Title: 1/3 Scale IHC Famous
Post by: TobyTetzy on December 07, 2017, 03:54:16 AM
Hello and good morning.

Here are the the first pictures of our IHC Famous in 1/3 scale.
It's build of the OnderStoom Plans from the Nederlands.

My Father beguns to build the steel parts and I begun to build the cart from ash-tree.

Hello,

Bill, yes, we build tree of it.
One for my Father, one for me and the last one, if the others don't run well.  ;)

Today my Father had finished the crankshafts and I made some woodworkings again.

Question, how should I treat the wood so that it becomes oil and gas resistant?
Should I also dye it a little darker?

The last pictures shows the original drawing of the Cart and my drawing in Inventor.

Regards Toby

And here is the pipe I want to use for the Cart Wheels.
It's 114x10 mm.

I tend to use an oil finish such as "danish oil" or more recently one of the oils which also contain wax such as Osmo Poly-x. This would be a similar German product, they also do the Danish oil. Both easy to apply but make sure you wipe off any excess oil after about 15mins as any left sitting on the surface will not dry and you will have a sticky surface.

Today I make the fist "rear axle support", is it the name of it  ::) .

I used my CNC Mill and mill it of 3mm brass.

Very nice work on the axle support Toby. The brass will look very nice too. As for wood finish, I usually use a solvent based wood stain such as Minwax over here in the USA. This is a water thin stain you can either brush on or apply with a cloth and is available in many shades depending on the base wood you are staining. That is followed by 2-3 coats of a polyurethane gloss finish from a spray can. This has held up well for me against oil and fuel.

Hello,

only a little update, because I wait for some more materials ;-)
3mm brass for the other Axle supports, 5x5 and 6x6 stainless steel for screws.

At this time I begun to make the first Box and make some colour tests.

1st is "Osmo 3072 Bernstein Hardwax Oil"
2nd is "Osmo 3073 Terra Hardwax Oil"
3rd  is only "Clou Holz Siegel" on Ash
4tht is "Clou Oak medium stain" and "Clou Holz Siegel"

Hello,

yesterday I paint the Ash with Osmo Hardwax Oil "Bernstein".  :)
I like the result.

I also thinking about the switch for the ignition.
Do you think it's ok so? Or is it too big?

Handle looks too small on the switch and maybe a bit of a fancy design, have you based it on a real one?

This is the Gade one I copied

Toby, I did not enlarge all your thumbnails, in the last one it looks like you had a small turned wooden handle on the switch, I can see now it is just the way the light hits the twisted brass :-[

PS wood colour looks about right.

Hello,

thank you for reply.

Does anyone know the colour of the IHC's?

I want to use RAL colours red and black.
Red engine
black tank and flywheels.

Here is our PowderCoating dealer.
He had RAL 3000, RAL 3001, RAL3003

You will have to look up the RAL equivalent to Dupont but this gives the colour matches for a lot of engines

Hello all.

First I want to wish you nice Christmas Days.

My father makes some more steel work.

Yesterday I paint the rest of the wooden parts.

Then I begun to make the switch.
I take "Pertinax" of 4mm thickness and 3mm Brass.

Now it's time to think about how to make the slots
and thinking about a comression spring or something else to fix the lever and make good electrical contact.
See pictures.

Regards Toby
Title: Re: 1/3 Scale IHC Famous
Post by: Jasonb on December 23, 2017, 04:52:38 PM
I cut the slots with a slitting saw, bit easier if you do it white the part is still attached to the main rod.

If you slightly bend the lever so it is out of line with the slots then the "spring" in the lever will be enough to hold it in the slots.

Hello,

Jason, thanks for the tip.
I will see what my father can do.
He has a slitting saw.
The lever is only slightly bent, I did not know. Thank you.

Today I found a little time and finished the first hinges for the box.
It still lacks the right steel rivets.

Thuesday I visit my father. We'll do some work at the Hand Truck Parts.

My fahter had begun to myke the wheels, and
I've begun to make some parts of the front axle holder.

At Christmas the Engine stands the first time at the Hand Truck.

Hi Toby

You and your dad continue to make very nice parts, everything is coming together nicely!
I'm wondering about the photos of the original battery box, do you have any idea what type of engine that it was from?

I'm at the point that I need to make a battery box for my project and was thinking about maybe doing something similar to what you have done here. I really like the hinge design.
My battery box would have been from the 1890's and I'm not exactly sure what construction and hardware they would have used back then.

Hello and good morning.

Yesterday my father and I do some work on the axle holder.
We also finished the knife switch.

The Wanderer, scale 1/6, is another projekt of my father, and the Allchin, scale 1/12 I think, is for selling.
My father also selling a new, untouched castign kit of the Allchin.

Some very neat soldering on those brackets. I also like your Fathers Fowler, you don't see that many made as the road loco, most are the single cylinder agricultural versions.

Hello,

a little update of our IHC.

My father soldered and rounded off the tank and crankcase.
And has built the water pumps holder.

Next, some levers were built. For that I could do the blanks on my CNC milling machine.
My father then finished the rest of the levers.

Some parts of the tank fittings are already finished.

In the last weeks my father worked a lot on the IHC.
He built many levers, the camshaft, the waterpump, the flywheels, the magneto and many small other parts.

At this time, I build one completly other thing. A crooked garden sheed, or witch house.

Hello Roger.
Thanks for your comment.
Right, the house is also available as a kit or ready to buy.
It was clearly too expensive to buy.
Then, after photos from the internet, I drew it myself and then built it.

Hello,
thanks for your comments.

My dad starts now with the powder coating the parts.
We chose black / red.
The tank, the flywheels and the pulleys are already done.

I would like to surprise my father with stickers.
I saw it at
https://www.binderbooks.com/bb-ds-ih-f2.html
there are "original" stickers.

Now my questions.
Have these stickers really been that way on the engines?
Where were the stickers affixed?
Are these stickers also small or can the stickers be made by someone?

I would like to make a sticker on the box with the ignition.
Is that OK?

I know a manufacturer, Tailormade Decals, but only makes waterslide decals.
I think they are not suitable.

Thanks for the help, Greeting Toby

The plainer "circle" was more often used either on the cylinder or more often the sloping sides of the crankcase. The battery box was also a common place to find the Logo.

http://www.archive.org/stream/internationalhar00inte#page/n1/mode/2up

http://www.archive.org/stream/ihcvictorfamousg00inte#mode/2up

I don't think there is an ideal way to get it onto wood, if you go for waterslide that will work if the wood has a good smooth lacquered or varnished surface and then apply more coats to protect the transfer. You can get them printed onto self adhesive clear but it always shows where the edge of the sticker is.

Waterslide can be done at home by using special paper and putting that through your own printer, for the circle just plain black would be best as colour is too weak or needs printing onto a white background which then has to be cut so any white does not show. This is one I did myself, poor photo but the metal is brass and about 15mm diameter

Toby, I was able to save both logos from your link as jpeg images. You can then insert them into a word document (see the .pdf below) and then use the handles for each image to size them appropriately to your engine's scale. As Jason said, these can then be printed on clear mylar 8 1/2 x 11 inch sheets available at most office supply places (Avery or similar brand). With careful trimming the mylar film (which isn't totally clear) can be minimized. This is best done with a color laser printer though. Since the sheets are not cheap you maw want to print as many of each logo on a sheet as you can and save them. They will eventually wear over time but I did this on the B&S engine in my avatar and it doesn't look bad at all

Hi Toby, I don’t know if you keep up with other posts, but I was at a show recently and was interested to see a fully restored hit and miss engine called an IHC Famous.

I remembered your project so took a couple of pictures for you and your dad.  (In the post on the Orford show.)

When I had another look at your thread, I had obviously remembered the name but not the engine.  Judging by the stickers, it was the same name and company, but obviously a different design.  Perhaps the same name was continued as designs developed over the years.  But if they are of any interest to you I can send you the photos that I have, such as they are.

Hi Toby, those two are really running well.  Always good to see the first run of an engine, let alone two together.  And the engines are really looking great.  Beautiful work by both you and your father.

Does that mean you don’t need the third one now?  Or did it get dropped off earlier in the thread?

Will these each get a pump to drive?

Hello,

the third engine is not yet running because the inlet valve is not tight.
He will be running soon.

What my father would like to do with the third engine, I would have to ask  ::)

Yes, exactly, these motors are supposed to drive the water pumps.
I'm still thinking about how to mount the motors with the truck and the pumps on a board, for example.
It would be nice if you could change the pumps.
Then you could also drive our generator.

Hello,

with the IHC it goes on.
All three water tanks were turned, the "lid" with the grid is still missing.
The chassis was also continued.
All parts have been powder coated.

I accidentally saw a clutch pulley. That would be good for the IHC.
Are there possibly drawings, sketches of the function?

Hello,

With our small engines that were built before the IHC Famous, we pulled rubber over the wheels of the handcart rubber of a bicycle hose.
I did not like it that much.
That's not how it should be at IHC.

Since I had some time ago poured polyurethane, there were bonnets rubber for my vintage car, came up with the idea to pour tires themselves.

I started with a 3D printing form. Picture 1-3.
Since the individual layers were clearly visible, I milled a mold in plastic. Picture 4-6.
I filled the molds with a syringe. Here is a test with soft silicone.

Since a lot of air is stirred in by stirring the two polyurethane components, the air unfortunately collects at the top in the mold.
Picture 7.

After some search on the Internet, I have milled a new master model, I have now molded with silicone.
From these shapes, the model can be better solved later.
Picture 8-16.
In the first plastic mold, the tire broke during demoulding because the mold was more stable than the tire.

In addition, I bought a vacuum pump with vacuum chamber. Picture 17.
Before it is poured, the air bubbles are drawn out of the mixture. Never thought it was such a difference.

Meanwhile, the result looks very good. Picture 18-20.
Now I can pour 12 pieces of each tire.

Greeting Toby

Hello,
Thank you for your comments.
From time to time I still have air bubbles in the tires, especially in the big tires.
That's because I need 19ml material, but my syringe is only 20ml. If I press too much, the rest of the air from the syringe comes in the mold.
If I press too little, air will remain in the vent syringe at the other end of the mold.
I have already ordered larger syringes.
What do not you do for the hobby?
But it is always nice to see a finished result.

Hello,

This week I got a test print of the stickers for the IHC.
Unfortunately, the color on the transparent film is not thick enough.
More test stickers are in the works.

Hi,
I have now got stickers that were printed on a white background.
It looks much better.
At the engines are still many little things to do that last a long time.

Hi,
my dad finished the engines.
Here are some pictures and a video.
The clutch pulley works very well as well.
Unfortunately, the engine needs more ignitions to get back into Miss mode. It would be better if the engine would ignite only once.
I do not know why.
If someone has a hint for us, we would be very happy.

Hi Toby, what a beautiful job by you and your father.  One to be really proud of.

Regarding the number of ignitions, my understanding is that as you load up the engine, it fires more often.  I wonder if the new engine plus the load from the water is just adding enough load to require the extra power strokes until things loosen up a bit.  It looks and sounds so good, it is hard to believe there is much wrong.  But I am sure that others with more experience in that area will be along soon.

Very beautiful engine and it runs nice too :praise2:

There are many factors involved, but it does not sound very powerful (I might be wrong) and it requires some power to accellerate those flywheels - and do not make them lighter, as it will not coast as well ....

You might have a slightly too strong inlet spring, that prevents it from breathing as well as nesessary.

Hi,
thank you for the answers.

The engine does not have much power.
(It even has less power than the small 17.5 cc motor my father built before, which had only 20 Watts with a powered generator.)
The IHC runs but also with very low speed, about 700 U / min.
If I increase the speed, with stronger springs on the flyweights, it has more power.
But then it still needs 2, sometimes 3 ignition sequences until it comes in the state of miss.

I will discuss this with the inlet valve spring with my father.
Thanks for the hint.

Toby, I am a complete newbie to IC model engines, so take this with a grain of salt, but ... it looks/sounds to me as though the valve is cycling more often than the engine is firing - there might be a couple of cycles of the valve and then a pop. Especially towards the end, it often sounded like the engine only fired once on each hit, but it took two or three cycles of the valve to do so.

Regardless, absolutely beautiful work!

Absolutely beautiful Toby, both you and your father should be proud.

Don't forget that at the moment the engine is " bedding in " and it's perhaps a little early to be tinkering.

However after a few hours you might find that a slight restriction in the air intake and with a little richer fuel mixture that you'll get a single hit with several misses in between.

As a point of note, hit and miss governing was only fitted to prevent the engine from going into destruction if the drive belt broke or became disconnected. Normally, under load ( working ) conditions they would fire every time.

Cheers Graham.

You should not expect much power from it as it is in the video, think of it like your car engine when sitting in traffic - it is just ticking over. Once loaded it will fire on every stroke and that is when the power comes in. For example if you had this driving a saw rig it would just tick over until some wood was fed into the blade which would put load on it and then the engine will pick up to drive the saw through the wood.

A slight reduction in the venturi diameter may help to get the correct mixture when the engine first misses

Right at the end of this video you can hear the engine fire on every stroke when I load the flywheel

Hi,
thank you for the answers.

Here's an attempt that ignites the engine only one cycle.
For this purpose, the air intake was slightly reduced.
I just stuck some tape over it.
Unfortunately, the engine does not work after a short time.

Jason, is this possibly a sign that the engine gets too much air, and thus the mixture is not right?
You had written to reduce the Venturi a bit.
This would make the air flow higher in less air, right?

Hi,
I built the generator for testing at the IHC today.
With the electronics you can adjust the load variably.
I did not think that the generator needed so much power.
You can even stop the IHC with it.
