Title: Cabin Fever next month
Post by: crueby on December 16, 2017, 08:39:27 PM
So who all is going to Cabin Fever next month?

I am finally going again (been too long) and am planning on taking my Shay, Lombard, Corliss, and vertical triple engines. Should fill a table easily, at least most of one.

You guys get a section together usually? Setup starts Friday morning I think, not sure when I'll be getting in, partly depends on the weather.

I am planning to be there.  Right now I am planning to drive and bring Joy engine, Ouzof rotary, Westbury paddle, and Benson.  However, if the weather prognosis turns bad I have a refundable air ticket to BWI, and will bring only what can easily be packed as carry on.  If I get enough parts made to be interesting I might bring some of the Colibri too.

I will be there, with my BROOKLYN tug model ready to run in the boat pond. It will be the first time I have finished a boat in time to take it.

I will also likely bring along a few other models. I plan to arrive Thursday evening- get to the expo and buy my entry badge so I dont have to stand in a long line Friday morning.

Looking forward to it, its my favorite event of the year.

Kvom - looking forward to seeing you there!
Ron, be great to see you again, I think that Brooklyn tug was the one you showed me this spring? Be fun to see it go! How big a pond do they set up?

I'm pretty new to this group, but I have not missed a CF in 17 years. So...I am looking forward to seeing some of this stuff in person(read: Lombard!)

I plan on being there (Saturday) again this year and some of us do setup together.

The weather is a big factor for me and the way this winter is starting off it doesn't look good.  We keep getting snow here and part of my new job is plowing the roads.  Last Saturday, we were supposed to get 1-3 inches; we got eight.  We started plowing at 11:30a Saturday morning and stopped at 2:00a Sunday morning.  Wednesday, I went to bed around 10:00p and "got the call" at 11:45p, started plowing at 12:30a and plowed to three in the afternoon.  Being in the the truck 14+ hours  tends to make one very tired.

So, I am hoping for good weather for a few days prior as well as that Saturday.  I really enjoy the people and the show.

-Bob

I am looking forward to the show again this year, should be arriving about 11:00 Friday morning depending on the weather and traffic and will set up with the MEM group. I was hoping to bring my newest finished engine, but it still needs quite a lot of tidying up before it runs. I will still bring it as a " work in progress" Safe travels everybody.  Earl

I am also looking forward to the 2018 show. I have a new Jan Ridders 2 stroke engine to show, as well as my usual display.
I will be there around 9:30 on Friday. It will be great to see old friends again, as well as making new ones!

I’m in. As usual, I’ll be there on Thursday to reserve MEM table space. Make sure you post here so I know how many spaces to hold.
I’ll have Elmer’s #50 along with the usual suspects.

Excellent! I was wondering about how to know where to set up Friday morning, do you put up signs, or stand there with a big MEM hat?! Looking forward to meeting you all in person!

Assuming I'm driving I'll need most of a table or two air outlets.  Should know for sure a few days ahead of time when there's a more reliable weather forecast.  Don't want to set up too close to Chris; his level of quality compared to mine would be embarrassing (to me).   :'(

I have a well-aged set of castings for the Stuart triple expansion.  Would I be better off consigning to the auction, using the consignment table, or just offering it here?  I will never build it.
Title: Re: Cabin Fever next month
Post by: RonGinger on January 02, 2018, 08:48:44 PM
There are two ways to sell at Cabin fever- the auction and the consignment area. In the auction you take your chance, but the item will very likely sell.

In the consignment area you can set a price, but the item may not sell. I have had good  luck every year with the consignment area. I have 4 or 5 items to sell this year, and was looking around the shop today for more. You do pay a commission, I think its 10%.

Id love to have a Stuart tripple, but it would probably stay in my casting storage for a long time, that is a tough engine to build, with a LOT of small parts.

I'm going to try and get there. Much depends on the weather (snow predicted that day) but I also have some work issues to deal with.
Big trial coming up and there's pressure to work weekends. (Which may trigger my retirement a few weeks earlier than planned  ;D )

Chris's chocolate mint cookies is the draw for me. Chris...you'd better save some for me.

I hope I make it. I need a boost in my motivation. The last 6 months have been full of frustration. Two new machines in my shop...and still, neither used.
No need to say I suck...it's a sign now just above my computer.  :facepalm2:

I will be bringing nothing. I should be enough.  ;D

While I'm here...I hope all is well with everyone and best wishes for a great year.

Don't forget, if you need a reserved MEM table space post it here and I'll have you covered.

Excellent - hope that forecast holds! I'll be there with a table-full.

I'm getting my gear sorted out, and lining up some help to get it in the car (cracked a rib the other day, all is well but heavy lifting causes this odd 'ouch' noise!). Same area that I broke years ago while skiing, think this is just the cartilage, but still hurts. Fortunately driving and archery are still do-able, will find out tonight if the target pistol is!

If it hurts to move: should help the target pistol  8). Go on down to one of the big box stores and get yourself one of those rolling platform thingees. They are about 2’x3’ , on wheels, and have a folding handle on one end; Rubbermaid I tinks . As far as the lifting: Holler; Yo Vern , Glenlivet 16 year old over here; help will arrive  :lolb:.. Y’all have fun now ya hear.

I've got a rolling platform cart like that already, its the lifting in/out of the car and on/off the table that hurts.

If I can't get enough bottled-help, I can always hold up a bag of mint chip cookies and watch all your shop elves come running!!

Hmmm, though it might have been MY elves jumping on my chest to wake me up and get them more cookies that got me into this mess...

Does anyone know what the air pressure is at the tables?  I just assembled my Elmer's Tiny display and all three of them run fine at 18 psi.  The only killer is that it takes over 30 psi to get the real small one started.

I picked up a replacement air-compressor regulator to put in line on the manifold on my engines, figure that should work out to reduce whatever the house pressure is (anything like house wine? ).

Starting to make the pile-o-stuff to pack into the car Thursday morning...
Title: Re: Cabin Fever next month

The air outlets all have stopcock valves which are decent at cutting down the pressure if you don't have your own regulator.

I am bringing a boat this year- a kit I bought at the show last year. So I will be really scattered. If we get the same tables as last year Id  like the last spot on the MEM table at the end of the NEMES line. that kind of puts me in both groups. I will be in there first thing Friday morning and marking out the tables for NEMES.

I hooked up the three engines that I haven't run since last year, and they all started.   :cartwheel:  Ready to pack the rental car tomorrow and head out early Thursday.  Being as the show is in PA, I don't expect to see a lot of Falcon fans pending the Saturday playoffs.  I might need to take off early on Saturday to catch the game on TV.

I'm going to bring along my little Ridders flame licker that ran once after completion in 2010 and has been sitting on a shelf since then.  If anyone has some extra fuel we might try to fire it up.

Not going to bring the Benson as it doesn't yet run reliably, and would be hard to pack.

I hate to break the news, but, sadly I won’t be there again this year: the new schedule just isn’t working for me. Perhaps if Stan is gracious enough to set up a FaceTime window, I can shout out to everybody. I will also, if a group dinner is arranged, buy a drink for all in attendance (Stan and I know how to handle it)

For those attending- safe travels and enjoy the show.  Hopefully, I can make it next year.

Great setup day, Stan got us a whole row front and center in the main room. Everyone was checking out the other models today before the masses show up tomorrow, and stocking up from the vendors.
One of the guys from the group running the excavators and bulldozers on the dirt pile in the back hall was over looking at the Lombard, asked if he could bring over his 18 wheeler and flatbed trailer for some pictures with it. Of course! Turns out the Lombard was a perfect fit on the trailer, almost same scale, so he drove it back across the expo center to the dirt pile, got lots of double takes from people in the halls, but it couldn't make it up the dirt ramp onto the pile, even with some rc bulldozer help! I have some great video and photos, will post when I get back home to the PC.
Weather here was 50s yesterday, 60s today, its going to be a lot colder over the weekend but not bad here. Should be over by Monday for the trip home.

Oh, and I picked up a casting set for lil locos flame licker, since Jo wasn't there to crowd me out of line! Plus some tools, etc...

Oh, and I picked up a casting set for lil locos flame licker, since Jo wasn't there to crowd me out of line! Plus some tools, etc...

If Jo were there...I don't think you'd care about the castings.

I wouldn't.  :naughty:

Back from Cabin Fever.

I'll say right off I have no pictures. (Well I took some...but they are cruddy. See my thread on looking for a camera.)

I'm glad I went. It was good to see some of the fellows from the forum. Unfortunately I missed getting together with a few others.
I was happy to meet Chris Rueby in person. He probably thought I was nuts. I don't think he knew who I was when I came up to him and demanded "I want my cookie".

I got my cookie. Mint Chocolate Chip. And yes...it was good. But no Chris...it didn't turn me into a shop elf.

I saw Chris's Shay. That, or another version of Kozo's locomotives, is on my bucket list. I was surprised how large it is.
Still on the bucket list though.

Overall it looked like a good show with good attendance. It did seem like I was seeing all the same stuff as last year (should be expected) but the forum group had several new displays.

Most importantly...it did boost my motivation some. Let's hope it sticks.

I bought a few things but didn't find a casting that might make Jo's eyes turn towards me.

The best part was the look on your face when I said we had eaten all the cookies already! Just joking, still have more! Was great to meet you in person.

Back home this evening, should have pics up Monday. I was planning on staying later today and coming home tomorrow, but just after lunch the attendees dried up, and the halls quickly emptied of exhibitors, so decided to leave a day early. Lots of snow here, had to plow out the driveway, time for a nap!

What? Did your shop elves say "not my job"?
Do they not realize if you don't get home...no cookies for them?

Glad you're home.

I hope all others had a good trip home.

Looking forward to the pics.

Well they certainly didn't learn that from you.
And I don't believe you left them with an insufficient amount of cookies. (If you did...then you are to blame.)

Perhaps time for a different cookie? Variety...spice...and all that?

Although I shouldn't talk...I'm currently in an argument with T as to why I can't have the same cookies I've always had.  :lolb:

Don't say anything...but it's part of my plan. She makes different cookies...I want the same...I get both.  :naughty:

Can't be the variety here, they had plenty of the christmas cookies too.

I think they just got used to not having me here pestering them to make parts for the model. Elf footprints on the recliner, their magazines in a pile on the side table.... Sheesh!

Okay, you guys wanted some photos to prove we were at Cabin Fever, here are a few. I did not cover the show in detail, these are just some snaps I took.

One of the guys running the hydraulic-powered excavators over at the other end of the show in the big dirtpile asked if he could get some photos of my Lombard Log Hauler on his flatbed truck. Well, SURE! Turns out it was a perfect fit, almost the same scale even.

And here is a video of it going through the different halls at the show, and TRYING to make it up the ramp onto the main dirt pile - did not make it, even with some bulldozers to help. The hauler, at 35 or 40 pounds, was too much weight. They burned up one differential trying to go up the ramp between halls, ran out a battery on another truck making it to the pile, so they had to finish up with a third truck - notice that the truck colors kept changing!

Hi Chris,
Great photos! There’s some lovely looking engines there, being a bit biased some cool locomotives! I’ve had the pleasure of driving a City of Turo for many hours.

The video of the Lombard on the move is great! The trucks just need belching smoke when the power goes on! Either that or a bunch of your elves working on the blown drive train...... dry cool

Cheers Kerrin

I also had a great time, ran my tugboat a few times, until the transmitter battery went dead.

I came home with TWO sets of castings, a Stuart Turner twin Victoria and a Cornwall Forge blowing engine. Really three sets because the twin Vic is really just two singles.

No new tools, I almost got a nice comparator, but I waited to think about it a bit more, and when I went back it was gone.

Weather was great for driving both ways, cold coming home, but it was warm in the car. And I got to make my first crossing of the new Tappan Zee bridge.

As always a great time for me, now have to waith 3 months for NAMES.

Another great Cabin Fever Expo!
Another casting set found it's way to my workbench-a Parcell and Weed vertical from LittleLoco's. Super castings and plans!
Great to see (and meet) quite a few MEMbers-especially crueby. He fits right in with the rest of us loonies.

I didn't take any pics, but enjoyed seeing all the exhibits.  The Joy and Coventry engines ran all weekend unattended so that I didn't spend much time at the table.  The Westbury paddle engine was running pretty well, but when it spat out a couple of screws from non-obvious places I let it sit motionless the rest of the show.

My Stuart triple casting set didn't sell at the consignment table.  It was right next to the set Ron Ginger apparently bought, so I guess he was intimidated.   >:D  :LittleDevil:

I did pick up a few goodies.  First, got some 2-56 screws and washers from AME booth and saved the shipping.  Then found a 12" steel rule with 1/100 graduations that I've been looking for for a few shows.  Got about 10 USA-made endmills for less than $5 each on average, and several sheets of acrylic needed to finish the Colibri.

I also picked up an air-operated gearhead motor from the consignment table that "may" work for powering the Colibri.

Those excavators are truly amazing bits of machinery, using real hydraulic pumps and cylinders, though messy when one springs a leak. Would be a whole lot of fun though!

That ramp was about the same grade as my driveway, so I think it could, as long as the wheels on the front didn't sink into the dirt. The trucks had the power but the wheels were too hard and smooth, and just spun.

Yes, I really want to have that engine, but I am not sure I am up to such a detailed engine. I have the Stuart twin compound under my bench. I started it once but decided it had to wait for more skill to build up. I'm not sure the rate of increase in skill and the decline of old age will intersect on the positive side.

I was there on Saturday afternoon, and talked to Stan for a little while. I haven't done anything with model engines lately, or even machining, for that matter. Mostly electronics projects and things around the house. I got a knee replacement in March, so I am presently caught up on my way to being bionic. I might get zerk fittings for my remaining joints! I also got a senior dog, Mr Tibbs, in June, and he also keeps me busy.

My pleasure, glad your truck is back up and running again! It was great fun going all the way across the expo center. My Lombard ran well that weekend, just threw the one link pin on the roller chain.

I was in the room with the construction equipment, just as you would enter through the archway.  I was hoping to get a spot in the adjoining room which had stationary models.  when I arrived Friday there was plenty of table space still available but my Otto Langen engine really needs to sit on its own table; had I put it on one of the tables that were setup for general use, when it “hit” it would have jarred the whole table, resulting in me being very unpopular. :facepalm2: :slap:

I did come home with one of Bob Herders “Myers” casting sets.  This makes a really nice model (I have a friend who built one).  I’ll probably start on it after the current build is complete.

These videos were posted by youtube use "reddrryder".  This is a 3 part series, you can see part 1 here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SFb6Myb9U88

You can see a brief view of my Otto Langen engine running at around 7:30 on this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kz51pCrLUvw

And a very quick view of the other Lauson models I’d taken for exhibit on at around 3:15 on this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bnyjJKxtfjA
