Title: Vee Cutting
Post by: Arbalest on January 24, 2013, 09:48:04 AM
What's the perceived wisdom from you guys  :naughty:  could a spotting drill be used to cut small vee's in mild steel?

I used to do that sort of thing regularly, when I worked for a living.

A cobalt drill would perform better than "my" hss regrinds used to do!

Don't go deeper than the depth of the point angle. There's no side relief on a spotting drill........

Do they sell "drill mills"

http://www.use-enco.com/CGI/INSRIT?PMAKA=308-0227&PMPXNO=9404927&PARTPG=INLMK32

over there?  They're made to do what you wish to do.

Thanks guys, I've been wondering the same thing and I'm just getting ready to place an Enco order.
I think they are even on sale.

They possibly do, Marv. But, I've never come across them......  :-\

Considering the differences between our languages, it's possible that they're known by an entirely different name.

As said, they're not easy to get over here Marv.

I found this supplier a little while ago but look at the price!

:headscratch: - a good quality 3-flute 90o countersink bit might also do the job...:
Sort of like this one: http://www.somta.co.za/cat/761.htm (http://www.modelenginemaker.com/http:/www.somta.co.za/cat/761.htm)
Needs a bit of clearance for the tip though, so you might have to use a small slot mill to cut that.  Or even a slitting saw with the part in another  set-up.

Kind regards, Arnold

I used a cheap countersink to cut this vee in the peatol, but as Arnold says, its best to cut a narrow slot with a slot drill/hacksaw/slitting saw etc.

I even cut a larger vee with a 1/2 dia. countersink, and although i cabbaged the teeth (forgot to change speeds when i swopped from small slot to countersink) it still produced a decent job.
