Title: Bengs, Flame Eater. "Nick".........
Post by: Stilldrillin on April 06, 2014, 01:27:08 PM

Hi Chaps.

Had a frustrating, past few days. Can't quite get my thoughts, around the vague idea I have. For another Stirling engine.

The recent grimey weather has kept my creaking joints, out of the shop.  :(

Then, there's the spring cleaning......   :facepalm2:

Then, the once I actually did get in there. At the door, a plaintive voice began shouting, "I want to play with Grandad!" Game over.......

So...... I had a look in the toy cupboard.

This came to me, around 3 years ago. A Bengs, Flame Eater. "Nick".

It needs a burner.........

Don't like that weird "chimney"........

(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/P1040260_zps4a9fbee6.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/P1040260_zps4a9fbee6.jpg.html)

Only 1 flywheel.......

(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/P1040261_zps997886e5.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/P1040261_zps997886e5.jpg.html)

But...... This one is different to most of my orphans!

It RUNS! Sort of........

That's a nice looking engine Nick. Similar to but much more robust  that the poppin from the looks of it. Can't say I've ever seen one with a chimney, but it doesn't look all that much out of place either. And as you say...this one runs at least :)

What does the chimdy do, what's it connected to or is it just for show

Hi Bill, Stuart.

The chimney base, houses a 6mm dia. rubber ball. Which acts as a one way valve. Allowing pressure out. Keeping vacuum in......

Don't know why it needs to look like a Fieldmaster tractor exhaust!

Here's where it originated....... http://www.bengs-modellbau.com/materialkits/flameeater/flameeaternick.php

That's an interesting twist

I have heard of valves on Stirling engines but not on vacuum engines

Wow, that's quite the fancy flame adjuster shown on the web site. I was hoping there might be plans but it looks like its a fully machined kit. Still a very handsome engine though.

Hi Stuart, "Dampfforum" is our German forum with a good level of knowledge and a lot of very friendly people.
Their are nearly 970 members from Germany, Austria, Netherland......and also one American.
It is a closed forum, to be protected against all external search engines.
It was founded by Hans Temme, who is gone a couple of years ago and it is now driven by Peter Fallaschek.
Peters private website is the "Dampfundmehr" homepage, mentioned already.
This year we have had our 10 year anniversary.
If you are interested, do not hesitate to register, you are welcome.
The language is German only, all people are posting by their real names and avatars are none or a real picture of yourself.
You are welcome.

Achim.

Thanks for the info but as my German is limited to a very small sub set related to electrical/electronics due to the fact that when I was in work we had some Anton Piller machines and the info on them was in German hence the small amount I know

Well......

It needs a burner.
I don't like the "chimney".
The single flywheel's on the wrong side. (I like to see the crank etc. working).
It runs the wrong direction, and, it's the wrong colour.
Needs a pulley making, for the unused shaft.

Apart from that, it's perfect!  ;)

What's a Rebbi?  :headscratch:

We have quite a number of people on the Stirling Engine Forum who are non English speakers, Sweden, Hungry, Italy, India, and a number of other countries, a lot of them using Google translator.  It's sometimes a bit difficult translating the translation, but we usually get the idea that is trying to be put across, the German should not be too bad.

I finally managed some shop time, this afternoon!  :cartwheel:

Started work on the burner.

Silver soldered the top, into 15mm x 40mm copper pipe. Then drilled for  wick holder and filler plug.

Like this.......

(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/IMG_20140516_154439789_zps5f63506b.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/IMG_20140516_154439789_zps5f63506b.jpg.html)

Experimented with the smallest dia wick I have, (4mm). To determine the optimum wick height.

Shortening the wick tube, 2mm at a time, until the engine doesn't want to run.

Then packing under the burner, back up to working height. Will next, make a tube of the correct length.........

(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/IMG_20140516_154144799_zps001a9bc4.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/IMG_20140516_154144799_zps001a9bc4.jpg.html)

I found revs would improve, with a temporary "canopy"........

(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/IMG_20140516_154131763_zpse48faaef.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/IMG_20140516_154131763_zpse48faaef.jpg.html)

Think we need something more permanent, above the inlet port.

A few steps in the right direction. At last!  :whoohoo:

Nice work on the burner David !  I still find that chimney thingy unique. Don't think I've ever seen one  before to be honest. Seems like it would complicate the timing somewhat but still adds an interesting touch to the model.

Iv noticed the chimney on a few continental designed engines that have the ball exhaust valve.
Do you think it may be keeping the flame away from the nitrile exhaust valve rather than just for effect??

Thanks Fellas!  :)

I thought the knife blade would cause a few comments.  ;)

It's half, of a pair of leccy carving knife blades. They've been in the, come in handy pile, for some years now.......

Bill.
The "chimney", just positions the nitrile ball in it's seat. The adjusting screw on top, has no effect.
Though, the engine slows to a stop, if the outlet is blocked.

Frazer.
With the pipe in the flame. I would guess it heats the ball.......

Frankly, I don't know what to do with it, if anything.......

Hi David, maybe cut the pipe off and tap the top of the fitting so that a screw can be used to restrict the balls movement .This will give speed control.
Make a shield with a chimney as an exhaust for the flame.Iv seen it done that way mainly on the continent.
Have a look

That's the way my thinking is going.......

Sitting, watching it run, at it's best. I realised, half the flame was above the port. It needed something to hold the heat at port level.

Incidentally..... I hope you realise how inadequate you make me feel. Showing the gems which you find, and make!  :facepalm2:

Still not finding much enthusiasm, for this refurb. Dunno why........

Finally got the burner finished!   :)

Soldered in, the wick tube and filler bush. Then fluxed, ready to install base.

Rather enthusiastic with the plumber's solder.......

The lack of plumbers solder! Now you've got me! Mr Drillin', I'm watching. So far, your usual standard is on display. Hugh.
Title: Re: Bengs, Flame Eater. "Nick".........

David, instead of copper wire for the wick, try steel/iron wire, I use fine florists wire, stainless might be even better, my theory is that the copper conducts heat away, as does copper tube used for the wick tube, so thin steel tube here too.  The fiber glass should be good.  I'v tried cotton, and that's ok until it runs out of fuel, then the cotton burns.

Hugh.
I think we're slightly at cross purposes......
I'm grumbling at the mass of plumbers solder. Would have been a lot neater, using electical solder!  ::)

Ian.
I'm happy and settled with the stove rope, in it's various diameters to suit differing situations.
But, your previous postings made me have to experiment.  ;)
I've just ordered a bundle of 32gauge florist's wire........

The engine's all held together with M2 threads, having 3mm a/f nuts. The same as the socket in an M4 caphead.  ;)

Reduced the head diameter as far as sensible. Then drilled 2mm x 1/4" deep, to clear the longer thread.

Couple of locked nuts, for a handle........

(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/IMG_20140610_205206688_zps0fc68cc3.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/IMG_20140610_205206688_zps0fc68cc3.jpg.html)

Works a treat!

Not happy with the lack of "compression". No head/ cyl seal, won't help!  ::)

The slot for the poppin up n down valve, seems to be a bit deep. At 10thou clearance.......

(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/P1040313_zps293f4ea1.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/P1040313_zps293f4ea1.jpg.html)

Gave everything a rub on fine emery. Reducing slot depth, to give 5thou clearance.......

And......
The run didn't go well. Stopping every few seconds. :ShakeHead:

I realised, the engine didn't spin over, as it had done previously. Possibly out of alignment, after I had tightened all the loose nuts?

Time to strip further!

Piston. Scuffed one one side. With what looks like ptfe tape packing.........

David, did the piston have packing originally?  I would have thought that the packing would be a source of friction, and PTFE expands on heating.  My flame licker has a steel bore, and cast iron piston, no packing, or rings, and just able to slide down the bore under its own weight.
The scoring on the cylinder/ piston might relate to running two like metals together, which is a no no unless it is cast iron.        Ian S C

Ian.
The bottom of the piston groove has multiple scratches, across it's whole circumference. As though someone has dug out the original packing ring.
But, what the packing was, is anyone's guess......

I was going to replace the piston with another brass one. But have steel, cast iron, aluminium, and graphite in stock. Any suggestions as to what to use?  ;)

Hi David, most of the Bengs (Flammenfresser) flamelicker are running with graphite pistons. Absolutely dry, no oil.
When I have build my engine some years ago, I have made the mistake that some oil find the way into the cylinder. After making a new piston everything was fine.

Hi David, I have used my shop vacuum cleaner directly at the lathe near the cutting tool. So there was no dust flying around.
Title: Re: Bengs, Flame Eater. "Nick".........
Post by: Ian S C on June 16, 2014, 03:39:06 PM
David, I think the Graphite is about the best choice you have there.  The bore must be polished, then the piston turned to just about size, then polished down by wrapping a bit of plain paper around it (still in the lathe), just hold it as you would a bit of abrasive cloth.
DO NOT GET OIL ON IT.  I'v never used a graphite piston, but it should give good service in a polished bore.
Graphite pistons in glass cylinders are used as door closers, in the likes of commercial buildings.  At one time they were available as free samples from the manufacturers if you lived in USA.         Ian S C

Ian S C

Ian.
Needing a polished bore, and your warning about oil........  :-\

I'm thinking about it's later life. Cos, I'm reliably informed, it's going to Norway. When I'm done with it.

Might go with c/i. Or, not.......  :headscratch:

Anyroad! Here's a pic for you........

Not too sure on the wear on the cylinder with a cast iron piston, is the cylinder brass or bronze? Should be OK.
Your burner look like one of mine.  I found the wire wick in volume 1 of Model Engineer 1898.      Ian S C

That's a nice engine Ian!
We've very similar burners, too. Seems, wire wicks have stood the test of time......   ;)

I've gone the graphite route.......

(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/IMG_20140617_145633469_HDR_zps52f0ffe3.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/IMG_20140617_145633469_HDR_zps52f0ffe3.jpg.html)

Quite a clean system, vacuuming during machining. Thanks Achim!

I've now got a roughed out piston........

(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/IMG_20140617_150301199_zpsd6bf3631.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/IMG_20140617_150301199_zpsd6bf3631.jpg.html)

What's bothering me, is the need for a polished bore. Which I can do, no problem. Probably.

But, it will probably be tapered. Which I can't fix, until I make the piston to fit into the large end.

But, I can't enlarge the tight end by polishing. It will need honing, then polishing........

And probably finish up, oversize........  :facepalm2:

I'll quietly, get on with it, and see what happens.  :)

By 'ek! It's more than two months, since work stopped on this engine!  :o

From the last line, of the last post. I actually did, "get on with it", at the time.........

Turned a 12mm dia mandrel.......

(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/IMG_20140620_125451183_HDR_zps9aa288fd.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/IMG_20140620_125451183_HDR_zps9aa288fd.jpg.html)

Then turned/ polished the piston to a nice fit in the cylinder......

(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/IMG_20140620_125659505_zpse0c4c4a2.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/IMG_20140620_125659505_zpse0c4c4a2.jpg.html)

Temporary assembly. Losing one of the M2 nuts, in the process.

It still runs!  Now, needing no warm up! :whoohoo:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZdg34VJ6Yw

I now, need to think of an "eyebrow", over the flame/ port area.

And, that's the point where it all stopped........  :disappointed:

This project, just stopped! I've been busy. One way or another.

That twin is gorgeous. I think I need to ask his permission to show his vid, on here.......

I've finally got Gold Blend working well. Also with a graphite piston........  :)

Hi Chaps.

Well..... I could do with an idea, or two.

The solder holding the shutter operating arm to the shaft, has let go.......

(http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n95/Dayjo/Return%20Album/IMG_20140831_082432288_zpscace4930.jpg) (http://s110.photobucket.com/user/Dayjo/media/Return%20Album/IMG_20140831_082432288_zpscace4930.jpg.html)

Probably due to the assembly being adjusted for sliding shutter height. The 3mm pivot shaft was also bent, and binding in the bearings.

What I would like is an adjustable/ lockable assembly. Not just soldered in place. Mebbe.........

I'm thinking of a flange, soldered to the shaft. With screws through, into the arm.  :headscratch:

Anyone got any better ideas? Thanks!

Thanks Frazer.

That's given me the idea to fix the central arm. And adjust the operating arm position, with a nut or screw.

The operating arm is fixed to the end of the shaft. I'll drill through at the pivot point, tomorrow. And, see what I'm left with......

Well..... I'm still here Chaps!

Isn't it amazing, how life gets in the way of progress!  ::)

I fitted the compound slide to my little lathe, and extended the outer taper, at 2.5*.

Then bored the inner taper, at 2* to give a slightly thicker wall, at the head end........

Silver soldered in place. Tidily. Using Jo's dip n dab method.......

Shutter arm sleevelocked. All in line........

That should be fun,
I built one to my own design and found its the burner thats the problem .Getting the flame over the valve without interfering with the valve and the weight of the valve mech slows it down as it builds up speed the follower comes off the cam.
maybe just my crap design.
cheers
