Title: Removable crank for Sherline Rotary table
Post by: steamer on December 23, 2018, 11:43:11 PM
I've adapted a Sherline Rotary Table to the spigot mount of the Aciera F1 mill.   It's a pretty simple affair, and it would seem to fit well with this size machine.   That's good as the original swiss table is over $2000 on "The Bay"....which I think is complete lunacy....

That said, the crank on this table is small, and not very sensitive, or ergonomic.    the little crank handle has long since broken off, leaving the dial.   For an otherwise great table, this was very unappealing.

OK so Im adding a crank handle.  This handle will have a 3/8" hex drive internal socket, and I'll add a 3/8 hex drive bushing to the table.  On this will be a reset-able zero dial that I obtained by cutting it off the Sherline dial.   I'll put a thumb screw on it, an have it resetable.   this crank has a 3" throw, so It should be easy to turn the table when I'm milling with it.   Additionally the crank will slide right off when its time to put it away.

Very nice looking crank. Will it clear the table/cranks/etc on the mill okay in any position? I have the sherline rotab, on a sherline mill, and a longer handle like that would not clear the lower table. Only caution I would have is to make sure you dont crank if the table is locked in position with the set screw in its side, that longer crank would put a lot of pressure on the gears. Okay, two - you will probably need to lock it down when milling to keep it from creeping, especially with the handle in place - on mine, that can be an issue, need to keep the tension on that set screw a bit to keep it from wandering over a fraction of a degree sometimes.

Very neat job

Thank you Twizeven, and it being a Sherline product, parts are readily available....unlike Aciera parts      When the Aciera table comes up on Ebay...it's usually $2000+ :hammerbash: :lolb:

How do you lock the resettable number ring?

I always intended to simply drill and tap a hole into the center of the handwheel then locktite in a socket head screw that fits my battery screwdriver. Then Id have power feed on all axis of the Sherline just by picking up my driver.

Very nice Dave! Lots easier than using the little handle that comes standard.

It doesnt reset anymore.   Ill move the table pointer to zero it.   From there, you rotate the whole table to zero the work    this is very easy to do with the Aciera. As the table is mounted on a 35mm post.    Thats the standard way to zero out the various attachments.  Vise and rotary table

A few shots of what I'm getting on about with the Aciera...it's a bit of a different beast compared to "normal" mills

A couple more shots showing the saddle mount attachment for everything but the main tables.   This mount holds the dividing head, the accessory right angle attachment, the mill vice, and the rotary table,   If you take this saddle mount attachment off, you can put on a tilt swivel table and/or a fixed table.      I don't have the tilt swivel table but I do have the fixed table.

The attachments are all based on the 35mm posts, so you can configure them just about any way you like.

The interesting thing is.  the rotary table is not gear driven.   It's just a plain rotating table, with stop dogs....that's it.  Its really a rounding table....

No provisions for driving it at all.     The Sherline has it beat there.

The indexing head is convertible to the dividing head with the dividing head attachment.   I have both.   It's like this "push pull click click" kinda set up to mount the dividing gear assembly to the indexing spindle.   All using W12 collets, or a M22 x 1.0 threaded spindle nose that compatible with the Schaublin 70 lathe spindle nose.

and yes...all made by the trolls of the black forest out of un-obtainium..... :wallbang:

Good that you gave the accessories you have then. That represents a lot of $$$. Very nice mill though!!!

Dave,
That's an elegant solution, very creative. I'm not sure I would do well on your Aciera mill. To many variables, but then again an almost infinite way to set things up. good job

Steamer,

You have some nice bits with your Aciera.  Mine is the earlier F12.  Gradually collecting bits.  My mate also has one (F1 version) and has made a number of castings for various parts.  Hew rebuilt the spindle is mine before I bought it of him..

Not got quite so many bits as yours.

OK   got to try out the Sherline rotary table with the Aciera mount and external crank.     It Worked Perfectly!

I dialed the table to zero, set the zero pointer and then mounted the table.   I then trammed the right most T slot to be parallel to the Long axis of the mill..   Easy peasy!

No zero setting dial required!

Nice rugged table.  It cut beautifully!

Glad it worked well for you Dave.  I've always loved my little 4" Sherline RT.  It's a joy to use.  And I'll be your custom handle made it even better!
