Title: Pottymill horizontal engine
Post by: tinglett on May 22, 2015, 03:37:24 AM
This is a horizontal mill engine designed by Stewart Hart who kindly sent updated plans to me late last year.  He designed it as a beginner engine.  And it suited a beginner like me very much!   I managed to goof and get the valve chest drilled upside-down, but it's growing on me as-is since I can see the piston valve operating when it runs :).  I also spent quite a bit of time making the flywheel from scratch, which was enjoyable and gave me a chance to try out my new rotary table for which I was a complete novice.  The build took me about 5 months working off and on nights and weekends.  That day job keeps getting in the way....

Thanks again to Stew!

The build log is here:  http://www.modelenginemaker.com/index.php?topic=4491.0   Over 1,000 pictures to enjoy :).

I should have cleaned it off after running it for those shots, but you get the idea.  Thanks to all who commented, answered questions, and cheered me on.  That helped a lot.

Excellent build Todd, I'm delighted that you enjoyed the build, and you should be very proud of the result.

Cheers

Nice engine, I followed and enjoyed your build.

I for one would not worry about the valve chest, where the inlet is located is not fixed, top, bottom, side or end is all possible there is no rule says it should be on the top other than perhaps for easy access.

Nice runner  and the position off the exhausts are a feature that enables the spectators to get a glimpse off what's going on inside  8)
