Title: Flywheel turning on a Sherline mill
Post by: paul gough on December 06, 2017, 11:09:52 AM
Has anyone tried this fellows method of 'getting by' when you can't access a larger lathe? I have to say these little machines do have a versatile side to them! <http://steammachine.com/millturn/> or [http://steammachine.com/millturn/] , hope one of them will take you straight there. Regards Paul Gough.

Interesting setup. The biggest flywheel I've done with my Sherline lathe was for the MEM Corliss, scaled down slightly, was 6" cast iron. Did that with the headstock on the lathe turned 90 degrees, worked fine with light passes. His way looks like it could work for even larger ones. Tricky part is getting enough power when running the motor slow.

I am doubly impressed.  First, by the creative machine setup and second, by wearing what appears to be an expensive white sweater while machining :o

Cheers,
Phil

And just because you don't have a Sherline mill you should not think that you can't have  ago at something similar even if you have a big Cincinatti machine :)
