This is my, "Gold Blend" engine. During construction...........

At the recent show. Running very well, as usual.
Towards the end of the day, I went for a walk round, to see the other tables. About 1/4 hour. :)
When I returned, black smuts were coming from the firebox. And it was blummin HOT!!! :o
The twin, beeswax candles, had spontaneously combusted........ (http://serve.mysmiley.net/mad/mad0235.gif) (http://)
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/P1030870_zps84c2965e.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/P1030870_zps84c2965e.jpg.html)
Balsa wood doesn't like high temperatures.........
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/P1030874_zpsadfb7852.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/P1030874_zpsadfb7852.jpg.html)
The outside of the cap had a thick coating of soot. And, some pretty colours inside........
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/P1030875_zpsc6d48f64.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/P1030875_zpsc6d48f64.jpg.html)
And a sticky, smelly deposit on the piston and displacer rod. Action jammed.......
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/P1030876_zps2c3f385a.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/P1030876_zps2c3f385a.jpg.html)
Time for another rebuild! :facepalm2:
Sigh.......

Yep...I would say she got hot alright!! Doesn't look like any damage that can't be fixed though...and a very nice looking engine too David!! When you get it back in ship shape, I would enjoy seeing a video of it running if possible.

The damage seems very minor ....I'm sure you can sort it!...

Nothing that can't be fixed....... ;)

Hmmm...... Almost a month gone, already! :o
Not had much workshop time, recently. Just a few minutes, here and there......
I made up a bundle of offcuts, to give a 4" square cube.........
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/P1030883_zpsa6d57b76.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/P1030883_zpsa6d57b76.jpg.html)
And started to turn it into a former, for the new displacer. Messy stuff.........
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/P1030886_zps128ceb4f.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/P1030886_zps128ceb4f.jpg.html)
Finished article.........
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/P1030887_zpsacffb976.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/P1030887_zpsacffb976.jpg.html)
Wrapped tinplate around, and soldered the overlap..........
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/P1030900_zps1350fabc.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/P1030900_zps1350fabc.jpg.html)
Two off, 3mm thick end discs. Thinned to 1mm, where possible........
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/P1030895_zps942ea1c6.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/P1030895_zps942ea1c6.jpg.html)
The wooden former, held the disc square to the tube, while I drilled for 6off 1.5mm dia rivets
Natural ingredients only, for my engines.......
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/P1030902_zps3250d521.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/P1030902_zps3250d521.jpg.html)
Then rolled the tin over the end cap, and tidied up with a gentle touch on the grinder.........
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/P1030903_zps8a6d28a4.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/P1030903_zps8a6d28a4.jpg.html)
Internal boss for the 4mm threaded displacer shaft.......
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/P1030904_zps6a7c5445.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/P1030904_zps6a7c5445.jpg.html)
Held with 2off M2 grubscrews, and hi temp sleevelock........
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/P1030907_zpse3f46bb5.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/P1030907_zpse3f46bb5.jpg.html)
The assembly spins true, within half a mm. Close enough........
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/P1030912_zpsea75fea5.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/P1030912_zpsea75fea5.jpg.html)
Initial runs, on twin candles were disappointing.
The hollow displacer sounds to be grinding/ grating as it slides through it's bush. Quite noisy!
Not a coffee table engine any more!
The new displacer weighs 94grms. The original one weighed 69gms, after toasting. The extra weight caused a hesitation, getting over TDC.
So I added 3 extra, 2" x 1/2" x 1/8" weights to the flywheel........
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/P1030910_zps9b91a3b8.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/P1030910_zps9b91a3b8.jpg.html)
Didn't make any difference! (http://serve.mysmiley.net/mad/mad0235.gif) (http://)
So, I tried with my temporary meths burner, and it ran happily. Well balanced, even up to blurred revs.
I feel another, stainless burner coming on....... ;)

Tht's got to be the best looking "can" Stirling I've ever seeen. Nice work on that thin metal there.
That thing looks huge, what's the bore/stroke?
-
I agree with JW...well done on the new displacer too!! Looking forward to seeing it running as well.

I simply love Trecle !! Is that how it’s spelled ? Never called it anything else. I grew up with the stuff, but haven’t had any in years. I haven’t been able to find any in the states. While I was deployed overseas I ran into some British soldiers and asked them if they had any Trecle….they all laughed at me for asking that way and said I must be really old to call it that !! I'm not that old !! But in the end I had acquired a big tin of the deliciousness. I reminded me of home while I was in a very hostile environment !! It was very soothing at the time and place to have some home comfort reminders. Anyway…just thought I would pass that along…..good use of the tin !!

Aye up David, its grand ta see t engine coming back together glad youve managed un shop tahm

Dave V45.
I too have enjoyed treacle ("treekl"), over the past 70 yrs. Never did/ do call it by it's correct title! :LickLips:
Use it in my morning porridge. Also, I use it in the flapjacks I bake, for my other forum's members........

Never forgetting to finger clean out the residue, before washing and storing the empty tin. :P

And..... Here's the burner, that was coming on, a couple of weeks ago! (http://serve.mysmiley.net/rolleye/rolleye.gif) (http://www.blueislandsdiving.com)
Usual build. Top of a salt grinder/ pot.
Brass disc, base, with central locating bar, and supporting foot underneath the wicktube.......
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/P1030935_zpse5e51b85.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/P1030935_zpse5e51b85.jpg.html)
The crossbar locates nicely, in the rim of the bowl/ firebox.......
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/P1030937_zps93806afb.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/P1030937_zps93806afb.jpg.html)
Until, my fumbly fingers knocked the burner, fully inside the firebox!
The only way to retrieve, was to lift the hot engine, while it was running. :(
A taller, breather tube, stopped that happening again.........
(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/P1030941_zpsd57800af.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/P1030941_zpsd57800af.jpg.html)
