Hi All,

Here is a project that I purchased from an estate a number of years ago. The previous owner had several locomotives that were basically just frames with wheels and sometimes cylinders.

The first thing I did with the locomotive was disassemble everything. The drawings called for needle bearings running on soft axles. So, the drivers came off the axles and the axles were discarded. While I was doing this; I cut the wheels down to shrink steel tires onto them. I ended up making new journal boxes along with the axles. The axles were fitted with hardened steel inner races so the new needle bearings would be set up properly.

The front drive axle has a pair of eccentrics on it to run the water pumps. The eccentrics are machined integrally with the axle. the ends of the axles were turned normally and finished between centers. There were 2 "rings" on the axle...Pump eccentrics aren't critical for the throw. As long as the pump ram doesn't bottom out in the bore, it's fine. The eccentrics were generated just using a piece of packing between one of the jaws of the 3 jaw and the part. Eyeball is fine.

I've made the Baker long frame valve gear as you can see in the pics. The castings were discarded (except for the frames) because they just looked like lumps of metal. John Hudak made several of the valve gear parts for me using the original dimensions and prototype drawings. The cnc mill I now own made a lot of the other parts in the valve gear, too.

The lead truck has actual rockers in it. Again, the curved slots were cut using the cnc mill.

The cylinders that were on the locomotive were slide valve cylinders. I'm making true piston valve cylinders for it as you can see in the bottom pic. They started out as round hunks of iron bar. The porting needs to be done and the rest of the milling also needs to be done.

Here is a link to a website that is now selling the castings for this model...

I have purchased a few castings from this guy...They are very nice. I have no connection to him.
