Title: Mini Oil Can
Post by: gbritnell on September 04, 2018, 06:41:04 PM
I don't have a big project in the works until the weather gets bad but I have to keep busy making chips or else I start getting the shakes.
I have a friend who is always doing favors for me, letting me use his shop when my machines aren't big enough or handing me cut-off pieces of stock. We have known each other for around 60 years and started out plumbing together for his dad's business when we got out of the Army.
We both ended up in the machine trades, me as a metal patternmaker and he with his own shop.
He never charges me anything for the stock he gives me so I try to do little things for him as a payback.
A fellow on the other forum Stefan-K posted pictures and drawings for a mini oil can. I thought it would be neat to make one for my friend, and one for me while I was at it.
I did make some changes, mainly internal, as I built it but stayed pretty much to the drawings. My fingers are probably medium sized and I can jam the tip of my index finger into the handle to operate the plunger. The original design used a piece of round stock but I thought the flat handle would give a better hold when playing with it.

OK, whenever George Britnell describes something as "mini", clarification of the scale is mandatory.  These could be museum quality full-size oil cans or, given George's skill at building tiny engines,

could be less than an inch high.

Please, George, give us some clue as to the scale.

Here is Stefan's video of it in action, very neat little unit!
I hope its okay to pass on this link, he had it on the other site? If not I'll remove it.

This looks like a great little project, good use for offcut metal from other projects....

Blimey that is mini - needed to see the hand to get the true scale!

As I suspected!  It would be a thing of beauty in full scale but is even more appealing as a miniature.

Thanks so much, George.  Superb work as usual, though there's nothing "usual" about it.

Isn't that a air valve cap that fits a car tire next to the engine. If so...yep it is small.

Have a great day,
Thomas

Gentlemen,
For anyone contemplating building one of these tiny pump oil cans I have made a drawing showing the things that I changed to (in my mind) make it easier to build. Along with the parts I have explained how I made some of the pieces and the assembly procedure.
Happy building,
gbritnell
