Hi, I am Eliza from Scotland. I am sorry it took me so long to introduce myself. I was recommended to this forum from a fellow member at the IET after asking about aluminium casting and I got so caught up browsing that I completely forgot about the introduction. You have some really interesting projects on here and a great community. I am probably going to go straight back to drooling over the casting projects now because they are so fun! Thanks for having me!

:hi: Eliza,
You didn't mention what you are planning on casting or your interest in model engines.

Another :hi: Eliza.
You will find a lot of interest in castings on this forum. Are you able to produce your own?

I want to draw my own wire from ingots I cast out of reclaimed metals:) I am interested in green engineering amongst other things, so learning how to use as much of the waste we create as humans as I possibly can in my projects is quite important to me. I am interested in creating prosthetics and am in the process of designing an arm for a friend of mine. I'm also a mechanical engineering student and working towards my IEng certification with the IET (lots of paperwork and sorting out of work experience and certificates) Right now I am meant to be designing a parachute (and method for its deployment) for a drone cargo which is kind of fun. Anyway, I would much rather work with parts I make myself, and if I can make them from recycled materials, I would be much happier. Bit of a rambling answer, but I guess I have a rambling brain. Everything interests me. I could watch a well made engine all day long. I think they are beautiful:)

Hi Eliza,
Welcome to the Forum
I am also interested in the history of technology and how things were made in the past. A couple of books you might find interesting:

This is a guide to mining and smelting in the 16th century. The illustrations are wonderful.

This is from the start of model engineering when almost everything was done by hand with perhaps a simple lathe and drilling machine.
Your challenge is to make a steam engine driving a generator from as many recycled/self cast parts as possible :) :) :stir: That would certainly go down well in your membership interview.

I am suddenly rather afraid! I will have to add this to the end of my VERY long 'to do' list. I am working on some things with my university that I'll have to share when we have got some pictures to show:) I'd love to do a lot of recycling and self cast parts in the future for as many of my future projects as I can. I think we should consider developing technology a lot more in that direction:)
