Title: Early steam vehicle - who is going to build a model?
Post by: crueby on August 28, 2019, 09:48:24 PM
Okay, here is a fun looking one! A friend of mine sent me this video, asking if it would be the next project I do:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3p55J-VA5k
Quite an ingenious piece of work for the time, though I am not sure if it would scare the enemy away or make them laugh themselves to death when it got stuck in the mud. Found this writeup of the inventor:
https://www.britannica.com/biography/Nicolas-Joseph-Cugnot
So, which one of you will start the build? Too far down my list...

Think I have seen a model or two of this one already.

Didn't Cugnot build a half size model originally to demonstrate it before building the full size one ? Or have I got mixed up with something else.

There were some drawings and an article in ME in the 1980s

In watching the video, looks like the front wheel is driven by ratchets on either side rather than crank pins?

I agree Chris, and it seems to take a lot of fiddling around to get the thing to go!!  The battle would be over before that cannon arrived  :lolb:

Hi Chris, yes it does use ratchets. It would make a neat model but I'm not sure it would be too stable. The real thing in the video would be pretty iffy with iron wheels on cobblestones in the rain, and no great braking system.  Not too convenient to fire, either, with the furnace door at bottom front of boiler. It was a start, however, in the invention of self powered road vehicles.

There's an English 3 wheel car called the Reliant Robin. Much the same overall format as the Cugnot machine but it has a gas engine at the front and no whiskey barrel at the back. It's not too stable either - the TopGear show had fun with it turning at the bottom, going down a hill. Instant rollover- see link below. Anyway you could probably pick one up fairly cheap in the UK and build a Cugnot boiler on the front, convert the engine to steam, and remove the bodywork. Instant full scale Cugnot Reliant, with all the handling characteristics of the original Cugnot machine!

Oh yes - steam boiler on car that rolls!  Lets see, put the boiler on a gimbal mount....   :lolb:
