-
Hi David, hope the day went well .Many happy returns
Jo, enough candles to power loads of engines :mischief: :mischief: and good wishes for your big day
cheers
-
Hugh.
Thank you!
I've had a nice little day. Spent with my immediate family. Lunch in my favourite pub, and lots of good wishes from friends on my favourite forums.
I'm happy with that! :)
Jo.
Mrs. Drillin baked me one of her fruitcakes. She's had over 40 years practice. I still love 'em, (and her).......
One birthday, the cake had 50, lit candles!! :o I blew 'em out, with one breath. ;D
But, that was 20 years ago....... Today, she didn't like to risk the fire hazard, or me having a heart attack.........
Hope you have a good day, and a nice cake too. ;)
David D
-
Don, Frazer.
Thank you very much, Fellas!
I've had a good day. Looking forward to resuming frustrations tomorrow........ :wallbang:
Ian.
Thanks for that! They are my thoughts too.......
But I'm coming around to the idea, this is another engine, where the displacer/ piston ratio is too small.
Both at 16mm dia. With 22mm x 12mm strokes.
Seems we might need a smaller diameter power piston! ::)
David D
-
No available shop time, this morning.......
But. A quick calculation, gives a displacement ratio of 1.834. Not a lot, in my opinion. :headscratch:
Sleeving the cylinder bore, to give 14mm dia, gives 2.394.
Think I'll give it a go. Unless anyone else has any ideas?
David D
-
David D, There are a couple of threads on this engine in the Model Engineer web site, they are "Interpreting drawing", and "Hot air Engine", both by Cornish Jack, I don't know (yet)if he got his going. Ian S C
-
Thanks Ian.
I found one of them. But, he hadn't got a runner at that point, had he?
I roughed the cylinder sleeve o/d, to just over, size - 2 thou'.
Drilled out 13mm. Then bored carefully, until I had a finish I was happy with.
Around .540" bore.........
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/P1030735_zps275ee577.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/P1030735_zps275ee577.jpg.html)
Topped the o/d. Until the cylinder would push on.
Then, polished it with the Scotchbrite pad........
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/P1030734_zps698349c7.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/P1030734_zps698349c7.jpg.html)
THAT, was when I noticed the flange was loose on the cylinder!
Another assault with the digging in tool. Another soldering session. :wallbang: :wallbang:
Soft solder, this time.........
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/P1030729_zps620a5c81.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/P1030729_zps620a5c81.jpg.html)
Looks ok, I think........
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/P1030738_zps05ce4eac.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/P1030738_zps05ce4eac.jpg.html)
Slidelocked, honed and assembled. Before owt else goes wrong........
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/P1030744_zpsfe991013.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/P1030744_zpsfe991013.jpg.html)
Made a piston blank. Plus .010 on the o/d.
Made a fixture, with M3 screw thread.........
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/P1030739_zps4f94fea2.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/P1030739_zps4f94fea2.jpg.html)
Finish turned the piston blank. Polished the final resistance marks away with Scotchbrite........
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/P1030742_zps550a4c1d.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/P1030742_zps550a4c1d.jpg.html)
And....... Assembled it.
Oiled, where necessary.
And lit a temporary burner.
And waited.
For about 20 seconds.
And.............
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/P1030752_zps2bbc38ed.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/P1030752_zps2bbc38ed.jpg.html)
Oh.......... HAPPY DAY! :whoohoo: :cartwheel:
That's another little engine, doing what it's supposed to do.........
Thanks for watching!
David D
-
Nice one David.
Vince
-
Nice work Dave are we going to see a video?
Don
-
I hadn't checked in in a while David...but a beautiful result for sure. Thanks for sharing the restoration here.
Bill
-
Vince, Don , Bill.
Thanks for your replies, and taking an interest.
It's not over, just yet. Parts are rather loose, to eliminate any doubts over friction areas.
I think I will fit brass main bearings, which will allow the crank to centralise better.
Also, I have to source/ make a burner.
Then..... We'll have a video! ;)
Thanks for watching!
-
Great to see that your perseverance paid off and what once was a lump on the shelf is now a display runner. Nicely done.

Jim.
Thank you!
Final assembly.....
I decided to re install the twin ball races, but with a 3mm wide spacer between.
This will give a wider bearing in each frame, and a boss, to position the outer wheels.........
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/P1030755_zps96453892.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/P1030755_zps96453892.jpg.html)
Fired up. Away she went, for 30 secs. Then ground to a halt! This happened several times.......
I finally realised, the crankshaft was insisting on migrating to the left, until it was too far out of alignment! :wallbang:
So, I faced a spacer to give a .01" x 5mm dia step. (Inner race diameter). So, no rubbing during contact/ crank positioning.
This worked, sort of!
Nowt else for it. Bossed spacers, each side of the bearings!
Two, at 2mm wide, either side of the crank throws. Also the flywheel and disc spacers.
"Nil" end float now........

The now unused, Maiwald burner fitted ok, after shortening the wick tube........

The hole for the threaded crankpin is tapped at an angle. I could have drilled, plugged, and re tapped. But!
Once in position, I bent the screw. Aligning it with, "Engineer's Eye". It works well........

All done........

Thanks for putting this up. I have one of these that I have worked for months trying to get it to run. I had given up. Looks like now I have a few more things to try. Great to see someone can get one of these to run.

Thanks Tech.
This is not my first, stirling engine, which has needed a smaller power piston, to adjust the ratio. "Ye canny change the laws of physics"...... ;)

Dave, just an idea that may be handy one day. For the burner wick, substitute a bundle of iron/ steel wire, about 24,26 swg is about what I use, you'll never need to replace the wick, unless for some reason it rusts away. My next one I'm going to try stainless steel wire.
I discovered this form of wick in vol 1 Model Engineer and Amateur Electrician 1898.
Just make the wire full depth of the tank, plus the 1/4" or so of the protruding wick. Ian S C

Thanks for the tip!
I've just been trying pipe cleaners. With some success.
But, I really prefer using stove rope. Several diameters available, at £1 per metre. And, it lasts "for ever". ^-^

I hadn't hidden it. Honest!
NEXT? NEXT? NEXT? NEXT? Why does everyone want to rush me? :headscratch:
At the moment, I'm prepping 7 engines, for showing at "Steam Toy Lincs". On 7th September.
Then, I'll start on modding Mia's engine. Going to make it into a finger/ little fist, engine. For my 3yr old grandaughter.......

I've baked 48 flapjacks. Hope that's enough! :LickLips:
Now do you think Mia is going to let grandad loose on her engine

Mia's not going to know, until it's too late. I hope! :help:

David D, I post the bit about wire wicks every so often, because there is on occasions some one asking what to use as a wick. I'v used bundles of wire from 1/8" dia, to 3/8" dia, and one was 1/8" x 1/2". Ian S C

Got a reply from Cornish Jack on the Model Engineer web site, at first he had the piston upside down, sorted that, got it running for a short time, then had a piston failure of some sort, is yet to make a new one. Ian S C

Thanks Ian!
I wonder how many first time runners there are, compared to the abandoned failures........
Mine has just completed it's first show. Around 5hrs running time.

David D, I would imagine that there is less than 50% of kits finished to run, and a lot of those probably very close to working, but given up on, maybe with the builder with a sore wrist from flicking it over. If you don't get the clearances right it will sometimes go if you persist long enough turning it over, it happened with the first two or three of my motors, my second motor is twenty one this year, at first it struggled to do 200 rpm free, now it can hit 2000 rpm free, the longer you run them the better they go!
