Model Engineers Show - March 4, 2017

Set-up: 6:30 am
Open to public: 8:30 am
No compressed air lines - compressor available to fill tanks - bring your own compressor. Some tables available - again bring your own if possible.

Thanks for the reminder Larry. Will look forward to seeing you there. I am happy its back in the original location this year too!! Oh you might want to bring some food or snacks along as well, not a lot of choices on site :)

Anyone else on the forum planning on attending the Pendleton show? Hoping to see it grow even more this year which will be the third year for the show.

I have a conflict with another event that weekend, but if it rains on the 3rd I'll probably ditch it and come to Pendleton.

Here are some pictures from the Pendleton,SC show today. Unfortunately attendance was down somewhat from last year, but a good time was still had by all.
Picture 7 is our forum member Larry Hoke with his fine collection of engines. The last one is a 1/3 scale traction engine under steam.

:thinking: Interesting there are lots of Hit & Miss engines at that show. In the UK (other than JasonB's ever increasing collection) model H&M engines are not that common. We get lots of steam engines. If the aero engine boys turn up there will be a clump of various aero engines, normally the little ones. Of course if the IC- Engine Builder's group turn up we vary the type of IC engines on show up to some real monsters ;)
It is only 4 months to the Guildford show :paranoia: What will I have to display this year :noidea:.

Thanks for those Larry, especially interesting as I have casting sets for three of the hit & miss engines shown still to make.

Speaking of castings...Larry also has a set of castings and plans for a Quincy (and its quite a large engine too) I had failed to add these pictures last night. Any interest Jo or Jason?? :thinking:

:embarassed: I must be honest and say I had spotted that casting set hiding in the top right of one of the photographs. It does look interesting.
It would all come down to price (and shipping costs and import duty :facepalm: ) the dollar rate is not good at the mo :(

You can see the price in the expanded top picture Jo. Have no clue as to shipping costs though, mostly iron castings and substantial too. I am sure Larry could give you more info. or take additional pictures if needed. You are right as to the exchange rate though, largely thanks to Brexit I think. The Cowells would have been unreachable without the more favorable rates now from our standpoint on this side of the pond. I watched it daily for 8-10 weeks and unfortunately it had a mini-peak about the time Colin was ready to ship :(

From engines I have bought in teh past that would cost $125-150 postage and is likely to interest the tax man so at least 20% ontop of purchase & postage costs :(
The Quincy does have the plus point of a covered crank :ThumbsUp:

From what I've read, H&M engines were more popular in the US and Canada than in the UK, and the major makers were all US companies. That may explain why UK modelers are less interested. Or it may be that the casting sets, made in the US, are too expensive when shipping and tax are thrown in.

B.lindsay, I recognize that Quincy kit as the old original. I purchased that design about 10 years ago and updated it, adding a lot of castings to the kit, getting rid of that nasty bar stock, and fixing the many problems with the prints.
The engine has a rich history, and the company that manufactured it is still in business as the Quincy compressor company.
The kit builds a handsome looking engine, and is a very good runner. It never failed to start and run at a show. Nice igniter fired mode. I sold my original, but I am working an another which I will keep. See Att Pic.
The kit is now being sold by Doug over in Ohio at Executive Model Design.

Dave, A couple of the guys from our local old engine club including Doug Kelley were unable to go due to some family things that came up suddenly. Other than that I really don't know. It was good to see Larry though so MEM was well represented as a percent of the total exhibitors :) I do wish we could get more builders though, many of the exhibitors are more collectors than builders. It's still nice to see some well made engines but when you ask about them and get a reply of "I don't know," or "I bought it at the Cabin Fever auction," well for me at least it just isn't the same. Even so, I applaud Norman Durham and his brother for putting the show on for 3 years now. I really do hope it can grow in the years ahead to be a larger "Southern" show

In my opinion the show isn't in the right place to get big. As you alluded to, you need to attract the makers as well as the collectors. The people with the skill and the interest are where the jobs are. From what I can see, the biggest concentration of those types of jobs in this region are Raleigh, Charleston and Savannah. It would probably due better if it was closer to one of those cities.
