Title: Building GHT'S Small Rotary Table
Post by: Don1966 on May 08, 2014, 01:36:57 AM
This little project kit has been setting on the shelf for a while and since I am one to finish a project I felt the need to do so. I started last year making tools and this is the last of my kits of tools, so maybe I can get on with building engines next. Anyway this is my start at building GHT'S small rotary table and I am sure I will find some uses for it. This kit by the way is from Hemingway kits.
The first photo I set the base up in the four jaw chuck to face the recess and bring the back to dimension.
Then I flip it over and using the DTI to get it as true to center as possible.
Cutting the top and sides to dimensions.
After cutting to dimension I bored and reamed to .750" by the way I missed the top dimension by .009" and will have to compensate for that when I make the table.
Now it was time to use the mill to square the sides up and cut to dimension. I first had to find center using the coaxial indicator. Then it was a matter of cutting the two adjacent sides to dimension. This had to be done twice to get all four sides square and to dimension.
After squaring the final sides I drilled the four mounting holes .25".
Next was to cut the .5" slot to depth and drill  a hole. That completes the base.
In the process of making the pivot pin I failed to take photos, but in the process of making the pivot nut I had an opportunity to show using the use of the lathe back stop. A few photos of the back stop installed.

After facing off threading the pivot nut.
A trial fit of the pivot screw in the nut and a good fit.
I didn't have enough time to finish the pivot nut. That will be another day but a shot of what we have thus far.

Thanks for looking and I will continue when I get more time.

Nice work on the base and pivot there Don.  Thanks for sharing your build with us.
I'm looking forward to watching this come together.
You're going to have quite the set of tools here, and all hand made!  That's something to really be proud of!

Nice one Don, yet again no expenses spared you brought the castings  :naughty: me, being a cheap skate, made the base of mine out of two high quality pieces of rusty steel and silver soldered them together.

:headscratch: Why do you have a round pivot nut, mine is hexagonal, there is just about space for the spanner. Devil to get the tension just right  :-\.

Today was not a good day things just started going wrong from the start. The only thing good about today was my daughter's birthday and my grandson' ball game which I am just returning from.

Oh yes, by the was thanks Dave , Kim and Jo for looking and your support. Jo the drawing shows the nut round and a flat for a screw to tighten it up was set.

It started with the pivot nut which I had to throw away because the tap broke.
This is the pivot nut cutting the flat and drilling.
Next slitting the pivot nut for tapping which ended up %€#@&$.
So instead of making another right away I decided to start making the rotary table. Starting with a piece of round CI I chucked it into the four jaw chuck and cut it to its diameter.
Then I drilled and bored the .75" hole.
Test fit if the pivot pin and it's right on.
All is going well and cutting the under side recess in the table.
Cutting the side recess to depth and width and looking good. I have tuwo cutter profiles to make yet to finish the side recess which wii be V in shape when complete.
Now I decided to graduate the perimeter of the table and this is when it started going wrong. I started graduating and my phone kept ringing and I had to talk to three different people in between trying to graduate my table. The first go round things we not set up properly and I had to shave it off and start over. The second round with phone calls and all I missed one degree mark. Well in trying to save it I am attempting to make the marks longer to cover it up and will let you know when I return to it if I succeed.
The first photo is the setup for graduating.
This second photo was the second start at graduating.

That's it for today and thanks for looking.

Hey Don,
Those interruptions will get you every time!  That's when I make mistakes, when someone comes out to the shop and talks to me, or I get interrupted by something.  You lose count or get off by a 'turn of the crank' or whatever.

And to start the day with your pivot nut breaking.   :'(

But it happens. And you're taking it in stride.  You'll work it out, I'm confident.

Sorry today was such a downer.  Tomorrow will be better!

Kim and Simon guys thanks for the words of encouragement and looking in. Well I worked out of town today so the time I got in was enough to make my two profile tools. And I need to correct about the V, it's not a V but a dovetail slot that the tools will be use to create.
A photo of the tool bits.

And I am reposting this photo and surprised no one could see the miss count.

Guys thanks for looking and the support.

Hi Don

Looking good so far, as to the miscounted divisions, I've been there and done that... :hammerbash:
maybe just make the unit divisions the size of the "5"s, the "5"s the size of the "10"s and the "10"s
longer still?Might be less frustrating than turning them all off and starting over...

In any case, looking forward to more progress.

Cheers, Joe

Thanks Dave, Hugh and Joe for looking and your support.
Joe it seems that I failed at recovering round two so I went to round three. I was counting to five and staring at five each fifth mark. Well this caused some confusion and I missed mark a ten for a five, so as you know I was way off. From then on I counted to ten and started the count over after.
After round three of graduations I had the marks right.   :cartwheel: Next came to staking of the numbers and that went Ok except for these Chinese number stamps. Not all numbers are dead center of the shank, so the number drifts as you stake. I did have one mishap with the numbers but I can live with that.
In this first photo I started the 20 degree dovetail cutting the left side with one of the form cutters.
Next I cut the right side of the dovetail with the second form cutter.
After completing the dovetail it was time to start staking the numbers.
I then flipped the table over and cut it to size and bored the .09375" x 875" recess for the pivot pin.
A look at the table after staking.
All the pieces so far. The table is not complete it still needs holes drilled for the handle in it's perimeter and the T slots need to be cut.

That's all for today and thanks for looking.

I just dropped really luck with one of these, my wife spotted it in a junk shop and I bought it for £20.
It's really nicely made and has obviously been to an exhibition at some time in its life. It is all steel.

Thanks Kim, Chuck, Phil, Hugh, and my brother Eric for looking and your support.
Phil nice find bud.
I started today remaking the pivot nut and made a T slot cutter to cut the slots in the table. Believe it or not everything when smooth so far. I managed to get the T Slots cut in the table. I have to mill the inside opening for the stop nuts and drill the handle hole and tap to complete the table. After which I have the stop straps and nuts to make.
First photo I am cutting the T slot blank to size.
After setting up the Dividing head I started milling the T slot cutter teeth. Here I am cutting .050" off the top. The cutter is .5" in diameter.
The finished cutter after milling. I then harden it but didn't temper it. I passed a stone over the reliefs.
After setting up the four jaw chuck on the mill bed I center the table and started cutting .25" slots .3125" deep. I did the x axis first then used the cutter to finish them. Then did the Y axis .25" milling then finish with the T slot cutter.
The last photo shows the completed table milling and the parts we have so far.

Don, Impressive little Tee slot cutter you have made  8). I must get around to doing some graduating and punching the numbers on various things.

Are you going to polish the top? I was lucky and had access to a surface grinder when I made mine all those years ago, not that it made it immune to the odd milling cutter plunge over the years  :facepalm2:

You are getting me tempted to get Sexy's tilting table back out.. the castings have had a couple of months to season now so should be stable  ;D.

Thanks Dave my brother and Dave , Kim, Zee and Jo for looking and following along.
Jo no I don't plan on polishing the top.
Well I bragged to much yesterday to I got another dose of the dumb ass. I started drilling the handle holes and without looking at my drawings I thought the hole were .375 but they were suppose to be .3125". Well I have to live with that and really it's not to bad.
Ok first photo I am drilling the holes after locating position.
Next cutting the aperture to be able to insert the locking nut into the dovetail.
A photo of the table complete, you can see the aperture.
Next I silver soldered a piece of .25x 1" piece onto a 1" x.5 x 3" piece of steel. We will use this for chucking into the four jaw chuck.
centering to the drill point marks with the Tailstock center.
Cutting the outside profile.
Drilling the locking screw hole into the locking pads.
Slitting of the locking pads off the parent stock.
And a photo of what we have thus far.

Thanks for looking and we still have the handle and locking nuts to make.

I am just catching up with this one Don, sorry about that...had my own case of dumb ass to recover from as well. You are doing a fantastic job on this and it shows despite the hiccup with the graduations. Just an amazing piece of work overall and will make a fine addition to the tool box. Speaking of which, will you also make a "brown stuff" box to keep it in? Awesome project!!!

Thanks Dave, Zee, Bill and Hugh for the encouragement and following along. I decided to put brass inserts in the hole and reduce them down to the right size. I managed to make the locking nuts and stop block with the fiduciary line. Since I put inserts I can use the first handle I made.

Bill
Bill I do have a box for it and it's one I purchased from Michael's.

Ok I started by silver soldering another piece of .25x1" stock to the end of the bar. This will be the stop nuts. First I had to cut it into a curve profile slit it off the stock to width. Then drill a hole into the mounting bar to be secured onto a mandrel. Then cut the top surface to diameter which was 1 17/32" after which I silver soldered the arc I had slit off to the top of the bar.
This first photo I am slitting the arc off the parent stock.

The arc silver soldered to the bar.
Cutting the 20 degree dovetail onto the arc.

A photo of the table thus far. I still have more to do to complete it. I also have a riser block to mount it to the mill with to complete and Yes T nuts and Jo's favorite studs.

Great job gator bait.. I like the brass bushes, I think they were planned and not a stuff up. The tee slots worked out a treat also. Now, since you have built all the GHT thingees for Yo self, how bout a UPT for me (Hell, Dave wants one too) :lolb: I'll build my own box :Jester: :lolb: :naughty:

Hey dog, no it wasn't planned.  I wasn't paying attention to what I was doing. As for the UPT, you need to get you one you will have no regrets.

Ok back to finishing this table so I can get to making engines again. I started squaring off the riser plate and surfacing it. Then started making T Nuts. I decided to make two types and made the first ones to fit the slot and flush to the surface. The second nut I made the shank .375" and drilled and tapped .25 x28 TPI. Milled the flats to fit the .5"  x .25 slot. I got a few straps and .25" x 28 TPI all thread pieces.

This is the riser plated milling the sides square.

Finishing the surface off with a fly cutter.
I finished the riser plate by drilling the rotary table mounting holes to be tapped .25" x 28 TPI Then finished the T SLOT mounting holes to 17/64".
Then I started making the T Nuts and milling them to size.
I decided to slit the T Nuts off on the lathe.
I want some tubular T Nuts that way I could use a bigger stud and in this case .25" stud. I used .625" cold roll and cut it to a length of .6" down to .375". After which I moved it to the mill to cut the flats.
Milling a .065 flat on the .5" and .375" shank using a .1875" slot mill.
Returning it on the lathe to part off to .155" bottom flat.
Now were are ready to start using it. Here are the final photos.

This has really been a very satisfying project. I know I had some mishaps and some of which I have to live with, but it was a learning process and as long as I am happy with it, it will do.
Now it's time to start making engines.  :pinkelephant:

You know I'm picking on you. Darn nice piece. Now before you take off building an engine, there is still a Quorn grinder that can be built. As Dave says; "I'm just saying" :naughty:

Don looking good but I think you need to make yourself some more clamps.  In my experience of using mine I find the most useful to be the ones like Emco sell. Here are them in use:

To give you an idea of size: the fixing allen screws are M6. Some alternatives that I find useful:

Both are a good size when working on the 4" rotary table  ;)

Don,

Nice rotary table you have there!  As Jo says I've found getting some suitable clamps makes a big difference in how easy stuff is to set up on these small tables.

Don,
You have done a beautiful job on the rotary table.  You've got a mighty well equipped shop now I'd have to say!
Can't wait to see you put it all to use :)

Don,

Thanks for taking us through the build.  I've had the castings for ever.  I think I've been inspired....

Another well-built tool complete Don  :praise2:

You'll soon be running out of tools to build...  Errmmm, then again, maybe not; there's always something else needed...

Kind regards, Arnold

Very nice Don. Excellent thread for us wanting to learn more.

I'm confused about 'tubular T nuts'. I see them in the picture...but why and how?

No no my brother I am not going there. I have a tool grinder I bought from Northern tool work well.

Thanks Dave my brother and Dave Otto, Simon, Kim, Hugh for looking and your support.

Jo thanks for the photos and the tip, much appreciated.

Arnold I can think of a whole lot more to build but I m done for now. Thanks for looking and commenting.

Thanks Carl for your support and commenting. The tubular T NUT,S. Allow me to use a bigger stud or screws. It is tapped down to the base of the table. I milled the flats to fit the top and bottom slots of the table. The original T Nuts only allow me to use # 10 studs with the tubular ones I can use .25" studs. These can also be made as full studs with T heads to fit the slot.
