Title: A New Lathe. Oh Yeah!!
Post by: Tennessee Whiskey on June 10, 2013, 03:22:32 AM
Ok folks I've been holding out. A few weeks back I was joking with Lou and told her since I oversaw the rebuild of the store and brought it in under budget and ahead of schedule and we had a record setting month of April, I deserved a bonus and a new lathe would be just fine. Well, to my surprise she said; "Order It". She wasn't joking. Hot digidy dog. While still gasping for air I immediately sent a PM to one of our resident lathe experts for advice. Expecting to get a " look at so and so and think about this or that answer I was blown away when I got the amount of info I received. This old boy sent me side by side comparisons, looked at specs for bearing types, looked at owners manuals, and sent links to real owner websites for review. Had it not been for this very nice member here I'd either still be looking or wouldn't have made a wise purchase. After reviewing all the info presented we agree'd the Grizzly G4003G was the best for the bucks. It was delivered last Thursday and today my father and I took the front forks on the Kubota tractor and put it together. I've spent all afternoon wiping monkey snot and running all nine speeds ten minutes in each direction. I'm tired, happy and excited, but, tired. So, if you want to stop back in tomorrow I'll post some piccys and if any of y'all have run this lathe and know of any quirks I'd be thanking you for letting me know bout 'em. Think it's Bud time. And thanks again Pal.

Yalls Redneck,
Eric

Nice aquisition Eric, isn't it great to have a wife just say "order it"? Man what a woman you have bud. Hope you enjoy you new toy. Now you don't have any excuse to get back to work on that engine. Waiting on the photos here.

Nice one Eric  :whoohoo: We are both blessed with wives who, if we really want something, don't erect barricades.  :NotWorthy:

I reckon, reading these forums, there are more Grizzlys in workshops than there are in the woods.  :slap:

Eric

You are a wise man to ask first. You laid the justification and timed the request well.

I sometimes take the opposite course, which is to suffer the consequences. I have to do it that way because I'm a little weak in the justification department.

Lets see some pictures of it with swarf!

A series 200 QCTP would work well.   It works well on my Logan which is about the same size.

Glad your happy with it Eric.

Didn't understand your question though....what little balls?

Thanks again. Jo, it came with steady and follow rest, 3 and 4 jaw chucks and a 10" face plate. I ordered a 5c Bison collet chuck also. Dave it came with a 200 QCTP, but only two straight holders. So, I got tat order a cut off tool holder, a boring bar holder, and possibly a knurling tool. The tailstock is 3 MT and all my good centers and keyless chuck is 2MT, but I bought a sleeve and may use it for awhile. It came with a key type chuck, but, I'm betting it ain't too swift and I've gotten used to the keyless. The little balls. These oiling points have what appears to have little spring loaded balls in them. I know they got a name, but ain't got a clue what kind ya call 'em. It came with a metal tip oil bottle and I assume you press down on the ball and squeeze. They all seemed to take oil fine except when I mashed down on these two the ball went out of sight and won't pop back up  let me know folks

Eric,
Nice lathe, you should be able to make some fairly large parts with it.

This is the type of oiler you are describing:

Don't order the knurling tool for the QCTP.  Get a scissor knurler and save your lathe bearings.  Also, practice your skills by making an aluminum tool holder to hold a DI on center for centering stuff in the 4jaw.  (See my writeup on the subject.)  Remember how you made it and then you can reproduce it in steel for real tool holders.

I hate those oilers!  Have them on my lathe too.

With too pointy an oil spout the little (spring-loaded) balls can get trapped under the lip of the oil hole.  A dentist's pick will pop them out.  Buy an oil can with a hemispherical tip (or grind your own).  That seemed to solve the problem for me.

Nice nice nice!!!
I did the same thing with the oiler on day 1 with my new lathe. Tried every dental instrument that my brother gave me when he retired. No luck but didn't seem to hurt anything. The oil still goes in.
I'm looking at replacing them with oil zerks like on a Bridgeport.
Title: Re: A New Lathe. Oh Yeah!!
Post by: mklotz on June 10, 2013, 10:51:49 PM
The only problem with zerks is that they don't lie flush so they tend to catch when you wipe down the lathe with a cloth.  (Or are there flush zerks?  "Flush zerks" - it sounds like Vegas slang.)

Thanks for the heads up on the oilers folks. Least I'm not the only one. Marv, I'm ahead of you. Have Ali stock and cold rolled for tool holders, but, at least for the cut off holder I'm going with the store bought stuff. I really do appreciate y'alls interest and comments. Now, a funny before I go. On my old SB the drum switch was behind the lathe and twice now I've reached to the light switch on the new lathe ( bout the same position) to turn the lathe off. Creature of habit, naw , just stupid :lolb: :lolb:

In all but those areas where they would interfere with things, (e.g. cross slide nut oiler), I prefer this type, mainly because they're eunuchs.

I think they're called gravity feed oil cups

Call it 'chipster' or 'chip-meister'
'chip' aka 'chad' aka 'chuck' aka 'charles'.
Charles used to be my name.
So then you can get real personal with it.

Oh yes. Charles. Says so on my birth certificate. But it's crossed out and Carl is written.
When I was six, I was an unhappy boy because no one called me Charles. It was chuck, or charlie, or chip.
Parents changed it which upset my grandmother who never called me by name again.

Now I have even more names.
But never 'hey you'.

To quote Charlie Brown, Yep the "old Chuckster". I like it Zee. Chuckster, kinda fitting for a lathe 8) that's it, a whole shop theme. Mill-Woodstock, SB-Snoopy, BeadBlast cabinet-Pig-Pen, rag barrel-Linus, tool grinder-Schroeder, drill press-Lucy, and I could call the whole shop Red Baron Engines. The heat may be getting to me, what do y'all think? :lolb: :lolb:

Dad-blast it! I wished I'd thought of that for myself. The Red Baron stuff brings back a whole lot of memories.
Woodstock is great and so is Pig-Pen. Ha...Schroeder.
Yeah...go for it.

I need to start thinking of some names too. So far all we have is 'fleur-de-bog' for our backyard.
I had one for my shop...can't remember it though. Gotta work the 'zeepster' theme.
I don't like 'man-cave'. Implies no women. Women are always invited. Always.

Not that any come around.  :'(

Got plenty of names for afflications though...

Marv-itis: Drat....I cut the parent stock off too early.
Dave-itis: Form of tennis elbow - scraping.
Arnold-itis: Nah. I'll take the lazy approach.
Eric-itis: No time to machine...gotta grill.
Tel-itis: Can't decide on me headgear.

Don't mean to leave anyone off. I probably think of you all.

Zeepster-itis: I don't have it. I am it. Those that have it made the mistake of listening to me.

Mental instability is an art enjoyed by a select few. It allows releases of frustrations that would send normal people to a nut house. Zee, being of German lineage I think you should stay with the " Meister" theme. Marv, no inflamation here. A cold alcohol based environment is non conducive. Dave, don't wonder, experience. :lolb:

In my reply above (#20), I mentioned the type of oiler I use with great success against those annoying spring-loaded ball oilers.

Since this seems to be a recurring question, I took the opportunity while in the shop today to take a photo of the tip...

(http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j234/mklotz/tools/OILER-1_zps07f9698a.jpg) (http://s81.photobucket.com/user/mklotz/media/tools/OILER-1_zps07f9698a.jpg.html)

The hemispherical tip depresses the ball and simultaneously makes enough of a seal around the lip of the ball hole to allow all the oil coming from the oiler to squirt into the hole and not all over the area surrounding the hole.

I also shot the label on the oiler

(http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j234/mklotz/tools/OILER-2_zps7aaab997.jpg) (http://s81.photobucket.com/user/mklotz/media/tools/OILER-2_zps7aaab997.jpg.html)

although I suspect that there are many firms making something very similar.
