Title: collet-cover
Post by: Neil-Lickfold on February 20, 2019, 08:57:06 AM
Not sure if this has been shared before.
When holding things in an ER series collet, where possible, I get piece of plastic and put a hole it the size of the round bar part the collet is holding. The outer I make to cover the diameter of the collet nut. So for example, in an ER40 collet holding a piece of 20mm bar, I use old grease caps, to make these washers from. I punch out a 36mm diameter ring, can be bigger . Then punch the centre to match the bar being held. It is thin enough to stay close to the collet nut, and stops the greater majority of chips getting into the collet.
On the smaller ER11 collet, I use a 10mm punch for the outer, and drill the hole for the part being held. Even plastic milk bottle tops work fine.

Sounds like a good idea!

My pet hate is when you bore something held in the three jaw chuck and all the chips end up inside the chuck and the spindle bore - I know you can stuff a rag in or something to catch the worst but I never remember until after the boring operation has started!

Nick, I thought you would have had through coolant collets with the sealed slots :LittleDevil:

I dont use the sealed ones. I make my own solid ones for holding the through coolant tools.

Now, this I would be interested in. I don't have a cylindrical grinder. I've seen shrink fit solid ER collets, but they are stupid expensive.

I make the collets and tool holders in 1operation to ensure the best possible concentricity. The 27 collet is a distortion collet , can only hold parts closer than 0.01mm diameter. Also make step collets, and have threaded stop extensions as well.
