This model is in 1 1/2inch scale and is being designed from the original patent drawings. There are no castings, everything is machined from solid or fabricated.
The mechanism at the front is to allow the front of the boiler to be jacked up and down to keep the water in the boiler level.
The engine is put into gear by jacking up the rear of the engine so that pinions on the ends of the crankshaft, engage with gears on the inside of the rear wheel rims.

Brian, have you got a few more pics of the front end as that looks to have come on quite a bit from the last photos that I saw? Don't think you had the tender on either or should that be "manstand" as there does not look to be a lot of water holding capability.

In answer to JasonB, below is a better picture of the front end showing the elevating mechanism.
The water tank is slung under the boiler and some of it can be seen in the picture.
The manstand and the towing assembly are fairly recent and are unfinished. I'm working on the cylinders at the moment and will then move on to the crankshaft supports and the rest of the motion.

That has progressed a lot since I last saw pictures.
Did not know it had a rise and fall on the front, have seen this on a couple of traction engines is is also used to help keep the boiler level when negotiating steel inclines?

Yes, this engine was at Forncett last year and will be there again this year on 1st Oct 2017.

I thought that I'd better do an update to this. Lots of work done (and redone) and the mechanism for raising the rear of the boiler, to put the pinions on the ends of the crankshaft into gear with the internal gears inside of the hind wheels, is mosly finished.

Looks good Brian, what would have been the purpose of being able to raise and lower the boiler? I have seen a few traction engines where the front perch bracket was adjustable and it was said to be to keep the boiler at the best angle when going down hill so the crown sttayed covered in water. I suppose it may also have beeen to help with ground clearance as your engine would have been best suited to working on soft ground.

The raising and lowering of the rear of the boiler puts the engine in or out of gear. Raising the boiler also raises the crankshaft with pinions on the ends and puts them in mesh with the internal gears inside the hind wheels.
If you are going to the Doncaster show you will get a better view.

It's been a long time since I last posted but much progress has been made.
The boiler is almost finished, the boiler inspector is happy with the work meaning that I can go ahead and assemble the last remaining parts before the first hydraulic test.

Time for another update. The boiler is almost finished but needs a modification as the bosses for attaching the forward chassis moved whilst silver soldering.
I've come up with a better solution that I wish I'd thought of before.
This is a mock up showing one of the hind wheel guards in place.
The model is being made ready for the model exhibition in Doncaster (UK) in May.
