I will try to post a new part (video) once a week, any questions etc, please comment, please be gentle I'm no video expert. :)

Hi folks
Here is Part 2 of the build, or at least Half of it as I have to break it up as the video was getting to large.
When I was editing the video I realized that the sound quality was not the best so that is my next goal is to improve sound and camera angles.
It is quite difficult machining with a tripod in your back pocket.
Hope you enjoy.

Hi Folks
Here is part two of the Stuart cylinder build, I have decided to break this portion of the build into smaller videos to keep them as short as possible and I can post them up at a smaller time frame (at least one per week).
Hope you enjoy.
Gary.

Hi Folks
Here is Part 3 of the build "machining the flywheel" hope you enjoy.
The completion of the cylinder assembly is awaiting parts from the UK, (cast piston rings) I will then post a video of the cylinder assy.
Thank you

Slick video presentation Gary, I whizzed through it to see the finished flywheel which looks very smart.

Thanks Andy
I'll give it a paint over the next few days and post up a photo.
I don't have to tell you how difficult it can be machining cast parts.
All the best
Gary

Hi Folks
A few photos of the painted flywheel and a governor that I purchased of Jin which I will fit to the Stuart.

The machined flywheel with it's new coat of paint looks very nice Gary, your engine is coming on well.  Dave

Gary, just a thought, I know that you have been interested in Chipmaster's build of the big "Major" beam, as am I, ( I have made one...)  but I wonder if you have seen a number of other build logs on this forum that specifically feature the type of somewhat smaller Stuart beam engine that you are making yourself?
In particular I'm thinking of the lovely engine that is set in an engine house diorama that J.L. has written up very fully, in "Engines from castings" section , titled  "Stuart beam engine in diorama",  series begins June 01, 2017.     Dave

Nice work on the column but I was wondering if any body has made these engines with a bit of entasis incorporated into the profile...there is a way of producing the taper mathematically  that I have used but would have to look it up !! good to see this documented ...rather like what Clickspring does...

Thank you Willy for your comment.
A very interesting point concerning a entasis on the column, I guess anything is possible, on my next video I machine a double taper on the connecting rod and that process could be adopted to the column after all it would only be multiple changes of angles during the machining process.
I do all my machining the traditional way with a manual lathe, (it does have a DRO) throws out a bit of a challenge, I have another beam engine to build, so I might give it go.
A entasis with fluting, that would be something else again.
All the best
Gary

Hi Garry, I did make a fluted column for one of the engines I made... it was a copy of an extant engine from the 1840's. The column was taped which was turned freehand, I did find that when the columns were fluted the action of doing this evened up the tapering and it looked quite acceptable...This engine was the bridewell beam engine that is in Norwich.  good luck with this project and I will continuing watching avidly

Hi Folks
"It's Alive"
Test run on air to carry out adjustments, I will connect to steam soon, then post up a longer video.
It it is still very tight, especially the piston rings.
