Title: Steinel SH4 mill
Post by: Ridjobradi on December 27, 2017, 03:36:23 AM
I was working in northern Virginia when I saw an add for some used equipment, including a Steinel SH4 mill in good working condition. There was no mention of the vertical head in the add, but it was there also.

I called and talked to the gentleman and he made an offer I could not refuse.  I dropped off my rental Camry and picked up a rental truck to drive up to Maryland and then 1,600 miles back to Galveston.

I left DC Friday morning with the rental truck and set off for Northern Maryland. The gentleman and I talked for a while about the work his shop did for a few decades and about the hit and miss engine he was rebuilding.  He offered to store the mill until I had more time to get it.  I didn't want to leave without the machine, so we started prepping it for the move. We used a tractor with a round hay bail spike and a strap to lift it in the truck.  I then used four 2 inch ratchet straps to tie it down in all directions. The drive back went well, even though it rained most of the trip.  When I got to Galveston, I had a boom truck lift the mill out of the truck.

The mill is in excellent shape, except the bearings in the vertical head, which I will rebuild soon.  The original motor has been replaced with a single phase 220V motor and SCR speed control.  The lubrication pump is missing and so is the auto feed disconnect bar.  I can handle both of those later.  It also came with an air over hydraulic positioning setuo that he had previously used.  It is a metric machine, but I will add a DRO to help with that.

I have attached a photo if the mill, in case anyone is interested.

If anyone has a information about the mill, it will be greatly appreciated. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171227/760b0ed86d9aec15dc021182542cbe41.jpg)

Thank you for the link.  I had not seen that one.  Most of the complaints seem to be about the limited capacity of the machine.  I don't see the limited size of the machine as being a problem for my hobby shop use.

The manuals are available here;

https://www.practicalmachinist.com/vb/general/steinel-sh4-sv4-manuals-english-ive-got-em-both-300175/

They are scans of manuals I own.  Not terribly informative ( like most machine manuals) but it's what the company published!

Hi Ridjobradi

Thats a german milling machine - the steinel machines are pretty good and quite rigid.
The only downside of the steinels is that they usually have not a lot of space between the table and the spindle nose of the vertical spindle.
But with the right tools you can deal with that. (direct morse-taper or steep taper collets for the spindle, flat vices, stub drills and so on...)

You can also find some information here:
http://passion-usinages.forumgratuit.org/t2937-steinel-sh4-sv4d

It's in german though but in case you need to know something important, I could help you translate (since beeing from switzerland makes it easier with german ;) )

Have Fun with it!

Florian

There's always google translate as well. Came in very handy for a German website build article on a single sleeve valve engine I came across a while back.

Hey Art

Google translate is a very powerful tool although if you neet to type off everything, its sometimes easier to just ask someone who can read a certain Section of a Manual and then tell yo the important things.

However, the german manuals are more for additional Information here, in case there is something missing in the english ones.

Florian - Thank you for the information. The mill is in good shape, except the vertical head, which I need to rebuild. It is also missing the mechanism that stops the auto travel. It's also missing the oil pump.

Florian,
Thankfully all I had to do was to copy & paste.
